Chapter 1

Elizabeth~

“Mama! Mama!“I heard my twins, Mason and Annie, shout as they jumped on me continuously. Waking up to an alarm clock is one thing, but waking up to screaming twins is another.

“I’m up.“I said getting them off of me.

“What’s for breakfast mama?“my little girl asked as I got out of bed.

“Well, it’s going to have to be something quick because mommy has to go to work early today.“I told them.

“Does that mean Aunt Jenna is going to take us to school too?“Mason asked sadly.

“Yeah buddy. But, hey, I promise that this weekend, I’m going to take you both to the park. Doesn’t that sound like fun?“I asked him. His frown was replaced with this gigantic smile. He loved the park, as did Annie.

“Okay mommy,“ he said hopping off of the bed.

“Alright, now I’m going to get you two dressed so you can eat and then I’m going to drop you off at Aunt Jenna’s,“I told them. I walked them over to their room across the hall and started picking out their clothes. I put Annie in a blue, ruffled, dress and light blue sneakers with a grey hair piece, and I put Mason in a light blue shirt with jeans and grey sneakers. I gave them some cereal and once they were done, I had them grab their school bags and I drove them to my sister’s house.

“Hey sis, hey kids.“Jenna greeted us as we entered her house.

“Hey. I am at work until 5:30, so I need you to pick them up from school if that’s okay.“I said.

“Yeah, that’s fine. My shift at the hospital doesn’t start until 7. I got stuck with the late shift.“ she told me. I hugged her quickly and then knelt down towards my kids.

“I love you both and have fun. This year is your last year of pre-school.“I said kissing their cheeks and hugging them. I got up and before I could walk out, I heard my sister call after me.

“Elizabeth.” I turned around. “Yeah?“I said with a shrug. “You might wanna change,“ she said pointing towards my clothes. It was only then that I realized that I was still in my snoopy pajamas. “Shit.“I said. “Mommy said a bad word!“Annie shouted. “I have something you can borrow.“Jenna said leading me towards her closet. She gave me a pink top and jeans. I quickly got dressed, thanked my sister, kissed my kids again, and left. “Hey Ronnie.“I said as I got into the diner. “Hey Elizabeth. Jane needs needs your help out front.“he said while putting his apron around his waist. Ronnie is our cook, has been since before I started working here when I was seventeen. Other than my sister and Jane, he was my biggest supporter when I had the twins about seven months after I started working here. Yeah, I was a teen mom. Deal with it. “Those frat guys again?“I asked him. “Yeah. Those two are rude sons-of-bitches.“he said passing me a Pepsi and Lemonade. “These go to Table 5.“he said before heading back towards the kitchen. I walked over to Table 5 and gave them their drinks. I heard a snapping sound and an annoying voice calling Jane over to the table. I looked and saw those two frats again. Jane and I glanced at each other. I shook my head and mouthed ‘I’ll handle it.’ She nodded and walked the other way from the table as I approached it. “Hi, what can I get ya?“I asked the one who was snapping. Before he could respond, I snapped in his face. “Is that annoying?“I asked before snapping again. “Is that obnoxious and rude?“I asked before continuing my snapping. “Would you find it distracting if someone did that to you while you were trying to work? Oh, you don’t have a job, sorry.“I said with a fake chuckle. “Damn, dude. She burned you.“the other one said. I snapped in his face to get his attention. “Oh, no hipster. Do not think we’re on the same team. We have nothing in common. I wear knit-hats when it’s cold out, you wear knit-hats because of Coldplay. You have tattoos to piss off your dad, my dad doesn’t care about me.“I told him before turning back to the one I was talking to earlier. “And finally, you think-” I snapped. “This is the sound that gets you service, I think-” More snapping. “I think this is the sound that makes me wanna smack you over the head with a beer bottle.“I said. “We just need more ketchup for our hash-browns.“he said sounding nervous. “Please.“the other stated. “And that ladies, is how you treat a waitress.“I said walking off to get the extra ketchup. I grabbed some from the kitchen and headed back to the table. When I got back, I noticed that they had taken off their hats. I gave them the ketchup before returning to work.
