Excellent zombie novel!
"I read a lot of indie novels and I've read a LOT of zombie novels. And I'm an editor. And very critical and picky. So when I say I was extremely impressed by this, that's high praise. There were a few chapters where the text was published with the editing corrections included, making it hard to read, but I simply didn't care, I was so engrossed in the story. On top of that, I did something I have never done before: I read the entire book on my phone. Never thought I'd see the day (I usually read on Kindle). This is a very well told, character- and plot-driven story. The characters are well rounded and individual. I love that they are not cardboard cut-outs and a litany of clichés, but believable people with good and bad sides to them. The pacing is edge-of-your-seat gripping. The cliffhangers at the ends of chapters had me breathlessly clicking to the next chapter. While standing in the kitchen, late, in my pyjamas, shivering with cold... Normally I like my zombies to be the standard, slow-moving, dumb, brain-chasing Zs that we have come to know and love. I don't like much innovation. Here, there's a twist but it's a twist that makes sense in the story and it just works. The Final Diary reminded me of David Moody's books, regarding pacing and action, and the sort of shambolic sequence of events (which add to the immediacy and tension), but this is better written and has more likable characters. Other reviewers compare it to Stephen King's Cell. This is way better (I love King's books, but not Cell). I was sorry to see that this was published in 2014 and the author doesn't appear to have published other novels. Simister really seems to have what it takes. I'd snap up a sequel to this."
