“I don’t want you to go” she whispered he just pulled her closer. “You know I have to... last time remember?” He responded he’s been in the army for five years joining directly after high school, but not before marrying his high school sweetheart.
“I don’t wanna be alone again!” She whispered tears rolling off her face. The fear of never seeing him again bit at her, but that was always the risk. “I’ll call, promise.” She nodded knowing that he will call. Who will hold her at night when she’s scared, who’s going to joke around about her cooking, not that she was a bad cook, but at one point she did burn water so the last statement was debatable.
Pulling out the gift he had made for her, he slipped it around her neck, “me and you baby.” He said, “I’ll be back promise.” She looked down at the dog tags, one had her name and the other had his, her lips wobbled a bit more before the dam that was holding what little self-control she had left broke, turning into a sniffling and blabbering mess.
“Bye Baby.” He whispered, kissing her on her head before going to his transportation that will take him to the airfield.
*three months later *
" mamma, did he call" she yelled out to her mother in law who was upstairs putting clothes away. she heard the phone ringing and couldn't help but hope it was him, its been almost a month since he last called and she had important news to tell him.
"no baby it was just Jan." was the response. with a sigh of defeat she went back to decorating the cake she had made earlier. her passion was baking, and she was good at it. the pink and blue colors blended together to make a swirly purple color in the middle. this was the first time she was making a gender reveal cake and couldn't wait till she had the chance to make her own.
"soon daddy will know bean," she whispered to her belly, no bump was present but she had rounded out a little bit around her once flat belly. she heard a knock at the door and went to answer, the door was open leaving the screen to keep out the bugs, the base was safe so she didn't really mind keeping it open.
the military men standing at the door with straight expressions went over the words of loss once more in their heads not knowing how she would take it. Leanne was one of them, she had helped them out over and over again since she moved to the base really young and a lot of wives took her under their wings, taught her a lot.
at the tender age of 22 almost 23, Leanne was the youngest military wife at the base. that didn't slow her down though she catered every event with A cake and made sure new wives knew what they were getting into, especially younger ones.
rounding the corner the hand towel she was using to dry her hands dropped to the floor followed by her, her head shook and the word 'no' was repeated. the men could do nothing but watch. When her mother in law came down minutes later she didn’t see the men at the door but her daughter in law on the floor.
“What happened lea?” She asked kneeling down beside her, a low knock on the door gained her attention, the men at the door stood frozen having to confront both women.
She went to the door back straight arms tucked tightly under her bust, “can I help you, boys?” She asked eyeing them up and down, it didn’t have to be bad news she told herself, maybe he’s coming home early.
“We’re so sorry to miss...”
