Summary

"How do you become you when you've spent your whole life being a few words on a piece of paper? Who does that make you once you're free? I don't know much about me, but I know that I can't save you." Shade White had always been defined by a couple of words. They varied, depending on the speaker and situation, but it was always just a few words that weren't him. Faggot. Flight risk. Criminal. Unreachable. Not worth it. Always not worth it. So how is Shade supposed to save an entire race of people who don't define him in any other way other than a hero? Shade knows he's not a hero. Not even close. No, he'd rather be a faggot than a hero. At least he knows that being a faggot entails kissing boys. He can do that. How do you be a hero? He doesn't know how to do that. And then there's Cassius Kynt. A spoiled, rich prince who's never actually been hurt in his life. Actual, loving parents, good school, good friends, good life. He's never lost anyone. Until the attack on Jejambi. How do you piece yourself back together? Cassius Kynt doesn't know. Two boys piecing themselves together. What could go wrong?

ONE - HIM

"Are you sure about this?" A golden-haired boy asked anxiously, looking around at the metal fences and bars. The dirty white walls shining through the holes in the metal made his nose curl in disgust, and he fidgeted in his baggy sweatshirt and joggers. "These human clothes are so itchy," He grumbled, momentarily distracted.

"Cassius, suck it up," The black-haired girl hissed at him, wearing something similar. "She could be the one!"

"And if she isn't? What do we do then?" Cassius retorted angrily, his voice still hushed.

"Then we keep looking. But she's the one, Cassius. I know it. I can feel it." The black-haired boy spoke up, glancing at the entrance.

"Just like you felt that the ogres weren't dangerous?" Cassius snapped, angelic face twisted in a sneer. Without saying a word, the black-haired boy walked away, pushing the door to the dirty place open.

"Nice job, culus. You know that wasn't his fault, that he wasn't even close to Jejambi. Just keep your mouth shut and try not to mess this up anymore, alright?" The black-haired girl hissed, shoving past him and entering juvie.

". . . doesn't want to see you, I'm sorry." The woman at the front desk told the black-haired boy. Said boy glanced back, asking with his eyes for her help.

She sighed, staring the woman in the eyes and telling her, "You will let him pass. She will see him and then we will leave and all you will forget you saw us entirely."

"Yes, of course." The woman nodded, buzzing them in. The door opened and the black-haired boy stopped the girl from going in.

"No, Kaia. Just me." He told her, and she stepped back, nodding.

"Well, go in then." Kaia urged him.

A guard on the other side of the door asked for his name, wrote it on a pass, and then stuck it on his chest before walking him down a hallway and opening the door. Half a dozen people sat around at the tables, some with briefcases and grim expressions and some with disappointed expressions and no fancy clothes. He sat down at a table and stared at his hands, brown eyes intense as he looked. Chains rattled and a body sat across from him, making his head snap up.

"What do you want?" The boy sitting across from him asked, white hair falling across his forehead. The black-haired boy sighed, crossing the lead off the list. This boy fit the description except for the fact that he was a man. Seer Andreas said it would be a girl.

"I thought I knew you." The black-haired boy offered by way of explanation.

"Well, you don't. Go away." The boy told him, voice flat.

The white-haired boy started to get up, but chains rattled as he went to scratch his neck and the black-haired boy caught sight of a mark curled around his collar bone.

"Oh my gods, you're her! Him, her, whatever." The black-haired boy exclaimed, eyes wide.

"I don't know what you're talking about. Guard!" He shouted, getting their attention.

"Yes you do. You're an elf, aren't you?" The black-haired boy whispered, and the white-haired boy lunged, gripping the other boy's collar despite being shorter.

"I am a juvenile delinquent, a human juvenile delinquent. Leave. Me. Alone." The white-haired boy growled in the other boy's ear before being pulled away by the shouting guards. Dazed, the black-haired boy walked out of the room and back through the hallway, where Kaia was waiting for him.

"Well?" She asked hopefully.

"It's not a her, it's a him. We found him."
