The Start
Eliza Lawson awoke to her brother screaming, she jumped up, running out of her room barefoot, she stopped short, seeing something eating him, she turned ran back to her room, quickly getting dressed, putting on sneakers, she grabbed her gun that she kept in her nightstand, hearing the screams broke her heart, it tore her focus, she didn’t know what was going on, but she was going to find out. Eliza opened her bedroom door, dressed in jeans, sneakers, a tank top and a hoodie, she watches her brother fall to the ground, then whatever was eating him started coming towards her, she looked around, her father yelling from downstairs,
“ELIZA!!!!”
She froze for a moment, whatever it was coming towards her still, she stared at it, her father’s voice drowning out as she backed away from the flesh eating monster in front of her. She held up her gun, fired off a shot into its chest, it didn’t go down, she started to panic, she fired another shot into its chest, still nothing, she fired one more shot, this time to its head, it dropped quickly, dead. She heard her mother’s screams from her parents room, Eliza turned just as her dad was running upstairs, he ran by her, bite marks all over his arm, she ran after him, stopping as her mother is being eaten by whatever they were, her father got caught by another, the 3rd one came for Eliza, she killed it, then tried to help her parents, her brother dead in the hallway behind her.
Her brother began to move as she turned to look at him, she bent down to look at him closer, tears falling, he tried to reach for her, as one of those things, she cried harder as she put the gun to his head, pulling the trigger, blood splattering all over her, she got up, and ran downstairs. She grabbed her brother’s truck keys, ran towards the garage, unlocking the truck, she ran back upstairs, quickly packed what she could into two bags, then packed some food from the kitchen, loaded up the truck with the bags, pillows, blankets and food. She started the truck, opening the garage door; she waited until it was fully open before driving out of it. Her mouth dropped at the complete chaos in her neighborhood, she watched her neighbors running from the undead, and she wiped tears as she drove away from the neighborhood.
She tried to figure out where to go, she flipped through the stations, listening to the warning to stay locked indoors, she sighed as she drove, she found an abandoned house about an hour later, she parked the truck in the garage closing the door, she got out of the truck, grabbing her stuff that she needed at that moment, she went into the house, looked in every room, shut all doors and windows locking them up, she ate something, then set up in the living room, she heard screaming all day into the night unable to sleep. She cried a bit, and then pulled herself together, she fell asleep at some point, she spent most of the days in the abandoned house, it was approaching 2 weeks since this chaos started, she decided she needed to move sites; she packed up and left in the truck.
She drove around, trying to find a new place, once she did, she parked, got out and then set out to try to find food, keeping her eyes out for the undead, she found an abandoned store, she pulled her knife, keeping her gun away, she noticed that gun shots attracted more, she looked around, then she spotted a guy, she wasn’t sure if he was alive or dead. She was afraid she hadn’t seen another human in a long time. She carefully approached,
“Hello?” She said her voice breaking a bit. The guy slowly turned, with his gun ready to shoot. He stared right into her eyes, trying to figure out if she was safe or not. “Hey! Drop the gun, I’m a living person” she said with a slight speak of her voice making him lowing his armed weapon slowly. The guy stayed silent, still staring into her eyes– as if he was examining her for something before finally speaking up. “Sorry, you just got to be prepared for things. I haven’t seen a living human in two weeks”
“Same, its hard times now... you got to do anything just to live” her voice croaked softly as she looked down, away from the guy– feeling a uncomfortable from his piercing eyes. “Right...” An awkward silence fell after he said that. The guy finally cleared his throat, grabbing her attention. “Well let’s not stand here trying to get ate” he joked softly making her roll her eyes but silently shutter at the dark humor. “Yeah let’s go” the two quickly took their leave. They silently walked along the eerily calm and silent street.
She looked over at a different path, hearing a quiet moaning sound before grabbing her knifes that was latched onto her pants. “Do you hear that?” She asked the guy, slowing down to look. “Hear what?” He asked looking over at the dark pathway. “That moaning sound... Something’s over there” she said in almost a whisper. As on queue, a lifeless creature started limping out of the dark path. It let out a loud growl, before taking off towards the two.
She quickly grabbed her knife, and fought off the lifeless walking corpse. Taking her knife, she had stabbed into in its head– making it groan one last time and fall to the already bloody ground. She clutched her chest, feeling her heart pounding harshly. Her breath switched into a shaky pattern, see the fact she almost didn’t make it. “Thank you for your help!” She yelled over at the guy with a tremble in her voice. “You’re the crazy one who fought it with a knife! I really couldn’t help without shooting you!” He argued before sighing heavily. “Are you ok though? Did it bite you?” He asked in somewhat of a sounding concern tone. “I’m fine, thanks” she said walking off leaving him behind.
“Hey wait up!” He yelled running up to her side. “Are you mad at me?” He asked raiding a brow. “No, just tired” she answered glancing over at him. “Why are you sticking with me though?” She asked curiously, “you really don’t have to” she said with a small smile. “Because I want to. Nothing more to it” he answered with a shrug. “Then can I have your name? Since we’ll be together, I can’t just be calling you the guy with a gun” she joked lightly making him chuckle. “Its Felix and you are?” He asked while answering at the same time.
“Eliza”
She looked over at him, “Where are you from? I’m from a few city over’s from here.”
She was slightly curious, trying to make small talk, despite how tired she was, she had a hard time sleeping since this started, she kept seeing her family being murdered over and over, she couldn’t do anything to save them, she walked getting lost in her thoughts as she walked towards the abandoned house she was calling home for the time being.
“I’m from a small town a few miles away from here” he simply answered glancing around the semi dark street. “But that place doesn’t matter anymore, it’s taken over by those creatures” he said with almost a bitter tone lingering in his voice.
She nodded, “Yeah there over taking everything.”
She walked into the abandoned house she had boarded up,
“This is where I am hiding now, I change places often, and I don’t trust the undead.”
She sighed getting lost in her thoughts as they walked inside, she closed the door behind them, locking it up,
“There are plenty of blankets and pillows, make yourself at home.” She says as she walks off and upstairs.
He made his way over to a corner, dropping down his gun and sitting down while leaning his head back against the wall, trying to get comfortable. He shifted down onto his left side, closing his eyes and finally getting some rest after days of nonstop fighting.
His breathing slowed down as he started to nod off from completely relaxing and letting down his guard.
He had tried to fight off the suddenly new feeling of exhaustion that overcame his body. He struggled to keep his eyes opened and yawned lightly. He was refusing to sleep just in case something happens.
Eliza changed out of her blood soaked clothes into something else, she yawned, looking around, she had trouble falling asleep, she sat in the window seat of one of the bedrooms, looking through the boarded up windows, at some point she fell asleep there her head resting against the window.
Felix eventually dozed off, falling into a light sleep. He had given up on trying to fight off the heavy weight of his tiredness but instead just rest. Since he’ll be much better and coherent if he is needed for any type of situation.
