The Contagion Breach
1 YEAR EARLIER
Far beyond the populated towns of Alaska, surrounded by endless snow and a silence broken only by the howling wind, stood a highly secured biological research facility.
Its location was deliberately isolated.
Few people even knew it existed.
Inside, American scientists worked around the clock studying a highly dangerous biological agent—one considered a high-consequence threat because of its potential to cause widespread disease.
Every procedure was performed under strict containment.
The scientists wore fully enclosed protective suits as they moved through the laboratory. Heavy doors separated one section from another, while layers of security protected the most restricted areas.
Nothing was left to chance.
Until the alarms suddenly erupted.
WARNING. SECURITY BREACH.
The siren echoed through the facility.
An unknown group had entered the outer section.
Their appearance and language immediately set them apart from the facility's personnel. They were foreigners from Asia, communicating among themselves in a language unfamiliar to the American staff.
The scientists immediately followed emergency procedures, retreating toward the secured containment area.
Among the personnel was a man who normally attracted little attention.
He wasn't a scientist.
He was the facility's storekeeper and janitor.
But when the emergency began, he noticed something the others hadn't.
The intruders were moving toward the restricted laboratory.
He ran to the emergency control panel.
With his heart pounding, he pressed the safety button.
A massive reinforced security gate began descending.
The scientists were already behind it.
Safe.
The man remained on the other side.
The gate locked into place with a heavy metallic sound.
The intruders reached him moments later.
But just before they caught him, he swallowed the small key he had been carrying.
He didn't resist when they seized him.
The facility's sirens continued to scream.
Within minutes, a specialized response team arrived and secured the building.
A brief exchange of gunfire followed.
When the facility was finally brought under control, the scientists were unharmed.
Only one person had been captured.
The storekeeper.
Inside a secured room, the leader of the intruders stared at their prisoner.
“What do we do with him?”
Another man looked toward the prisoner.
“Kill him?”
“No.”
The leader's answer was immediate.
“He is as important as the biological samples we're looking for.”
The prisoner remained silent.
“He knows this facility,” the leader continued. “He knows the layout.”
But before they could question him further, the facility suddenly fell quiet.
The intruders were gone.
They had somehow disappeared before the response team could locate them.
They had planned their escape long before they entered the facility.
And somewhere beyond the frozen wilderness, a secret had already begun moving toward a future no one could have predicted.
