The Devil Has a Weakness

NEW YORK CITY, 7:15 A.M.

New York never truly slept.

Even before the sun had completely risen above the skyscrapers, the streets were already crowded with impatient drivers, people rushing toward subway stations, and exhausted workers clutching cups of coffee as if their entire existence depended on caffeine. The city was loud, merciless, and always hungry for something more.

Money. Power. Success.

Or, in some neighborhoods, blood.

Behind the enormous glass windows of the penthouse occupying the top floors of one of Manhattan's most expensive buildings, Jeon Jungkook stood motionless, staring at the city beneath him. His black dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, and a glass of untouched whiskey rested on the table behind him despite the early hour.

His expression was unreadable.

It usually was.

At thirty years old, Jungkook had become a man whose name could silence an entire room. He possessed businesses scattered throughout New York, properties worth more than most people could imagine, and an organization whose influence extended far beyond what the public could see. To the outside world, he was a powerful businessman, a private investor with an impeccable reputation and connections that reached the highest levels of society.

To the people who knew the truth, however, he was something else entirely.

He was the man who ruled the underground.

The man whose orders were never questioned twice.

The man whose enemies learned, often too late, that making a deal with Jeon Jungkook was safer than making an enemy of him.

He had not inherited his position simply because of his surname. He had earned it through years of calculated decisions, relentless ambition, and a willingness to do what other men could not. He understood that mercy could be mistaken for weakness, that trust could become a weapon in the wrong hands, and that love was perhaps the most dangerous vulnerability a man could possess.

Consequently, he avoided all three whenever possible.

At least, that was what he told himself.

A knock interrupted his thoughts.

"Come in."

The door opened, revealing a tall man dressed in an expensive charcoal suit. Kim Taehyung entered with a tablet in one hand and the expression of someone who had already regretted coming to work.

"Good morning to you too, sunshine."

Jungkook did not turn around.

"You're three minutes late."

Taehyung glanced at his watch.

"Good morning to you too, Satan."

"Four minutes."

"How is that even possible? I was three minutes late when I entered."

"Now you're wasting my time."

Taehyung sighed dramatically and dropped onto the leather sofa.

At thirty-two, Taehyung was one of the very few people in the world who could speak to Jungkook without immediately regretting his life choices. He was intelligent, observant, and dangerously good at reading people. He also possessed an almost supernatural ability to irritate Jungkook without getting himself killed.

Almost.

"Jennie says you forgot breakfast again," Taehyung announced.

"Tell your wife to mind her business."

"She said you'd say that."

"Then why are you repeating it?"

"Because she also said to remind you that she knows where you sleep."

Jungkook finally turned his head.

Taehyung smiled innocently.

"Your wife is threatening me through you?"

"Apparently."

"Interesting."

"Very."

For a moment, neither spoke. Then Taehyung's gaze wandered toward the untouched whiskey.

"It's seven in the morning."

"And?"

"Nothing. Just checking whether you've finally lost your mind."

Jungkook looked at him with an expression so cold that most people would have immediately apologized.

Taehyung simply grinned.

"Anyway, the others are downstairs. We have a meeting at eight, and Jimin is already complaining about your schedule."

"Jimin complains about everything."

"He says you're making everyone miserable."

"Then he can resign."

"He says that would be difficult because his wife likes the salary."

"Then he should stop complaining."

Taehyung laughed under his breath, shaking his head.

Sometimes he genuinely wondered how Jungkook had managed to keep six people close to him for so many years. The man was impossible, arrogant, emotionally constipated, and capable of making a simple conversation feel like a disciplinary hearing.

Yet, beneath all that darkness, there was someone Taehyung had known since long before the world began to fear the name Jeon Jungkook.

Someone who laughed occasionally.

Someone who cared more than he admitted.

Someone who had spent seven years looking at the same woman as if she had personally invented the sun.

Unfortunately, Jungkook was also a complete idiot when it came to her.

And Taehyung intended to remind him of that fact whenever possible.

"By the way," Taehyung said casually, "Y/N texted me last night."

Jungkook's fingers stopped moving against the edge of the table.

It was such a small reaction that most people would have missed it.

Taehyung did not.

"Oh?" Jungkook asked, his voice perfectly indifferent.

"Yeah."

"What did she want?"

"To ask whether Jennie and I were free this weekend."

"And?"

"And I told her we were."

Jungkook turned back toward the window.

"Good for you."

Taehyung stared at him.

Then he slowly began to smile.

"Oh, this is going to be a wonderful day."

"Get out."

"Have you spoken to her this morning?"

"Get out, Taehyung."

"Because she told me she was going to stop by the office today."

Jungkook said nothing.

Taehyung stood, adjusted his suit jacket, and walked toward the door.

"Try not to frighten the poor girl when she arrives. Remember, you're supposed to be her best friend, not the final boss of a horror movie."

The door closed before Jungkook could respond.

For several seconds, the penthouse remained silent.

Then Jungkook reached for his phone.

He opened his messages, scrolled past dozens of unread notifications, and stopped at a conversation he could have found with his eyes closed.

Kim Y/N.

Her profile picture was a photograph of a cat wearing an absurdly tiny pink hat.

He had asked her to change it three times.

She had refused all three times.

His thumb hovered over the screen.

He typed a message.

Are you coming to the office today?

He stared at it for a moment before deleting the entire sentence.

Too obvious.

He tried again.

Don't forget to eat breakfast.

He deleted that too.

Ridiculous.

Finally, he locked his phone, placed it face down on the table, and muttered something under his breath.

Seven years.

He had loved her for seven years, and somehow, sending her a simple message had become more difficult than negotiating with men who would happily put a bullet in his head.

Pathetic.

Absolutely pathetic.

And if anyone ever found out, he would deny it until his last breath.

8:05 A.M. β€” JEON CORPORATION

The conference room was filled with six people, several folders, two laptops, and one very unhappy Park Jimin.

"I am telling you right now," Jimin declared, pointing a pen at the empty chair at the head of the table, "if he changes the meeting time one more time, I am personally sending him my resignation."

RosΓ©, sitting beside her husband, did not even look up from her tablet.

"You said that last week."

"And I meant it last week."

"You also said it the week before."

"Because he did it the week before!"

Across the table, Jennie laughed softly while Taehyung leaned against her shoulder.

"Just send it, Jimin," Yoongi suggested, scrolling through the documents on his laptop. "I'll even help you pack."

Lisa, seated beside her husband, lifted her coffee.

"Please do. Maybe then we'll have five minutes of peace."

Jimin stared at all of them in disbelief.

"I hate this company."

"No, you don't," RosΓ© replied, kissing his cheek before returning to her work.

He immediately softened.

"You're lucky you're pretty."

"You're lucky I married you."

"See? This is emotional abuse."

Yoongi snorted.

The doors opened.

Every conversation stopped.

Jungkook entered the room wearing a perfectly tailored black suit, his expression colder than the winter air outside. Two security officers followed him before remaining near the entrance.

His gaze moved across the table.

"Are we having a meeting or a family gathering?"

Everyone straightened.

Well, almost everyone.

Taehyung continued leaning against Jennie.

"Both. We have snacks."

Jungkook stared at him.

Taehyung sat upright.

"Meeting. Definitely a meeting."

Jungkook took his seat at the head of the table, placed a folder in front of him, and opened it.

"Let's begin."

The next forty minutes were enough to remind everyone why Jungkook was feared.

A shipment had been delayed. Two accounts required investigation. A business partner had apparently decided that the terms of their agreement were optional.

Jungkook listened to each report without interrupting.

Then he asked questions.

Precise questions.

Uncomfortable questions.

Questions that exposed every inconsistency in a person's explanation.

By the time the discussion reached the delayed shipment, the atmosphere had become so tense that even Jimin had stopped complaining.

"Who approved the change in route?" Jungkook asked.

One of the department managers swallowed.

"I did, sir. We received information that the original route might have been compromised."

"From whom?"

The manager hesitated.

Jungkook slowly raised his eyes.

"I asked you a question."

"The information came from an external contact."

"Name."

"Iβ€”I'm still verifyingβ€”"

"Then why," Jungkook interrupted, his voice frighteningly calm, "did you authorize a change to a shipment worth several million dollars based on information you haven't verified?"

The man went pale.

"I apologize, sir."

"I didn't ask for an apology."

Silence.

Jungkook closed the folder.

"You have until noon to give me the name of the person who contacted you. Until then, you are suspended from all operational decisions. If I discover that you knowingly compromised this organization, your employment will be the least of your concerns."

"Yes, sir."

The manager practically fled the room.

Jungkook turned to the others.

"Anything else?"

Nobody answered.

"Good. Yoongi, review the accounts. Taehyung, I want the report on our external contacts before the end of the day. Jimin, handle the legal side. Lisa, coordinate with the security team. RosΓ©, review the financial discrepancies with Yoongi. Jennie, I want the revised contracts on my desk this afternoon."

Everyone nodded.

"Understood."

"Meeting dismissed."

Chairs moved. Laptops closed. Papers were collected.

As Jungkook gathered his documents, Taehyung lingered beside his chair.

"So," he began, "about Y/Nβ€”"

"No."

"You don't even know what I'm going to say."

"I know you."

"Fair point."

Jungkook stood.

Taehyung followed him toward the door.

"She might come around eleven."

"I heard you the first time."

"She's bringing coffee."

Jungkook stopped.

Taehyung's smile widened.

"Interesting reaction."

"What reaction?"

"You stopped walking."

"I was checking something."

"On the wall?"

Jungkook looked at the wall.

Then he looked at Taehyung.

"Do you want to die today?"

"Not particularly. Jennie has plans for dinner."

Jungkook walked away.

Taehyung watched him go, laughing quietly.

Seven years, and the most feared man in New York still couldn't admit that one woman's coffee order could determine the quality of his entire day.

Unbelievable.

10:42 A.M. — LITTLE CORNER CAFÉ, MANHATTAN

"One caramel latte, two Americanos, and a cappuccino."

Y/N placed the cups carefully on the counter, checked the names written on them, and slid the tray toward a waiting customer.

"Have a lovely day!"

The customer smiled and left.

Y/N turned toward the next order just as her coworker, Emily, appeared beside her with a mischievous expression.

"You're smiling again."

Y/N blinked.

"What?"

"That smile."

"What smile?"

"The one you get whenever your phone lights up."

Y/N immediately reached for her phone.

"I do not have a special smile."

Emily raised an eyebrow.

"Sure."

"I don't."

"Okay. So if I look at your messages, I won't find anything interesting?"

"No!"

Emily burst out laughing.

Y/N groaned and hid her face behind her hands.

At twenty-five, Kim Y/N had learned many things about life. She had learned how to survive grief, how to stand on her own feet, and how to smile even on days when everything felt unbearably heavy.

What she had not learned was how to behave normally around Jeon Jungkook.

It was embarrassing, really.

She could speak confidently to difficult customers, negotiate her work schedule, and handle an entire morning rush without losing her patience.

But one message from him?

One stupid message?

Her heart behaved as if she had just received a marriage proposal.

She hated it.

She hated him.

She hated the fact that she loved him.

And she especially hated the fact that he had absolutely no idea.

Well, perhaps he had some idea.

Jungkook was annoyingly observant. He noticed everything, from the smallest change in her hairstyle to the way she became quiet whenever someone mentioned her parents. Sometimes she caught him looking at her with an expression she couldn't quite understand, and for a brief moment, she wondered whether he might feel the same way.

Then he would call her a troublemaker, steal food from her plate, or tell her that she was being dramatic.

And she would remember that confessing her feelings would probably be the worst decision of her entire life.

"Earth to Y/N."

Emily snapped her fingers.

Y/N looked up.

"What?"

"You're staring at your phone again."

"I'm checking the time."

"Your phone is upside down."

Y/N immediately turned it over.

Emily laughed so hard that she had to lean against the counter.

"You're hopeless."

"You're fired."

"I don't work for you."

"Details."

The bell above the cafΓ© door rang, and Y/N turned automatically.

A regular customer walked in, followed by a young woman carrying a toddler. The familiar warmth of the cafΓ© settled around her again, filling her thoughts with something wonderfully ordinary.

This was the life she had chosen.

No weapons.

No threats.

No men standing outside her apartment because someone had decided to make a point.

Just coffee, warm pastries, friendly customers, and the comforting rhythm of a place where nobody expected her to be anything other than herself.

She loved her friends, but she knew what their world looked like. She had seen enough during her teenage years to understand that the people she cared about lived with dangers most ordinary people could never imagine.

Jungkook's world was especially dangerous.

She had never forgotten the first time she saw him covered in blood that wasn't his own, standing outside her hospital room with a face so cold that nobody dared approach him.

She had been seventeen then.

Frightened, exhausted, and desperately searching for a reason to believe that her life had not ended with her parents' deaths.

Jungkook had sat beside her bed through the longest night of her life.

He had not told her everything would be fine.

He had not offered empty promises.

He had simply held her hand and stayed.

And somehow, that had been enough.

Since then, he had become a constant presence in her life. Sometimes infuriating. Sometimes overprotective. Sometimes unexpectedly gentle.

Always Jungkook.

The boy who had saved her had grown into a man feared by an entire city.

But whenever he looked at her, she could still recognize the person who had once refused to leave her alone in a hospital room.

Her phone vibrated.

Y/N glanced down.

JEON JUNGKOOK: Where are you?

She stared at the message.

Then she frowned.

KIM Y/N: At work? As I am every weekday? Do you need a calendar, old man?

His response arrived almost immediately.

JEON JUNGKOOK: Watch your mouth, troublemaker.

Y/N bit back a smile.

KIM Y/N: Make me, grandpa.

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

JEON JUNGKOOK: You're coming to the office.

Y/N blinked.

KIM Y/N: Excuse me?

JEON JUNGKOOK: You heard me.

KIM Y/N: I have a job, Jeon.

JEON JUNGKOOK: Congratulations.

KIM Y/N: I hate you.

JEON JUNGKOOK: No, you don't.

Y/N stopped smiling.

For one strange second, she simply stared at the screen.

Because the worst part was that he was right.

She didn't hate him.

She had never hated him.

And sometimes, when he said things like that, she wondered whether he knew exactly how much power he had over her.

Another message appeared.

JEON JUNGKOOK: I'll send someone to pick you up.

Her eyes widened.

KIM Y/N: YOU WILL DO NO SUCH THING.

JEON JUNGKOOK: Ten minutes.

KIM Y/N: JUNGKOOK!

JEON JUNGKOOK: Eleven, if you keep shouting.

Y/N let out an incredulous laugh.

Emily, who had been watching her from the other side of the counter, slowly folded her arms.

"That him?"

"No."

Emily looked at her phone.

Y/N turned it against her chest.

"Mind your business."

"Oh, it's definitely him."

"Emily."

"You're blushing."

"I am not!"

The cafΓ© door opened again, and Y/N glanced toward it.

A familiar black car had pulled up outside.

She closed her eyes.

Of course.

Of course, he had actually sent someone.

Because Jeon Jungkook was apparently incapable of understanding the concept of a normal request.

She grabbed her coat and bag, informed Emily that she would be back as soon as possible, and stepped outside into the cool Manhattan air.

The driver opened the back door.

"Miss Kim."

Y/N offered him a polite smile.

"Hi, Daniel."

"Mr. Jeon is expecting you."

"Naturally."

She climbed into the car.

As it pulled away from the curb, Y/N looked through the window at the familiar streets passing by.

She had no idea why Jungkook wanted her at the office.

She had no idea that her arrival would interrupt a conversation he had been dreading.

And she certainly had no idea that, somewhere across the city, a man who had spent years searching for a way to destroy Jeon Jungkook had finally discovered the one name that mattered.

Kim Y/N.

The woman Jungkook loved.

The woman he had never confessed his feelings to.

The woman who had no idea how dangerous it was to be loved by a man like him.

βΈ»

11:16 A.M. β€” JEON CORPORATION, PRIVATE FLOOR

The elevator doors opened, and Y/N stepped into the familiar hallway.

She had visited the building countless times over the years. She knew the receptionists, recognized the security guards, and could probably find her way to Jungkook's office with her eyes closed.

Still, she couldn't help noticing the way people straightened whenever he appeared in the corridor.

The fear surrounding him was almost tangible.

Employees lowered their voices when he passed. Security officers moved immediately when he gave an instruction. Even the most confident businessmen seemed to become careful with their words whenever Jungkook entered a room.

Y/N found it fascinating.

And a little ridiculous.

Because the same man who could silence an entire conference room had once spent twenty minutes arguing with her over the last slice of pizza.

She reached his office door and knocked twice.

"Come in."

Y/N pushed it open.

Jungkook stood beside his desk, reading a document. His black suit was immaculate, his dark hair fell naturally across his forehead, and his expression suggested that the entire world had disappointed him before lunch.

He looked up.

For one brief moment, his gaze softened.

It was barely noticeable.

But Y/N noticed.

She always noticed.

"Hey, troublemaker."

There it was.

That voice.

That infuriatingly familiar greeting that made her heart do something profoundly embarrassing.

She crossed her arms.

"You kidnapped me from work."

"I sent a car."

"Without asking."

"You would have said no."

"Because I have a job!"

"Congratulations. You mentioned that."

Y/N stared at him.

He stared back.

Then, slowly, she narrowed her eyes.

"You are the most annoying person I've ever met."

"And yet, here you are."

"Against my will."

"The door was unlocked."

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then pointed at him.

"One day, Jeon Jungkook, I am going to throw something at your head."

He looked at the coffee cup she was holding.

"Not the coffee."

She blinked.

Then she laughed.

And there it was again.

That sound.

The one that made something inside his chest loosen, even after a morning filled with problems, threats, and men who could not seem to perform the simplest tasks without disappointing him.

Jungkook watched her for a second longer than necessary.

He wanted to tell her that she looked beautiful.

He wanted to ask whether she had eaten breakfast.

He wanted to know whether she had slept well, whether anything had upset her, whether someone at the cafΓ© had made her uncomfortable.

He wanted to tell her that he had thought about her the moment he woke up.

Instead, he reached for the coffee she was holding.

"What did you bring?"

Y/N pulled it away.

"Excuse me? This is mine."

"You brought it to my office."

"For myself!"

"Selfish."

"Criminal."

"Troublemaker."

"Emotionally constipated grandpa."

Jungkook slowly lowered his hand.

From the sofa, Taehyung made a strangled sound.

Jennie covered her mouth.

Jimin looked at RosΓ©.

RosΓ© looked at Yoongi.

Yoongi looked at Lisa.

Lisa whispered, "She's going to get herself killed."

But Jungkook wasn't angry.

He was looking at Y/N as if she had just handed him something precious without even realizing it.

Then the corner of his mouth lifted.

A small smile.

Almost invisible.

But real.

"Come here," he said.

Y/N raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

"I want to show you something."

"Is it a body?"

"Not yet."

She gasped.

"JEON JUNGKOOK!"

The entire room erupted in laughter.

Even Yoongi smiled.

Jungkook simply shook his head, reached for her wrist, and gently guided her toward the desk.

His touch was brief.

Careful.

Almost hesitant.

Y/N followed him, still muttering insults under her breath, completely unaware of the way his fingers lingered for one extra second before he let go.

Seven years.

Seven years of loving her silently.

Seven years of watching her smile at him without knowing that she was the only person who could make his world feel less dark.

And there she stood, close enough for him to reach out and pull her into his arms, yet impossibly far away because neither of them knew how to cross the distance between friendship and love.

Jungkook looked down at her.

"Did you eat?"

Y/N blinked.

"What?"

"Breakfast."

She hesitated.

He narrowed his eyes.

"Y/N."

"I had a cookie."

"A cookie."

"And half a muffin."

"That's not breakfast."

"It had chocolate."

"That's not an argument."

"It is in my world."

He exhaled slowly, already reaching for his phone.

Y/N immediately grabbed his wrist.

"Don't you dare order food."

He looked at her hand around his wrist.

Then at her face.

Something changed in his expression.

For a second, the room seemed to grow quieter.

Y/N realized what she was doing and released him quickly.

"Sorry," she mumbled.

Jungkook said nothing.

He could still feel the warmth of her fingers against his skin.

It was ridiculous.

He had faced armed enemies without blinking. He had stood in rooms where every person present wanted something from him. He had made decisions that could change the course of his entire organization.

And yet one accidental touch from Y/N could leave him forgetting what he had intended to say.

He cleared his throat.

"Sit down. I'll have something brought up."

She rolled her eyes.

"Bossy."

"Undisciplined."

"Control freak."

"Brat."

"Grandpa."

Taehyung burst out laughing again.

"Please," he said, wiping an imaginary tear from his eye. "Never change, you two."

Jungkook shot him a warning look.

Taehyung immediately became interested in his phone.

Y/N took the chair beside Jungkook's desk and settled into it comfortably, as though she belonged there.

Perhaps that was the problem.

She did belong there.

Not because of his money or his power, not because she had any interest in his organization, but because she had become part of his life so naturally that he could no longer remember what it felt like before her.

She was the only person who could walk into his office without fear.

The only person who could insult him and leave smiling.

The only person who could touch his wrist without making him instinctively pull away.

The only person who could make Jeon Jungkook feel like a man instead of a weapon.

And somewhere in the city, an enemy was preparing to take that away from him.

Jungkook's phone vibrated.

His expression changed as he glanced at the screen.

One message.

One unfamiliar number.

UNKNOWN: You have built quite an empire, Jeon. It would be a shame if someone found the one thing you cannot afford to lose.

For several seconds, Jungkook stared at the message.

The warmth disappeared from his face.

His jaw tightened.

His fingers closed around the phone until his knuckles turned pale.

Across the desk, Y/N was laughing at something Jennie had said, completely unaware of the sudden change in the man beside her.

Jungkook lifted his eyes toward her.

She was smiling.

God, she was smiling.

And he would rather watch the entire city burn than allow anyone to take that smile away from her.

His phone vibrated again.

UNKNOWN: Enjoy the time you have left with her.

The room seemed to freeze.

Jungkook slowly locked his phone and slipped it into his pocket.

When he looked at Y/N again, the expression on his face was the same one the world knew.

Cold.

Unreadable.

Dangerous.

But beneath the table, his hand had curled into a fist.

Because the enemy had made one mistake.

He had mistaken Jungkook's love for a weakness he could exploit without consequences.

And Jeon Jungkook was about to teach him just how wrong he was.

Y/N turned toward him.

"Jungkook?"

He looked at her immediately.

"What?"

"Are you okay?"

For one second, he almost told her everything.

Almost.

Then he reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

"I'm fine, troublemaker."

She studied him suspiciously.

"You look like you want to murder someone."

His thumb paused near her cheek.

Then, despite everything, he let out a quiet laugh.

"Maybe I do."

Y/N shook her head.

"You're impossible."

"And you're annoying."

She smiled at him.

He smiled back.

Neither of them knew that their lives had just begun to change.

Neither of them knew that seven years of silence were about to be tested by secrets, jealousy, danger, and a love neither had been brave enough to confess.

And neither of them knew that the man who had once saved Y/N's life would soon have to decide how far he was willing to go to keep her alive.

Because the devil had a weakness.

And for the first time in seven years, someone had finally discovered her name.

Kim Y/N.
