Chapter 1
The morning sun over downtown Waterbury hadn’t even burned off the fog when the heavy glass doors of the luxury jewelers swung open with violent force.
Lust stepped inside, her crimson coat sweeping across the polished marble floor like a spill of fresh blood, her dark hair immaculate, and a customized semi-automatic handgun raised with steady, chilling precision.
The clerk behind the glass counter froze, hands trembling over the velvet display cases.
“Put the jewelry and money in the bag NOW!” she yelled, her voice commanding the entire room, vibrating with that subtle, terrifying hum of crimson energy.
“Take whatever you want! Just don’t shoot!” the clerk stammered, pulling a heavy duffel bag from under the counter and furiously dumping trays of diamond necklaces, gold watches, and stacks of banded cash straight into it.
Lust didn’t just watch; she stepped closer, leaning over the counter with that cold, mocking smirk playing on her red lips. Her dark eyes caught the brilliance of the diamonds, but her gaze lingered on the raw panic reflecting at her. The money was secondary; the terror was what fed her.
“Faster,” she purred, tapping the barrel of the gun against the tempered glass until spiderweb fractures spread across the pane. “Before the local law thinks they can play hero.”
The sirens were already wailing in the distance, echoing off the valley hills and screaming down West Main Street. But Lust didn’t flinch. She grabbed the stuffed bag with one gloved hand, her crimson aura flaring hot around her silhouette as the first squad cars screeched onto the curb outside.
Before the first officer could even kick open his door, Lust stepped through the shattered glass front of the shop.
She didn’t run. She didn’t duck.
With a languid flick of her free hand, a concentrated bolt of crimson lightning arced from her fingertips and struck the lead cruiser’s roof bar. With a screeching pop of fused circuits and bursting plastic, the siren died instantly, trailing a plume of black smoke.
“Step away from the vehicle! Hands where we can see—”
Lust cut the sergeant off with a backhanded sweep of her arm. A concussive wave of red kinetic force erupted across the pavement. It blasted into the cruisers, blowing out the windshields and hurling the officers backward against the hoods, knocking the wind straight out of them and sending their service weapons clattering across the asphalt.
She hauled the heavy duffel of diamonds and cash onto her shoulder, stepping over the smoking debris with slow, hypnotic arrogance. Her dark hair didn’t have a single strand out of place, and her tailored crimson coat fluttered in the morning draft like a banner.
“Pleasure doing business with you,” Lust said, letting loose an evil chuckle that echoed off the brick buildings.
She turned her back on the wreckage and began her casual strut right down the center of West Main Street, the red aura pooling under each step like spilled oil.
An unmarked sedan whipped around the corner of Grand Street, tires screeching against the asphalt before sliding to a halt across the crosswalk, cutting directly into Lust’s path.
The passenger door swung open with a heavy thud, and Detective Johnathan Noire stepped out onto the pavement. He adjusted his trench coat, keeping his hand resting firmly near his hip, his eyes locked onto the towering crimson spectacle strolling down the road.
“Hey, you red-looking, flaming hot woman—put the bag down and hands where I can see them!” Noire called out, his gravelly voice cutting through the smoke still rising off the wrecked cruisers.
Lust stopped dead in her tracks.
She let out a heavy, theatrical sigh, rolling her dark eyes as if she had just been interrupted by a minor inconvenience. She lowered the duffel bag slightly, letting it rest against her hip while the red haze danced lazily along the lapels of her coat.
“You’re out of your depth, P.I.,” Lust said, her tone dripping with venomous condescension. “You think a badge, a cheap suit, and a rusty sedan give you the leverage to tell me what to do? You’re playing at being a lawman while standing in front of a natural disaster.”
Noire didn’t flinch, narrowing his gaze through the haze. “Lady, I’ve dealt with every lowlife, grifter, and lunatic crawling out of the Naugatuck Valley. You’ve got stolen diamonds, two wrecked patrol units, and you’re glowing like an active power plant. Put the bag down before this gets messy.”
Lust tilted her chin, that cold, razor-sharp smirk curling across her crimson lips. “Messy? Oh, detective... You have no idea how right you are.”
Before Noire could even unsnap his holster, Lust gave a casual flick of her wrist.
A concentrated shockwave of crimson kinetic energy erupted from her fingers, striking him square in the chest. The blast lifted Johnathan Noire clean off his feet, launching him backward through the air until he slammed hard into the hood of his unmarked sedan, caving the metal with a heavy, jarring crunch. The car’s alarm started shrieking as he slid down onto the pavement, clutching his chest and wheezing to get his wind back.
Lust didn’t even break her stride.
She hitched the heavy duffel of cash and jewels higher onto her shoulder and kept walking right down the centerline of West Main Street, her heels clicking against the asphalt in steady, rhythmic arrogance. The red aura swirled around the hem of her dark crimson coat like living embers, leaving faint singe marks on the crosswalk stripes behind her.
I stepped out into the open street, having walked up from the direction of the IC.
The morning air was thick with the acrid stench of scorched asphalt, blown circuits, and shattered automotive glass. Behind me, the wrecked cruisers still drifted thin plumes of black smoke into the gray sky, and Johnathan Noire was barely pushing himself up against the dented hood of his sedan.
Lust stopped mid-stride. She slowly turned around on her heels, the heavy duffel bag resting easily against her hip as her dark crimson coat swirled around her boots. A slow, dangerous smile curved her red lips, her dark eyes locking directly onto mine with wicked recognition.
“Leave them out of it?” she whispered, taking a slow step toward me, her heels clicking against the pavement. “Oh, Terrex... collateral damage is the sweetest part of the prologue. They suffer because you brought me into existence and then abandoned me. If you want to protect your precious valley, you’re going to have to make me stop.”
Lust dropped her shoulders, letting the heavy duffel bag thud against the cracked asphalt. She didn’t charge, and she didn’t fire off another kinetic shockwave. Instead, that cold, vintage-cut smile on her lips curved into something far more calculating, dropping lower into the venom that defines her archetype.
“You speak of innocent lives, Terrex, as if the strangers in this town are what keep you tethered,” Lust said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that carried effortlessly through the street. “You want to plead for Waterbury? You want to play the noble guardian standing between the crowd and me?”
She took two slow, predatory steps forward, her dark eyes narrowing with malicious delight.
“Let’s see how noble you stay when the crosshairs shift closer to home. You think I didn’t see the woman waiting by your side? You think your precious Mersaydees is safe just because she walks with a cane in the quiet shadows while you play hero in the daylight?” Lust raised one gloved hand, the crimson energy swirling into a thin, vibrating needle of light pointed dead at my chest. “When I burn this rivalry down to the ash, Terrex... she’s the first one who pays for your twenty-two years of silence.”
The words hung in the cold morning air, heavier and more dangerous than any wrecked cruiser burning behind her.
My hands clenched into fists, the line between author and protector completely shattered on the pavement of West Main.

EXCITING! And there was even a special appearance of one of your other characters in this story. And rivalry? Like between Lust and Mersaydees? I'm so looking forward to the next chapter! What's going to happpeennnn? (OuO)
