Prologue

“It doesn’t have that great pull for readers to continue after the first chapter, Ms. Miller”

She puts down the thick manuscript on the table. Two to four pages were turned and the rest of the thick leaves clamped together were left untouched.

Here I am for the 4th time in a day, meeting up with an editor from a publishing house.

Thinking, maybe I’d get lucky this time.

Not.

“Uh... I-I actually have a couple more manuscripts here. Please take a look at them.”

The editor sighs, “The one you made me read just now. It’s your best one, isn’t it?”

Wendy stays silent as it hit right on the nail.

The editor continues, “If that wasn’t enough to satisfy me, how much more of those you think will?”

She crosses her arms and gives Wendy a sharp look. “In a nutcrack, it was boring.”

Her bluntness takes Wendy by surprise and she could only purse her lips, eventually straying her eyes down.

The female editor picks up her leather black shoulder bag. “If you will excuse me, I have other appointments to attend to.”

“Yes... Thank you so much for sparing the time.” Wendy meekly says.

Once the editor left the café, Wendy gave an irritated glare as her eyes followed the pompous woman walking away.

And it’s nutshell. Meanie.

Wendy slumps down her seat, giving a long exasperated sigh. “She didn’t need to be so rude about it.”

She plants her palms on her face and rubs, then immediately patted her cheeks. Focus Wendy, we just need to get better and let imaginations run wild.

That’s what grandma always says.

“...Who are you?” Wendy slowly asks while relieving her throbbing head.

“No! Who are you?! Y-You just appeared, like out of freaking nowhere!” The guy in front of me exclaims. A clear expression of shock on his face.

Then, like a sudden ping, Wendy remembers.

“M-May I ask your name?”

The man looks at her, skeptical. But answers her question.

“Maverick Wills...”

Wendy pales. It’s the same as the protagonist from grandma’s last book.

A struggling 22-year old writer who is in dire need of ideas, unexpectedly finds it somewhere...

With the help of her grandmother’s last book.
