Chapter 1
Do you ever just wake up and think what am I doing with my life? I have, every time I wake up I wonder Why me? I live Berksville also known as Snoozeville. It’s a small town located on the border between Maryland and Delaware, although I’m not entirely sure which state it’s in. Life here is boring. It’s always the same. Same people, same faces, same stories, same endings. Not a lot of people leave this town, but I will. Someday.
I let out a long breath and rise from the small heaven that is my bed and walk through the lavish corridors of my house into my kitchen. My family comes from old money, dozens of people before my family have lived in this house. Nowadays, it’s just me and my little sister Cora. She’s my motivation to get out of bed every morning. Without her who knows what I would’ve turned out to be.
“Holden!” I hear a little voice yell. I watch as she skips down the stairs with my favorite goofy smile across her face. Her long brown pigtails swing in the air as she hops up onto her chair for breakfast. Her bright blue eyes are a reflection of our mother’s, though she will only have picture to compare them to.
“Morning Carebear” I say while smiling. “How’d you sleep last night?”
“My tooth kept me up all night” she tried to say. It came out in as a mush of sounds because of the fingers in her mouth working to rip out her baby tooth.
“Easy now, you don’t wanna rip your jaw out now would you?” I watch her face crumble in terror.
Half a second later her smiled returned, “you’re silly” she laughs. “What’s for breakfast Bubba?”
“That depends, what does your little heart desire?”
“Pancakes!” she exclaimed, her smile lighting up her face. I live to see that smile.
After a few protests I manage to get her out of the chair and head for her school. Checking the time on the dash I speed up slightly, but not enough for Cora to notice. I don’t want her to know that I’m late to school everyday because our father doesn’t care enough to take her to school in the morning. He was a good husband and father when my mother was around but after she passed he picked up some bad habits. None in which a five year old should have to worry about.
After pinky promising we can watch a movie tonight Cora runs off to her friends, pigtails swinging around her.
I check my watch to see that it’s seven-o-one. Shit, I’m late again. Grigg’s is gonna kill me.
