Chapter 1: My Not So Normal Day
The sunlight beams through the blinds right on my face, waking me up groggily. The manga book I was reading late last night still laying on my chest. Rubbing the blurriness from my eyes. I stood up in my white tank top and loose elastic blue shorts. I went to use the restroom.
“Breakfast is ready! Come eat and get ready for school.” I hear my mom yell through the restroom door. I finish doing my business and quickly wash my hands and face. My shoulder length hair falling over my face. I grabbed the brush on the counter to brush out the tangles out my hair.
I returned to my room to get dressed in regular clothes, picking up some used jeans on the floor. I did the sniff test to check if they’re decent. Grabbed my light green Zelda shirt in my closet and my backpack off the floor. I opened my bag to double check if I my Nintendo Switch, phone, and charger were still inside. After getting dressed and stumbling with my shoes. I stepped out to say good morning and hug my parents. The aroma of fresh bacon filled the air.
“Thanks Mom, mmm I love bacon” I said thankfully and I started to munch on some bacon. Who doesn’t love bacon? I sat down on the couch with a couple of sunny side up eggs , half a croissant with strawberry jam and four slices of crispy mouth watering bacon. My long straight hair falling in my face and almost in my food.
“Mom, do you have any hair ties? I always seem to lose them.” I say while moving my hair behind my ears annoyingly and strands of it falling over my ears.
“Here honey” She said pulling the one holding her dark brown in a loose ponytail and handing it to me. Her hair falling softly down the middle of her back.
“Thanks Mom, I’ll give it back later.” then started to tie my hair back in a tighter ponytail. I got my straight hair from my mom but the thickness from my dad. I don’t have to worry about being bald.
My dad and I had the same breakfast, while my mom was eating cooked salmon with rice and miso soup. My mom is Japanese and my dad is white. So, sometimes we eat a more traditional Japanese breakfast like she is now but, I prefer traditional American style. I don’t really consider myself that Asian. Being born and raised in Southern California and I only speak English. I love my mom but she doesn’t have the patience to teach me Japanese. I asked her about teaching me and told me to learn online.
“Max, it’s almost time for school”, my dad said abruptly.
My dad getting up and wiping off crumbs off his belly. Grabbing his keys and phone before we both gave my mom a big hug before heading off. We drove up in the parking lot next to the flag pole. After giving my dad a side hug in the car and opened the door to step out. Waving my dad away as the black sedan drives off. I sigh and turn around to go through the gates of hell.
Herbert High School is definitely not like what you see in High School Musical. It doesn’t have preppy beautiful people that burst into song and dance. I’m not really into musicals but only reason I watched the movie is because I think Zac Efron is cute.
Anyways, my school is pretty crappy and financially broke. The school library is like the size of two regular classrooms combined. Most of the books they sell are used with scribbles, cuss words and amateur drawings inside them. The cafeteria is basically in the middle of the school. The food is highly processed and barely tastes like actual food, but hey at least it’s free. They also had some Red Baron pizza for sell and you could buy snacks at the student store.
I usually go to meet my friends in the front quad in the morning before class. My friends and I were the weird group in school. We were like the definition of misfits. Starting with Anna Rodriquez, she was like a big peach; sweet and big. Kimmy Garcia, half Mexican and white goth tomboy with short hair. My best friend Leo Rivera, a fellow geek like myself.
The school didn’t really have the typical stereotypes like you see in movies: like jocks, nerds, punks and cheerleaders. It consisted mostly of Hispanic, black and a handful of Asians that think they’re black. I didn’t mention white because surprisingly I’m like one of a handful of white people and I’m half.
Going through 1st period English and into 2nd period math class through a sleepy daze. Uhh I hate math. When do we need this in everyday life? Besides like basic math. Walking towards one of the big black desks in the back. Mr. Green said good morning to the students started calling off names for attendance.
Placing my backpack on the chair I’m sitting on. The school doesn’t have lockers due to stupid idiots breaking into them when the school is closed. So everyone has to carry everything with them but luckily we’re able to leave our textbooks in class.
“Max Forrest?” Mr. Green announced doing roll call.
“Here” I lazily raise my hand to show in really here.
Resting my head on my folded arms on my desk. I’ll just rest my eyes for a bit as the math teacher drones on.
The lunch bell blares in my head and I’m startled awake. Math paper work stuck to the side of my face by some drool. I quickly peel of the the paper off my face and wipe the remaining drool off my chin with the back of my hand. People all rush out as if Godzilla was attacking San Diego. I made my way over to the back quad to hangout with my friends for lunch. Hugging my girl friends and hand slapping some of my guy friends. I pulled my backpack off my shoulder because it was hurting. I sat on the bench and put my backpack on top of it.
“Have you guys seen the new Avengers trailer? ” I asked, thinking about the trailer I saw on YouTube.
“The one with Captain America holding back Thanos?” My friend Leo asked.
“Yeah, that one. It looked pretty awesome but I don’t understand how he can hold him back. Doesn’t he have the gems?” I said.
“That just shows how much of a badass Capt is. Maybe they weakened Thanos before hand?”
“The Avengers probably beat his ass right before” I agreed.
“I hope they don’t over power Thanos in the movie because I think that’s dumb. I’m tired of boring over powered villains that just want to take over the world. I never understood that reasoning. Like do you want people to worship you and build stupid gold statues in your name?” I ranted thinking about stupid villain cliches.
“Speaking of super heroes. Did you hear about some Asian chick with telekinesis push a guy in the air? I found it on YouTube when I was searching super heroes.” He informed me.
“Really? That would be so awesome if supers powers were real but I would be worried about scientists wanna cut me up like some lab rat. Could you text the link to me? I’ll check it out later.”
Leo Rivera is a fellow senior and comic super hero lover too. He’s more into the book comics than the movies. I’m more into comic book cartoons and movies. We also both liked video games a lot too. I was more a Nintendo fan and he was more PlayStation Fanboy. He’s about the same height as me 5′3 but pretty thin whereas I’m more stocky build. He wore black combat boots and camo pants with black shirts usually. Short brown hair that he used gel to stay up.
The lunch bell started ringing to indicate the end of lunch. I didn’t realize how much time past. Saying bye to my friends, I started to head to the restroom before going to my next class. I quickly used the restroom and started washing my hands. I looked in the mirror realizing I didn’t see my backpack straps. Oh shit my backpack! I suddenly remembered where I left it and rushed out to go back to the table.
When I was walking to my bag, I noticed that Jamal the resident bully was grabbing my bag. A football player with about a foot and probably 40lbs more than me. I didn’t want to fight him. Even though I was short, I had a stocky build and took wrestling class. I don’t like looking for fights.
“Excuse me, but that’s my bag.” I politely informed him and pointed to my black backpack.
“What are you talking about? This is my bag.” Jamal said lying through the gap in his teeth.
“Dude, seriously? Your backpack is already on your back.” I said pointing to the red drawstring bad on his back.
After realizing his lie backfired, he quickly grabbed my backpack. He started running towards the senior building and burst through the two big push bar doors. I chased after him in the building, I didn’t see him but heard loud footsteps up the stairs in front. He must be on the second floor, so I rushed up there. My lungs were burning and my legs were killing me. I didn’t see him but then I saw the maintenance ladder for the roof was down and shaking. Going up to the ladder to look up and saw the hatch was open.
My legs were jello climbing the ladder. I grabbed the edge of the hatch and pulled myself up. I stood up and out of breath. I saw Jamal with my bag, looking for a way off the roof.
“Give it back, asshole!” I said through clenched teeth.
“Here catch!” he suddenly threw it straight up really high. Pushing past me to go down the maintenance hatch and closed it.
Looking straight up to see my backpack just in time. My legs were hurting from running and Jamal knocking me off balance. I reached out to grab my bag and caught it just in time off the ledge of the building. The sudden added weight from it catching me off balance, I twisted around backwards and fell off the roof.
You know how they say in movies everything slows down and your life flashes before your eyes?
Well.... that didn’t happen to me at all. I squeezed my eyes shut to brace for imminent death or a lot of pain.
Felt the rush of air blowing my hair all over my face then it stopped. I thought I died because my body felt lighter like floating in the ocean and tingling. I slowly opened my eyes and didn’t understand what was going on. I was looking straight down on the concrete floor but soon realized I wasn’t touching the ground at all. I was actually a few feet in the air floating.
What the fuck?! I panicked and ungracefully fell. I used my bag just in time to block my face from the floor. Even though it wasn’t that high, the wind was knocked out of me and everything faded to black.
