Chapter 1:The Illusion of Width
To understand the sheer impossibility of the feat is to understand the true anatomy of the ocean’s apex deepdiver: the adult male sperm whale. Externally, the giant appears as a massive biological vessel. Stretching between fifteen to eighteen metres in length and boasting a staggering body circumference of up to eleven metres, the outer diameter spans a seemingly generous three to three and a half metres.
To the uninitiated observer, this outer shell suggests ample room—a space equivalent to a small submarine hull. But this is a grand physical illusion. The interior of the beast is not a hollow chamber; it is packed with dense muscle, a monumental spine, massive vital organs, and a crushing sheath of blubber. When the whale’s forestomach is completely empty, it constricts down to a staggering diameter of just twenty-three to thirty centimetres—barely a single foot. Even when stretched to its maximum absolute capacity, gorged on a ton of giant squid, the stomach expands to a width of only two and a half feet.
While this resembles a narrow single mattress on paper, a human occupant would not be resting. The thick, muscular walls press inward with relentless force, executing the mechanical process of peristalsis.
Entering this chamber naturally means checking in as a dead body, crushed by pressure, suffocated by toxic methane, and instantly corroded by hydrochloric acid.
