Summary

"Sign the papers, Odette. You have sixty seconds before I lock your father out of his life’s work." Six years ago, the Sterling empire executed a brutal corporate raid that destroyed Vance Designs, leaving Odette Vance to rebuild her family’s legacy from the ash. Now, a global financial crisis has pushed her back to the edge of ruin. She needs twelve million dollars by three o'clock, or the banks will liquidate everything. Her only option is Julian Sterling—the cold, transactional heir to the dynasty that broke her family. Julian doesn't offer a loan. He offers a contract. Facing a critical European merger that demands a stable corporate image, he needs a respectable, high-society wife for exactly twelve months. The terms are strictly business: 1. Twelve months of a flawless public engagement. 2. Complete shared residency at his Park Avenue apartment. 3. Zero real relationship. Zero physical intimacy. Odette has one minute to sign her freedom over to her greatest enemy, or watch her father’s life work vanish forever. But as the ink dries and the bedroom doors close, both realize that the most dangerous threat to a hostile takeover isn't the financial risk it's the cost of breaking their own rules.

Chapter 1: The Sixty-Second Ultimatum

Odette Vance pushed open the heavy doors of the Park Avenue building. She didn't look at the historic architecture or the marble lobby. She didn't have the time. Her family’s design firm was going into liquidation in less than an hour, and only one man had the money to stop it.

She took the elevator straight to the top floor, walked past the secretary without waiting to be announced, and opened the door to the main office.

Julian Sterling stood by the window, a glass of water in his hand. He didn't turn around immediately. He let the silence stretch for a full minute, a tactic he always used to make people uncomfortable.

"You're late, Odette," Julian said. His voice was flat.

"The trains were delayed," Odette replied, stepping toward his desk. She kept her chin up. "Let's skip the small talk. You know why I'm here."

Julian finally turned. His grey eyes were devoid of any emotion, showing no sign that they had known each other six years ago, before his family destroyed hers. He walked to his desk but didn't sit down.

"Your father’s firm owes twelve million dollars," Julian stated, leaning against the edge of the wood. "The bank closes the case at three o'clock. You have exactly forty minutes.

"I need an investment, not a lecture," Odette said, placing her portfolio on the desk. "Vance Designs still has active clients. We just need capital to restructure."

Julian didn't even look at the folder. "Vance Designs is dead. No bank will touch you. I am your only option, and we both know it."

Odette clenched her fists. "Then name your price, Julian. What do you want?"

Julian reached into his drawer and tossed a single sheet of paper across the desk. It wasn't a business loan agreement. It was a contract with two words printed at the top: Marriage Agreement.

"My board demands stability for the upcoming European merger," Julian said, his tone purely transactional. "They want a married CEO. You need twelve million dollars. I need a respectable wife who understands how the elite world works. We stay married for twelve months. We attend public events together. After a year, we divorce, and you keep the money."

Odette stared at the paper. "You are out of your mind."

"I am efficient," Julian corrected. "The terms are clear. No real relationship. No physical intimacy. You move into my apartment tomorrow."

"And if I walk out?"

Julian picked up his phone, tapped the screen, and held it up. The screen showed a live security feed of the Vance Designs office. Three men in dark suits were already waiting outside the glass doors.

"I have the bank’s lawyers on the phone right now," Julian murmured, looking directly into her eyes. "One word from me, and they lock your father out of his life's work. You have sixty seconds to sign, Odette. Do we have a deal?"

The digital clock on the office wall ticked loudly, cutting into the silence. Forty seconds left.

Odette looked at the live feed of her family’s office. Her father was inside, completely unaware that his entire life’s work was about to be taken away by men in suits. She closed her eyes for a split second, feeling the cold weight of reality press down on her chest.

When she opened them, her gaze locked onto Julian’s flat, grey eyes. "You calculated this entire thing, didn't you? You waited for the exact day the bank would move in."

"I don't leave my business goals to chance, Odette," Julian replied, his voice smooth and unbothered. "Twenty seconds."

She stepped forward, grabbed the pen from the desk, and pressed the tip against the paper. "Twelve months, Julian. Not a single day more. And the moment the clock strikes midnight on the final day, the Sterling money belongs to Vance Designs permanently."

"Agreed," he murmured

With a swift, sharp stroke of her hand, Odette signed her name at the bottom of the marriage contract. She tossed the pen back onto the desk. "Call them off."

Julian picked up his phone, pressed a single button, and spoke into the receiver. "Cancel the seizure on Vance Designs. Wire the twelve million to the bank immediately."

He hung up, his eyes scanning the signed document before turning back to her. A cold, professional expression remained on his face.

"Welcome to Sterling Enterprises, Odette. Pack your things. My driver will pick you up at seven tomorrow morning.

Odette didn't say another word. She grabbed her handbag, turned on her heel, and walked out of the office. Her legs felt heavy, but she refused to stumble.

As she passed the reception desk, Julian's secretary looked up, her expression completely unreadable. "Have a good afternoon, Ms. Vance," the woman said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Or should I say, the future Mrs. Sterling?"

The words felt like a sudden trap. Odette didn't answer. She kept walking straight toward the elevators, her chest tight. She knew her family's firm was safe for now, but she had just traded her personal freedom to the one man she swore to hate for the rest of her life.

Back inside the office, Julian Sterling watched the elevator light change from the top floor downward. He picked up the signed contract from his desk, his fingers tracing the fresh ink of Odette’s signature.

There was no victory smile on his face. He locked the document inside his top drawer, sat down in his leather chair, and picked up his pen. The deal was done. The European merger was secure. But as he looked out at the cold Manhattan skyline, Julian knew that keeping Odette Vance close was going to be the most unpredictable variable in his entire career.
