The Call Of Doom.
The godly demise of the planet was before my eyes. The bright fluids erupting out of the cracks, the blue liquids in the seas disappearing as if they were never there, the earth was shattering like glass and the world was falling apart. Why was this happening? Why was I here to witness this? My eyes burned, not because of the dazzlingly bright light from the explosions, but because of the overwhelming fear in my heart.
I heard a deafening sound, which stopped me for the time being from bursting into tears, a sound that seemed impossible to still exist, a loud buzzing sound. It kept on buzzing and hurting my ears.
I then heard the voice of a person, how was this possible?
’Wake up!’ the voice, like a shout coming from far away, commanded.
’Wake up!’ it said, yet again, seemingly coming closer.
I closed my eyes and put my hands over my ears hoping it would go away, but it just wouldn’t budge.
I fell on the floor with a huge crash, I opened my eyes and I was in my room. The alarm clock was buzzing like crazy.
‘Just a dream.’ I told myself and let out a sigh of relief.
I got up to find myself covered with sweat, tears were streaming down from my eyes and my heart was beating like an engine. I saw my sister with a frown standing beside my door and quickly rubbed off my tears.
‘You’re late for school again! I told you not to watch those stupid movies before going to sleep late at night.’ She said, apparently waiting for some sign of apology from me.
’Sorry, Queen Doris of Annoytopia.’ I sighed.
She was right though, I needed to fix my sleep schedule, my grades were already suffering, and if I kept this up, I would surely be kicked out of school before even finishing the 9th grade.
I quickly put on whatever T Shirt I could find in the closet and wore my favorite pair of jeans hanging on the door knob and ran downstairs to get breakfast. Doris had finished cereal and was running towards the bus, the bus drove away without me. I sat down and grabbed a bowl sleepily, I was already dreading riding my bicycle to school in this tired state.
Finishing breakfast, I sat on my bicycle and rushed towards school. I was almost halfway there when I looked down at my watch. Only 7 minutes remaining and I would get detention.
I peddled faster and faster until I eventually lost control, crashed my bicycle on a nearby fence and flew over the fence with a loud thump. I got up to find my jeans dirty, blood prickling down my face and I was already late for school.
‘COULD THIS DAY GET ANY WORSE?!’ my voice cracked as I shouted.
Apparently, it could, because just a few moments later a dog came towards me from the neighbors lawn and ran at me. I got up and started running as fast as I could, my first thought was to go back to my home, explain to Mom what had happened and just bunk school but then I realized that I was now even farther from home than I was from school.
I decided on a whim to start running straight to my school, explain what had just happened to the principal and make her call my Mom. I ran and ran and ran. My lungs were burning from the insides but there was nothing I could do to calm them.
I reached the school and slipped on the floor with a loud crash and prayed that the dog wasn’t behind me. Luckily, the dog had given up chasing me a few yards back. Teachers ran outside their classes and saw me on the floor, panting and bleeding and covered in mud. I tried to keep my eyes open but I had lost too much blood to do so. The last thing I saw before eventually passing out was the horror struck faces of my classmates and… Judy.
I was sitting in a dark and empty room. I tried to move my arms and legs but they seemed to be glued on to something. I tried calling out for help but my lips wouldn’t budge. The sound of a loud cackle echoed. I looked around and saw a small ball of light far away, it got closer and closer every breath I took. It was only a few meters away from me when I saw the outline of a person holding the small light ball. The light seemed to be erupting from the persons’ hands. The person crept even closer and came to a sudden halt in front of me. Now I could see the person clearly, it was a woman. A woman dressed in an odd shade of blue, one of her eyes seemed to be lifeless, dangling as she moved a bit closer, like a ball stuffed in her eye sockets. Her face was lopsided.
’Sa Mem Zo, Sa Mem Zo, Sa Mem Zo’ She kept chanting mercilessly as she bowed her back.
She came close to my ears and whispered:
’SAY GOODBYE!’
She stuck a large dagger in my chest and I woke up with a scream.
I was in the hospital room covered with bandages and whatnot. I could still feel the sharpness of the dagger in my chest, her voice vibrated in my ears, it felt too real to be a dream!
The school nurse came rushing into my aid and started firing me with questions. I, of course, lied to avoid further embarrassment and made up a story which involved a dog, a motorbike and a scary dude with a really long beard. The nurse seemed to believe me somehow and I felt really proud of myself for coming up with that one.
After a few more questions regarding past medications, she got up and came close to me. I expected her to inject me with a needle or give me some medications or something along those lines and so I closed my eyes and prepared for the sting but instead she came close to my ears and said, in a very familiar voice:
’SAY GOODBYE!’
I got up with a jerk, a few of my bandages tore apart and the wires connecting to the ventilator were disconnected.
I ran like I had never run before, I slipped again in the corridors but this time I got up quickly. What the hell just happened? This had to be a joke. No way was I going to accept that what I saw was real. It was just my mind playing jokes on me, right?
I bumped hard into the main entrance doors, they were locked. I felt blood spurt from my mouth and a one tooth got knocked out. I groaned in pain and looked behind me. The nurse was running towards me, transforming, her body features were changing; her eyes were moving apart, her hair shrank and her nose was being pushed back into her face. It was an awful sight but this was no time to be thinking how ugly she was becoming, she had a bloody knife.
I started shouting for help and entered a classroom, hoping to find someone help but found it empty. I ran to another classroom and it too was empty. I glanced at my watch and it was 10 in the night, there was no one here to help me!
I looked behind me and sure enough, the nurse, now fully transformed into the horrific sight in my nightmares, was limping behind me, walking slowly and eerily.
I ran to the corridor on the right and hid in a classroom on my immediate left. I quickly hid under the teacher’s desk and covered my face in my hands, not daring to breathe. I heard loud, limping footsteps from the outside and, though I hadn’t noticed it before, she was groaning.
I wanted this to end, I wanted someone to take me home. I couldn’t live like this even if I somehow did manage to escape.
Suddenly, a girl’s voice shouted from in front of the main entrance.
‘Mike!’ she shouted. It was my sister, Doris, she must’ve come looking for me here!
'I'm over here!' my voice echoed, but I hadn't said a word.
’Mike? Are you okay? Mike!' she screamed loudly and started dashing towards the witch.
I heard loud thuds heading to the nurse witch’s direction. I slowly crawled in front of the door to see through the small hole in the door. The nurse witch was grinning creepily, hiding behind the wall, her knife tightly grasped around her hands.
This was all happening too fast, there was no way I could stop her now. Doris was going to die because of me. I started racking my brain for any ideas, any ideas at all, but my mind was completely blank.
Doris slipped and crashed on the wall at the sight of the witch as she turned right. The witch started running as fast as she could to Doris. Doris quickly got up, unbalanced because of the shock and tried to run for the exit. The witch ran the dagger through Doris’ chest, and she propelled her back into the wall again.
Fear and anger was overwhelming in my heart. My eyes felt like they were about to pop out. Why wasn’t I doing anything? Why was I watching my own sister suffer because she was trying to find me? Why couldn’t I move?
I watched as the witch drew closer to my sister. Tears of guilt were dripping down from my eyes. What was she going to do to her now? She grabbed Doris’ body from the floor and… and … began eating it. She tore apart Doris’ limbs and began swallowing them, blood dripping from her lips.
Suddenly the floor started shaking. It was too sudden to realize what was going on. The building began to crack and the windows started to shatter.
The roof cracked and fell on top of the witch who was busy, I swallowed, eating. The witch shouted a cry and was squished along with Doris’ half-eaten body.
A ghostly dragon-like loud roar erupted, not from the witch, but from the outside.
’The Call of Doom’ a voice said in my heart.
