1.
It was particularly dark that day, and the graveyard was cloaked in fog. Adrian Ackle stepped out of his mother’s black car. The ground was slightly damp from the fog, and slowly sank as he walked across it. It had also rained earlier that day, so his shoes were slick with water. He was dressed in a black suit, the proper attire for a funeral, and his Mother was wearing a black dress and heels.
They walked up to the casket, and quickly lost each other to the crowd, but neither minded. Adrian gazed sadly at the casket his Grandfather was now in. His Grandfather was the closest relative he had. Adrian and his mother were always fighting, his Father abandoned him and his mother when Adrian was 10, and he had no siblings. His grandma had passed away a Long time ago, so, Adrian’s Grandfather has no one else. Adrian was 17 now and shouldn’t be crying over something he’d witnessed so many times, death was not an uncommon thing were he lived, but this one hit him hardest.
Adrian mostly stared off into the distance, until it came to his speech. He quickly said his words, his eyes brimming with tears threatening to spill over, before walking off the podium and back to his spot on the crowd.
Then it came to the burial. Everyone tossed in flowers, before we all watched the casket being slowly lowered into the ground. Soon, everyone filed out, got into their cars, and drove away, but Adrian stayed put. He stared at the gravestone, tracing over the words with his finger:
Acro Ackle
1938 - 2016
father, husban, Son and Grandfather.
Will be missed by many.
He felt empty, he felt like he should be crying, or feeling sadness, or — something! But he just felt empty.
He walked back home, his strawberry blonde hair slightly curly from the fog dampening it. He walked up to the attic.
Adrian remembered his Mother telling him something about his inheritance being up there, handed down to him by the will of his Grandfather. Up there, he found an ebony black chest. He rushed over, examining it.
It was roughly 1 ft tall, 1 ft wide and 1 ft long. Dust had accumulated on the surface of the chest. I touched the top. I immediately pulled my hand back. It had shocked me. I touched it again hesitantly, shivers ran down my spine but that was it. I glided my fingers along the sides, bringing them to the handles.
I lifted the lid, dust spilling out, causing me to sneeze. I looked back inside. There was an envelope, a staff of some sort, and a sheath to a sword. Confused, I picked up the envelope. Inside were the words of my Grandfather. I could almost hear is accent through the ink on the page.
Dear Adrian,
If you are reading this, then I’m dead. The reaper has finally reached me. I bet they told you I died in a car accident, an unstable statue in a museum. They think they’re so clever, huh? Well I’m almost positive they lied. Over the course of my life I’ve been on the run from an organization of creatures called Eglums. They are horrid monsters created centuries ago. I don’t have enough time to explain this all, so please follow these instructions. Keep the sword sheath and the staff in sight at ALL TIMES! And make sure to keep this letter, there’s a very important map on the back. If you lose it or the staff, death is imminent. Now I’ve marked a trail in red. Once you get there, there is a house, I need you to speak these exacts words to the person you meet “Islum afrent Ico.” They’ll know what to do then. Just trust me.
With love,
Grandpa Acro
Great, my Grandfather’s last words to me are after he went over the bend. Next thing you know he’ll be calling me for tea time and wishing me a very happy unbirthday. I sighed, climbed down the latter and made my way to my room. All that for nothing. I really hope there’s still something that he left me of actual sentimental value in there somewhere. Maybe even some money. Grandpa was a pretty wealthy person. When he wasn’t retired, he owned a business that made and transported various goods (food, toys, clothes, etc. etc.) and he got quite the profit.
I collapsed in bed and turned off the lamp non my nightstand. I sighed and rolled over. Tomorrow I’ll make my way to his house. His butler got ownership of it in the inheritance, and decided to leave it untouched. There might be something left there.
I closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep.
