Southbound To Angel Island

Summary

Benjamin Bellheimer is fleeing into a violent storm, desperate to escape a world that has turned against him. When he awakens, the sea is strangely calm, as though an unseen force has intervened. As he sails southward, Benjamin reflects on the America of his childhood and the mysterious stories his family told him about Angel Island—a distant paradise where liberty is absolute and anyone can rise through ability and determination. But adulthood brings Benjamin into a very different America. From Migdol to Queens and Bristol, he witnesses the steady collapse of economic opportunity and social order. Eventually settling in Nam De Laffayet, he finds work as an instructor and believes his fortunes are changing. Then he is accused without evidence of bewitching his students. A political inquisition replaces the justice system he trusted, and Benjamin is imprisoned, where he witnesses corruption and abuse. Released on bail, he realizes escape is his only hope. He moves his money offshore, reaches Tortuga Island, buys a sailboat, and disappears into the sea. Mysterious children's voices draw him toward an island where he encounters a man who remarkably resembles his legendary ancestor. Benjamin is given a new opportunity, builds a successful business, and becomes extraordinarily wealthy. Finally, he seals his story in a bottle and casts it into the ocean. After being blessed by the island's Madonna, the bottle washes ashore in Charleston, South Carolina—where it is discovered, beginning the mysterious manuscript you are now reading.

Introduction

Introduction

In the beginning, there was a day when men existed for the supreme glory in adulthood and the superlative honor found in outstanding accomplishment. In those days, he stood strong, with his right foot on the secure firmament of righteous upbringing and his left foot anchored firmly in the realm of practical strategic forethought. In his right hand, he held the precious holy book that served as the divine guidance to his life in every phase. In his left hand, he held the tools of his trade and business. With these elements rooted solidly and the forthright freedom to possess them, he went out on the earth to win his fortunes, favor, and glory in the world of men...

His ancestors had labored diligently in blood, sweat, and endless deprivation against an overwhelming world-conquering enemy, but were dedicated to the conquest that was so forthcoming via their honorable appeal to the Holy Ghost in heaven above. The Father and his vast army of angels heard the collective appeal for assistance on mortal earth, and over time, could never forbear them from his glorious salvation.

In honor of that outstanding salvation, those ancestors secured the record in a stated rule of law that was inviolable, with the design to stand as law for an indefinite time. Upon completion of that sanctified designation, during the time of the great victory jubilee celebration, the supreme founder who had committed the laws to the permanent sacrament, gave one cardinal warning among many other of lesser degree... that with the holy laws now in solid place... the only fear being had by men, was the fear of defeat from within...

The great new Empire had now been established, with the purpose and intent of reigning for all eternity, and that brilliant empire stood for nearly two centuries. With passing that time, in the minds of men, the seven corrupting sins still prevailed. The sacred warnings were ignored, as they had been so during the reign of all great empires from the glorious past, on down into this very day, and the guaranteed forthcoming corruption gained a hold that destroyed with its an attempt at placing the necks of men underneath the booted heels of despotic tyrants, who knew not of the holy sacrament nor cared not for it.

What followed was a modern-day deterioration in a place where men never fathomed that such could ever happen, a most terrifying metamorphosis to behold. With this deterioration is the story of one man’s escape in response to this prevailing corruption and forced servitude, even though the massive persecuting entity had now focused its fallacious attention directly on him.

Biva: Quite good for a novella. Impressive writing style and we'll edited. Just one thing- Karla keeps referring herself to a stray cat and while at first it makes sense the analogy gets stale after a while.
