Chapter 1
My name is Alaska Brumby and I am 10 years old and life is very tough for me living with everything in my house. Seriously I live with my mum, dad, older sister Frost, younger sister Snow, 2 cats, 3 dogs, 2 budgerigars and 1 guinea pig. You can see why. There are 13 of us altogether in the house. Very unlucky.
Let me tell you a bit about myself. As I said before I am 10 years old. I am not a girly girl I am a tomboy. I hate dresses and skirts, I prefer to wear shorts, a singlet and a denim jacket. I am smart, strong, cheeky, funny, inquisitive and I am an animal lover. My two best friends are Storm and Ember. I love adventures, climbing (trees) and challenges.
My favourite animal is a Brumby. A Brumby is a wild Australian horse they are beautiful. Also, I like them as my last name is Brumby, weird right? My next to favourite animals are wolves and leopards as I can’t decide.
Anyway, let me get back to telling you about what is going on.
At the moment it is 6 am on the 13th of June and I lay awake in bed listening to my pet guinea pig Chocolate being noisy by making screeching sounds ( like this-Eee Eee or close to that) because he is hungry. He is so annoying of a morning. I can’t take it anymore so I get out of bed and feed Chocolate some mix and fresh fruit and veg. After I feed him I then sneak out of my bedroom to wake up my older sister Frost (who is 13 years old and very lazy), who is fast asleep in the lounge room on the couch.
“Another late night I suppose!” I yell at Frost, who jolts awake.
“Why did you have to wake me up at 6:15 Sis?” Frost shouts back.
“Because Chocolate woke me up so I decided to wake you up.”
“Still why do-”
“There was no one else to wake up that had to go to Storm’s birthday.” Frost stares at me dumbstruck. “Why aren’t you getting ready then?” I say sharply.
Frost leaves the room and mumbles something like ‘yeah don’t boss me around.’ I then get a present out of the cupboard which is a MINECRAFT MOD set and write.
‘To Storm Nightmare Happy 11th Birthday from Alaska Brumby your BFFL.’
Sighing I put the present in my bag I was taking to the sleepover tonight. With another sigh, I get my breakfast, which is toast with raspberry jam and butter. I think about my birthday coming up in about one week but Frost interrupts my thoughts.
“So when are we leaving to go to Storm’s house, Miss Bossy boots?”
“When Mum and Dad get up unless you’re walking because if you are I suggest you leave right n-”
“I hope you aren’t arguing girls?”
Mum had just entered the room fully dressed so it looked like she had been up for a while and she also had bags under her eyes so it is usually best not to argue with her but I was not going down without a fight.
“No I’m not but Frost is arguing with herself Mu-”
“Oh be quiet Alaska and hop in the car or you’ll be late for Storm’s do you understand?” I usually know when I lose a fight and in this case, I had lost two of them, one with mum and the other with Frost.
I see my younger sister Snow come out of the hall looking confused on all the shouting. Mum waves her off and she goes to the carport.
Sighing I get into our Holden with mum and Frost and then we drove off. 10 painful minutes later (with Frost sitting next to you for the whole entire trip was literally enough to murder someone) Frost and I arrived at Storms and Lightning’s house with the present in my bag.
Storm is one of my BFFL’s who can be more annoying than a crocodile trying to eat you. Confusing? Well never mind. Lightning is Storm’s younger brother and I think he got that name because he was born with a lightning-shaped birthmark on his ankle. Also as a coincidence, he is very fast, very weird don’t you agree.
Just now Ember Autumn, my other BFFL, comes running over to me straight away.
“What’s up Ember -” I start but she thrusts a note into my hand.
It reads
You’ll be mine very soon no one can save you anymore. Bye, bye Storm, Ember and Alaska. See you on the 30th of your birth month. You are the CO.
I gasp and hold the note away from me like it is a bomb. Then I finally pick up the courage and to ask.
“When did you get the-”
“No we got it today, all of us got this one note and this person scares the life out of me and Ember. I bet you 1 million dollars that you’re scared just as much.”
I turn around to see Storm who had just appeared out of nowhere. When she had finished speaking, all of us looked terrified like that we had just been told what we were drinking was poison. Just then Lightning came over to us three girls.
“Why are you looking so terrified like someone has died?” He asks, confused.
We all laughed but in a sad way.
“No one has died but it’s like we were drinking something and then they tell us it is poison and we also got a note that makes us feel that way.” We say together
This time he laughed shyly and then tried to cover up what he just did. When he reads the note he looks more terrified than us once he finishes reading the note. He then drops and I assume runs inside to tell our parents.
The three of us look at each other in a way that it looks like we were asking the same question to each other and we were.
‘What do we do now and what we tell them, the truth or lie about it?’
We are very confused and it was too late to do anything now because our parents are right in front of us and very, very angry or scared but I knew we were in big trouble. Storm just looks like she was is to burst into tears when her mum shouts out to us.
“Explain yourselves right now and no lies!” The three of us just stare at the ground not knowing what to say. After about thirty seconds Storm starts glaring at her brother and Ember’s dad notices so he whispers something into Lightning’s ear.
Lightning picks something off the ground and gives it to him. He reads it. Then he gives it to the other parents. They read it. Now all of us girls are staring at our parents and they are smiling at us strangely with the look of triumph on their faces. Now we’re in more trouble than we know. I reckon in about a minute we will be bombarded with questions so they can try and figure out what’s going on.
