Chapter 1

Esther had not found the time in her schedule to meet the new hire just quite yet, the lord of the farm had hired the girl quite some time back. From what Esther had heard the girl had a room in the main house on the farm in the attic, the farmhands had said she looked about twenty years old, but she was clumsy with her job and Sir Owen had to lecture her daily, no one believed she would make it to the end of the month.

Today Esther had bumped into a girl who had apologized frantically before scrambling to pick up the bundle of laundry she had dropped. Esther guessed she was the new maid.

"That's gonna be a bummer to clean."

"huh? Oh yeah I guess so..."

"Well I better leave you to it then."

The girl didn't respond, instead she had scrambled to the laundry room, a couple moments later she head Miss Owens, Sir Owens wife, yelling something she couldn't quite make out. She had wanted to ask for her check early but she changed her mind, the lady of the farm would be in a sour mood which usually meant everyone was in a sour mood. Esther's head turned when she heard the screech of tires through the dirt, signaling the weeks hay delivery had arrived. Thomas, one of the other farm hands was absent till Monday, his ma back in the city was supposedly sick.

The only other farm hand on the farm made his way to the truck, he was Sir Owens eldest son, now 17 years old but he somehow had a say in the care of the animals and of course how much money they were allowed to spend on medical procedures for them, which was a real shame because one of the old horses had gotten a limp which wouldn't go away, Thunder was her name. She was the farms pride and joy back in the 80's. Now she was just a burden on the farms budget, Esther knew it would be her time any day now.

"Liam." Esther greeted

"Morgan, stop trying to make small talk and get to work."

"Yeah, yeah kid."

"For the last time, stop acting like I'm a toddler if you want to keep your job."

Esther was about to snap back, then he turned just in time to see the new maid walking to the drying rack. He let out a low appreciating whistle ,"Watch out dear i might have to show you just how red you can get!" He yelled at her when she started walking faster with a flush creeping up her neck.

"Careful now, your father might hear you."

"What's that old man going to do?"

"It's still his farm, Liam."

"Not for long it's not."

Esther could almost feel the smirk forming on her face when Sir Owens cleared his throat from behind her, he had a habit of always being there when his boy was talking shit.

"And why wouldn't it be mine for long?"

"Uhm...Uh...Nothing Dad!"

Sir Owens walked to the back of the truck opening the latch.

"Get in kiddo's, better to start packing it out early, wouldn't want to be stuck doing it till an ungodly hour again."

"Liam get in and just hand it to me."

"No! You get in."

Esther swallowed her pride as well as the words she was about to spit out and simply got in the back, handing it to him.

"Don't drop it, just put it on the ground, I'll put it away for storage later."

"Fine"

"Lose the attitude, you just look like a prick."

When they had finally finished Esther had retired to her room and she had sat in silence, reading a farm manual, the silence didn't help her yearning, she had been clean for 3 months now. But her mind refused to forget that small little baggie of pills she had hid in her drawer, under the main bottom which she had taken out and put over it. She had gotten the idea from a show she'd watched as a child. The urge to take just one was still there, but not as strong as it had been in that first week without the drugs. Sir Owens had discovered them and told her if he ever saw a single pill near her or saw her high he would throw them out and call the cops.

It had been sobering to her back then. She had realized just how fucked she would be if he went through with it

Ashley: I enjoyed the story. It was a short one so the fast pace fit. I think something should be put in to show a time jump between paragraphs like a "****" just to make it easier to follow when we skip to the next day week or month. Over all a good read.
