Chapter 1 - What day is today?

Jacob opened his eyes in his cozy little bed. The sun was already peering through the windows into his room. Jacob ran to the brightly shining window. He looked out into the street with sleepy eyes and found that even Peach was still asleep.

When will he wake up? thought Jacob.

Who is Peach? Oh, that was Jacob’s best friend. More precisely, he was his dog. They spent days together playing various games that were known all over the whole world.

Jacob loved his furry friend very much, and he didn’t like to lose him, which happened quite often. Each time, Peach turned out to be faster and more agile than Jacob, as if forcing his owner to become stronger.

Jacob looked at sleeping Peach and smiled. He remembered that their first meeting was exactly three years ago. On that day, Mom and Dad gave Jacob a little doggie as a present. I don’t even know what breed it was, but it had a long, elongated body, large drooping ears, a small protruding tail and thick black-brown hair. In the light, the hair looked almost like an orange color, that’s how he got this name Peach. Peaches are orange, aren`t they?

Jacob turned around. A small calendar hanging on the far wall reported – July 7th. And that was not an ordinary day. On July 7th was his birthday and that meant he was 9 years old that day. Although he felt much older.

Gotta get ready. Jacob suddenly came to his senses and ran to look for his holiday outfit.

His holiday outfit was a white shirt with a red bow and black pants. That’s exactly how Jacob always wanted to look on his birthday—mature.

Tying a bowtie and looking at his reflection in the mirror, Jacob thought:

Today I became older.

Indeed, he looked more mature than a year ago and especially than two years ago. But today there still was a short redhaired boy in the reflection. Barely visible freckles ran across his face, he had bright blue eyes, and slightly protruding ears. He had a funny childish smile, but with a serious look.

Jacob looked at the mirror, examining himself, and then the small room turned upside down. He looked at the bookcase through the mirror, at the toys and the soccer ball, and then his gaze smoothly shifted to the wooden bedside table behind him. There was a small white photo frame on it, which contained a beautiful photo of his parents taken 10 years ago. It was written in large letters on the photo: Steven Scott and Abby Scott.

Jacob walked over to the photo and smiled. His parents seemed much more different to him. They were more funny and cheerful. His dad was tall, with strong powerful shoulders, and Mom was short, with beautiful green eyes and a round face.

We must hurry! Jacob suddenly came to his senses. This day, he wanted to feel a little more grown up. Or maybe become more mature? He wanted to wake Mom and Dad first, and not vice versa, as it always happened.

Jacob walked to the door, put his hand on the handle and froze. He thought a little about something very pleasant and exciting at the same time.
