Alex never believed in ghosts. That changes when he moves into an abandoned house with his loyal dog, Bruno. Strange footsteps echo through empty rooms, doors open by themselves, and a child's voice whispers Alex's name in the darkness. But Alex sees nothing. Bruno does. Every night, the dog stares at something invisible, growls at empty corners, and desperately tries to protect Alex from a presence that seems to be getting closer. Then Alex discovers the dark history of the house—a little girl disappeared there years ago. Now Bruno is the only one who can see her. But the deeper Alex searches for the truth, the more terrifying the question becomes: Is Bruno protecting Alex from the ghost… or from something much worse?

THE DOG WHO SAW THE DEAD

BRUNO KNOWS

The house had been empty for eleven years.

Nobody in the village wanted to talk about why.

It stood at the end of a narrow mountain road, surrounded by tall pine trees and a wall covered in moss. The windows were dusty. The garden had disappeared beneath weeds. Even during the day, the place looked abandoned.

Alex didn't believe in ghosts.

That was the first mistake.

He bought the house because it was cheap.

He moved in on a cold Friday evening with only a few boxes and his dog, Bruno.

Bruno was a large black-and-brown dog with a white mark on his chest. He had been Alex's companion for almost six years.

When Alex opened the front door, Bruno entered first.

He stopped immediately.

His ears lifted.

He stared toward the staircase.

"What's wrong?" Alex asked.

Bruno didn't move.

He began growling.

Alex laughed.

"Come on. There's nothing there."

Bruno slowly backed away from the stairs.

Then he looked at Alex.

Not at the staircase.

At Alex.

As if he wanted him to leave.

---

10:43 PM

Alex finished unpacking and made himself dinner.

Bruno refused to eat.

He sat beside the kitchen door, staring at the hallway.

Alex placed the food in front of him.

"Come on, Bruno."

The dog didn't even look at it.

Suddenly—

Tap.

Alex looked up.

Another sound.

Tap... tap...

Something was touching the upstairs window.

Alex walked toward the stairs.

Bruno immediately stood and blocked his path.

"Move."

Bruno growled.

"Bruno."

The dog wouldn't move.

Alex sighed.

"Fine. I'll check it myself."

He climbed the stairs.

The hallway was completely dark.

At the end was a bedroom.

The door was slightly open.

Alex switched on his flashlight.

Nothing.

He checked the window.

Locked.

No tree branches were near it.

He turned around.

Bruno was standing at the bottom of the stairs.

But the dog wasn't looking at Alex.

He was looking behind him.

Alex slowly turned.

Nothing.

He smiled nervously.

"You're scared of an empty hallway?"

Bruno continued staring.

Then he began barking.

Not at Alex.

At the empty space directly behind him.

---

12:17 AM

Alex woke up to the sound of footsteps.

Step.

Silence.

Step.

Silence.

Step.

Someone was walking upstairs.

Alex sat up.

"Bruno?"

The dog was sleeping beside the bed.

Alex checked his phone.

12:17 AM.

The footsteps stopped.

Then came a whisper.

"Alex..."

His eyes opened wide.

He looked toward the bedroom door.

Bruno suddenly woke up.

The dog stared at the doorway.

His fur stood up.

"Bruno?"

The dog began growling.

Alex couldn't see anything.

But Bruno could.

Something was standing in the doorway.

Something that wasn't visible to Alex.

The bedroom door slowly moved.

Creeeeak.

Bruno jumped onto the bed.

Alex grabbed him.

"It's okay."

The door stopped moving.

Silence.

Then Bruno began staring at the corner of the room.

Alex followed his eyes.

Nothing.

Bruno's eyes moved slowly upward.

Then toward the ceiling.

Alex whispered,

"What are you seeing?"

Bruno suddenly barked.

The bedroom light switched on by itself.

Alex froze.

On the wall was a wet handprint.

A child's handprint.

Alex hadn't touched that wall.

Bruno stared directly at it.

Then he began whining.

---

The Next Morning

Alex called the previous owner.

An old man named Mr. Daren answered.

"I need to ask you something about the house."

There was a long silence.

"What happened there?"

The old man's voice became quiet.

"You moved in?"

"Yes."

"You shouldn't have."

Alex frowned.

"Why?"

"Did you bring your dog?"

Alex looked at Bruno.

"Yes."

Another silence.

Then Mr. Daren said,

"Watch your dog."

"What does that mean?"

"The dog will see what you cannot."

The call ended.

Alex tried calling again.

The number was unavailable.

Alex stared at Bruno.

"See what?"

Bruno looked toward the hallway.

Then slowly walked away.

---

2:06 PM

Alex spent the afternoon cleaning.

He found an old photograph inside a cupboard.

It showed a family standing outside the house.

A father.

A mother.

A little girl.

And a dog.

Alex turned the photograph over.

Written on the back were four words:

THE NIGHT SHE DISAPPEARED.

Alex felt a chill.

Suddenly Bruno barked from upstairs.

Alex ran up.

Bruno was standing outside the locked bedroom.

The same bedroom from the previous night.

The door was closed.

Bruno scratched at it.

"What's inside?"

Alex opened the door.

Empty.

Except for an old wooden chair.

Bruno stared at the chair.

Alex looked at it.

Nothing unusual.

Then the chair moved.

Just slightly.

Alex froze.

Bruno began growling.

The chair moved again.

Scrape.

Alex stepped backward.

"Okay..."

He grabbed Bruno.

"We're leaving."

But before they reached the door—

a child's voice whispered:

"Don't."

Alex stopped.

Bruno barked violently.

Alex turned.

There was nobody there.

Then the door slammed shut.

---

3:30 PM

Alex forced the door open.

He ran downstairs with Bruno.

He grabbed his keys.

But when he opened the front door—

he stopped.

The outside was different.

The road was gone.

The trees were gone.

Instead, there was a dark hallway.

Alex slammed the door shut.

He opened it again.

The normal garden was there.

He stepped outside.

Bruno followed.

Alex looked back at the house.

Every window was black.

Except one.

The upstairs bedroom.

A small figure was standing behind the glass.

Alex stared.

"Who's that?"

Bruno began barking.

The figure lifted one hand.

Alex blinked.

It disappeared.

He immediately took Bruno and drove to the village.

---

6:12 PM

The village shopkeeper recognized the house.

"You live there?"

Alex nodded.

The man's face changed.

"You need to leave."

"Why?"

The shopkeeper looked at Bruno.

"Because of the girl."

"What girl?"

The man lowered his voice.

"Her name was Emily."

Alex remembered the photograph.

"What happened to her?"

"She disappeared one night."

"Was she found?"

"No."

Alex swallowed.

"What about her parents?"

"They left."

"And the dog?"

The shopkeeper stared at Bruno.

"The dog died first."

Alex frowned.

"Why are you telling me this?"

The shopkeeper whispered,

"Because after Emily disappeared, people began seeing her inside the house."

Alex looked at Bruno.

The dog was staring at the empty corner of the shop.

Growling.

The shopkeeper noticed.

"You see?"

"See what?"

The man stepped backward.

"Your dog sees her."

---

11:59 PM

Alex returned home.

He didn't want to.

But his belongings were there.

And he convinced himself that fear was making everything worse.

At midnight, he locked every door.

Bruno stayed beside him.

12:00.

Nothing.

12:01.

A child's laughter came from upstairs.

Bruno stood.

His ears pointed toward the ceiling.

Alex whispered,

"Don't."

The laughter continued.

Then footsteps.

Running.

THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.

Something ran across the upstairs hallway.

Bruno suddenly ran toward the stairs.

"Bruno!"

Alex followed.

At the top, Bruno stopped.

He stared at the bedroom.

The door was open.

Inside stood a little girl.

Alex saw nothing.

But Bruno did.

The dog slowly approached the doorway.

His tail dropped.

The girl whispered something.

Bruno began whining.

Alex crouched beside him.

"What is it?"

Bruno looked at Alex.

Then back at the empty room.

Suddenly, the temperature dropped.

Alex could see his breath.

A tiny handprint appeared on the bedroom mirror.

Then another.

Then another.

They slowly formed the shape of a child's hand reaching toward Bruno.

Alex backed away.

"Bruno..."

The dog didn't move.

Then he barked once.

The mirror cracked.

---

2:22 AM

Alex woke on the floor.

He didn't remember falling asleep.

Bruno was gone.

"Bruno?"

Nothing.

Alex searched the house.

"Bruno!"

He heard scratching.

From inside the wall.

Alex froze.

The scratching moved.

From one wall...

to another.

Then stopped behind him.

He turned.

Bruno was standing in the hallway.

But something was wrong.

The dog was staring at the ceiling.

Alex followed his gaze.

Nothing.

Then Bruno began barking at the exact spot above Alex.

Alex suddenly felt something cold touch his shoulder.

He spun around.

Nobody.

Bruno growled.

Then Alex heard a whisper beside his ear.

"He's not your dog."

Alex stepped back.

"What?"

Bruno suddenly attacked the empty space beside Alex.

The room filled with a terrible cold wind.

The lights flickered.

A dark shape appeared for half a second behind Bruno.

A little girl.

Alex finally saw her.

She was standing directly behind his dog.

She whispered:

"Run."

The lights went out.

---

3:00 AM

Alex grabbed Bruno and ran downstairs.

The front door wouldn't open.

He pulled.

Nothing.

He kicked it.

Nothing.

Behind him—

Footsteps.

Slow.

Small.

Bare feet walking across the wooden floor.

Step.

Step.

Step.

Alex looked at Bruno.

The dog was staring behind him.

Tears seemed to gather in Bruno's eyes.

Alex whispered,

"She's here, isn't she?"

Bruno lowered his head.

Then he barked toward the darkness.

A little girl's voice answered.

"Alex..."

Alex closed his eyes.

"What do you want?"

Silence.

Then:

"Look at your dog."

Alex looked down.

Bruno was staring at him.

But behind Bruno stood the girl.

This time Alex could see her clearly.

She was pale.

Her clothes were old.

Her face was sad rather than frightening.

She pointed toward Bruno.

Alex whispered,

"What?"

The girl said:

"He's been protecting you."

Alex looked at Bruno.

Then the girl disappeared.

The front door unlocked.

Alex didn't hesitate.

He ran outside with Bruno.

---

The Truth

The next morning, Alex returned to the village.

He found the old shopkeeper.

"Tell me everything."

The man sighed.

"Emily wasn't the one haunting the house."

Alex stared at him.

"Then who was?"

"The thing that took her."

Alex felt cold.

"What thing?"

The shopkeeper shook his head.

"Nobody knows."

"Then why can my dog see it?"

The old man looked at Bruno.

"Because dogs don't see the dead the way we do."

Alex frowned.

"What do they see?"

The man whispered:

"Sometimes they see what is standing beside us."

---

Three Days Later

Alex left the house.

He moved into a small apartment in the city.

Bruno seemed calmer.

For the first time in days, he slept peacefully.

Alex thought it was over.

Until one night, Bruno suddenly woke up.

He stared at the bedroom door.

His ears rose.

Alex opened his eyes.

"What?"

Bruno began growling.

Alex turned toward the door.

Nothing.

Then Bruno walked slowly toward it.

Alex sat up.

"Bruno?"

The dog stopped.

He looked back at Alex.

Then he looked at the empty doorway.

A small child's voice whispered:

"Alex..."

Alex's blood ran cold.

Bruno barked.

The bedroom light flickered.

Alex grabbed his phone.

The screen showed a new photograph.

He hadn't taken it.

It showed Alex sleeping.

Bruno beside him.

And standing behind the bed...

was Emily.

Alex slowly looked up.

Nothing.

He looked back at the phone.

The photograph had changed.

Now Emily was standing closer.

Closer to Bruno.

Bruno suddenly began barking at the empty space beside Alex.

Alex couldn't see anything.

But Bruno could.

The dog stepped between Alex and the darkness.

Protecting him.

Then the phone screen went black.

A final message appeared:

SHE FOUND YOU.

Alex looked at Bruno.

The dog stared at something behind him.

And for the first time...

Bruno wasn't growling.

He was terrified.

The room became completely silent.

Then something whispered directly beside Alex's ear:

"Good dog."

Bruno barked.

The lights went out.
