The argument after mission
The rain poured heavily over the hidden training grounds as the tension between the Yellow Flash and his prodigy reached a boiling point. The ANBU squad stood hidden in the shadows, their masks concealing the sheer shock of what they were witnessing.
"You risked the entire squad, Kakashi!" Minato’s voice, usually a calm anchor, vibrated with a dangerous edge.
Kakashi stood stiffly, his silver hair plastered to his forehead, his ANBU mask pushed to the side of his head. "The mission objective was secured, Sensei. The casualties were within acceptable parameters for war. If I hadn't pushed forward—"
"Acceptable parameters?!" Minato stepped closer, his blue eyes flashing with a rare, terrifying heat.
"Yes! A shinobi must prioritize the rules and the mission success above all else! You taught me that!" Kakashi snapped back, his voice rising in defiance, his teenage arrogance blinding him to the line he was crossing.
"I spoiled you so much that it's my fault you act like this because I never punished you!" Minato yelled, his voice echoing like thunder across the clearing.
Kakashi froze. His breath hitched in his throat. In all his years, through tragedy and war, Minato Namikaze had never raised his voice at him like this. The sheer volume of it made the young ANBU captain flinch, his defiant posture instantly crumbling into stunned silence.
Minato exhaled heavily, his face darkening with a stern resolve Kakashi had never seen directed at him. "Grab the belt."
Kakashi’s eyes widened to the size of saucers under his headband. The breath left him completely. His heart hammered against his ribs. A belt? A physical punishment? From his Hokage? From his sensei?
"S-Sensei... you can't be serious," Kakashi stammered, stepping back, his hands trembling slightly. "I'm an ANBU captain! I'm a jonin!"
"Over my knee," Minato commanded, his tone leaving absolutely no room for negotiation as he unbuckled the thick leather strap.
"But I!—" Kakashi started to protest, his pride frantically trying to erect a wall.
Before he could finish the sentence, Minato moved with his signature flashes of speed. He grabbed Kakashi by the vest, pulling him down across his lap. Kakashi tried to brace himself, but Minato brought the leather belt down hard against his trousers.
Smack!
The first strike landed with the force of an exploding paper bomb. Kakashi gasped, his fingers clawing into the grass. "Sensei! Stop!"
"You will learn to respect life, Kakashi," Minato said firmly.
Smack!
The second strike burned through his clothes. Kakashi’s legs twitched. "Ah! I did what was necessary!"
"You did what was reckless," Minato countered.
Smack!
The leather bit deeper. A sharp hiss escaped Kakashi’s teeth. "Ngh! The council... the council would agree with me!"
"I am the Hokage, Kakashi, not the council. And right now, I am your guardian."
Smack!
The heat radiated through his lower back. Kakashi’s shoulders shook. "Ow! Sensei, please, this is humiliating!"
"Your arrogance is what's dangerous."
Smack!
Spank 5: Minato put a fraction of his true shinobi strength behind this one. The impact made Kakashi’s entire body go rigid, a sharp cry tearing from his throat. “AGH!”
Up in the trees, the ANBU guards shifted uneasily.
"Is the Lord Hokage actually breaking the prodigy?" one whispered through his mask.
"I've never seen the captain look so small," the other replied, shuddering at the raw authority Minato was projecting.
Kakashi, who had endured torture training and battlefield wounds without a whimper, realized in horror that he couldn't take the sheer, unrelenting sting of Minato's discipline. The sheer weight of Minato’s real strength in a punishment context was overwhelming. He was only at the fifth strike, and his eyes were already burning with unshed tears.
Smack!
“Ow, ow! Sensei, I get it! I get it!” Kakashi cried out, trying to squirm away, but Minato’s heavy hand on his lower back kept him pinned effortlessly.
"You don't get it yet, Kakashi. You're still fighting me."
Smack!
“Ngh! Ahhh! Please!” The pain was blooming into a fierce fire.
"You left your flank entirely exposed just to prove a point."
Smack!
“It hurts! Sensei, stop, please!” Tears finally spilled over the boy's mask, dripping onto the muddy ground.
"It needs to hurt for you to remember."
Smack!
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry!” Kakashi sobbed, his pride entirely shattered.
"Apologies require understanding."
Smack!
“Aaaah! Sensei, please!” He thrashed weakly, his hands clenching into fists in the dirt.
"Hold still, Kakashi."
Smack!
“Ngh-huuuh… Sensei, I can’t…” His voice cracked, sounding like the fifteen-year-old boy he actually was, rather than the hardened soldier he pretended to be.
"You can, and you will."
Smack!
“Ow! It burns! Make it stop!”
"Think about your teammates who almost didn't come back today."
Smack!
“I-I didn’t want them to die! Ahhh!”
"Then stop acting like their lives are chess pieces!"
Smack!
“Gahhh!” Kakashi buried his face in his arms, weeping openly now.
Minato paused the belt, holding it mid-air. The silence of the forest was filled only with Kakashi’s ragged, heavy breathing and sobbing.
"Kakashi," Minato demanded, his voice dropping to a low, stern rumble. "Why am I spanking you?"
Kakashi bit his lip, turning his head away stubbornly, refusing to answer through his tears. He remained silent, burying his face deeper into his sleeve.
SMACK! Minato brought the belt down significantly harder, the sharp crack echoing off the trees.
“AGHHH! Okay! Okay! I’m sorry!” Kakashi shrieked, the intense burn forcing the answer out of him. “Because I was reckless! I put the team in danger! I didn’t listen to you! Please, Sensei, please stop, I beg you! I can't take anymore!”
Minato’s expression softened just a fraction, but he didn't put the belt away. "Count the last ten. If you miss a number, we start over from one."
The ANBU in the trees looked at each other in sheer disbelief.
"Starting over? Lord Minato is terrifying when he's angry..."
"He’s saving the kid’s life for the future. Kakashi needs to learn this before he kills himself on a mission."
Kakashi swallowed hard, his voice trembling violently as he prepared himself.
Smack!
“T-Twenty-eight!” Kakashi wailed, his legs kicking out involuntarily.
"Good. Keep counting."
Smack!
“Twenty… twenty-nine! Ahhh!”
"Focus, Kakashi."
Smack!
“Thirty! Ngh… Oww!, it hurts so bad…”
"Seven more."
Smack!
“Thirty-one! Ow, ow, ow!”
"Stay steady."
Smack!
“Thirty-two! Sensei, please, have mercy!”
"Almost there, son."
Smack!
“Thirty-three! Ahhhh!”
"Hold on."
Smack!
“Thirty-four! Ngh-huu… please…”
"Three more."
Smack!
“Thirty-five! Gah!”
"Keep the count."
Smack!
“Thirty-six! Ow! One more!”
"Last one."
SMACK!
“THIRTY-SEVEN!” Kakashi screamed out the final number, his strength completely spent as he collapsed limply across Minato’s lap, his body trembling from head to toe with fierce, lingering heat.
The belt was finally tossed aside, clattering into the grass. The harsh authority vanished from Minato’s aura, replaced instantly by the warm, protective presence Kakashi knew so well. Minato shifted, gathering the weeping fifteen-year-old up into his arms, pulling him tightly against his chest.
"Shh... it's over, son. I know it hurts," Minato whispered softly, rocking the boy gently as the rain began to clear overhead.
Kakashi buried his face entirely into Minato’s Hokage cloak, his hands clutching the fabric tightly as he let out all the tension, fear, and pain he had been holding in. He felt incredibly small, but for the first time in years, he felt entirely safe.
"I-I'm sorry, Sensei," Kakashi choked out, his voice muffled against the cloak. "I'm so sorry."
"I know, Kakashi. I know," Minato smiled softly, his hand moving up to rub Kakashi’s messy silver head, gently smoothing down the wild locks. "Let's get you some ramen, son."
Kakashi sniffled, a tiny, exhausted nod pressing into Minato's shoulder. "Mm."
Minato chuckled gently, lifting his student up to help him stand, the lesson deeply learned, and the bond between them stronger than ever.
