Chapter 1

Music has had a major impact on our lives; dating back to when man first walked on the earth. It can change from slow and calming to fast and thunderous. Some don't even have instruments as it solely relies on a person's voice.

Music is really spectacular. Especially for my parents. My dad is a composer and my mum used to be a singer. Her group only had one hit before they split up. Not long after my mum and dad met and...well...you know.

My name is Melody Fisher and I'm the daughter of two music enthusiasts. From the age of five I was given singing lessons and by ten I learned how to play three musical instruments. Now at the age of sixteen I can play the guitar, piano, trumpet, violin and saxophone; just as easy as repeating my ABC'S.

My parents are also very strict when it comes to my school work. Thanks to them and their harsh ways, I'm straight A student. But now that exams are over, the only thing I needed to worry about is what Sixth Form I was going to.

It was now summer and, surprisingly, it was warm enough to go to the park with my friends from school. One of my friends, Amelia, asked me, "Hey Melody, what Sixth Form have you applied for? I mean, it's already halfway through our summer break."

I smiled. "Well, I've applied for Trings Park boarding school."

The girls gasped, but I was not surprised. It is one of the most prestigious school in England and very hard to get into. Frankie looked at me, confused, "But you can't afford to go to Trings Park. I mean, no offence, but only the rich go there."

I lied down on the grass; my long, brown hair spread out and I replied, "I know that, but I was offered a scholarship so I see no reason why I can't go."

They both shrugged and went back to gossiping. You see when you live in a small town like Romford everyone gossips and has an opinion of you, no matter how much you try and avoid it. That was another reason why I wanted to go to Trings Park, it is a chance to escape.

A few hours later I went home, very tired of all the gossiping. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a very excited mum. "Melody, you did it! I am so proud of you!"

I looked at her and asked, "What are you talking about?"

Dad walked up to me and patted my shoulder. "You got into Trings Park. The letter came through today."

I sighed at their happiness. "You do know that it's illegal to open other people's mail, right?"

Mum, obviously too excited, dismissed the thought. "Oh minor details, dear. Starting September, you are on your way to your musical career. Next you'll be marrying a rich man."

"Mum! I'm far too young to even think about marriage!" Although I didn't sound excited, the person inside my head was jumping up and down in glee.

So throughout August I spent my time packing my things and practicing, courtesy of my parents being paranoid that I still wasn't good enough. However, being able to play well enough was the least of my problems.

It was the people I was worried about.

What if I can't make new friends? Even if they are rich people I'm sure they're the same as everyone else right?

Just then my mum burst into my room smiling. "Can I just say I am expecting you to find a possible husband."

Dad quickly followed after with, "Rich or not she is not getting married for a long time!"

September can't come any sooner...
