Summary

Ever since the vampires came out to the world, things have been hectic. Pretty much utter chaos has broken out between countries and especially between the different species. You see, not only did the vampire species make itself known to the humans, but so did the werewolves and the fae. So far, they are the only three species in the public eye, but the humans have been told there are others who wish to remain hidden.

Prologue

After the War of the Species ended about 89 years ago, the country got split up into Areas. Major cities turned into an Area, with thousands to millions of humans flocking to them for safety against the vampires. The cities became sanctuaries because the more humans that were together, the better chance they had at surviving.

When the vampires first came out to the world, their numbers were very small. But after the War it seemed their numbers have been steadily rising. It doesn’t take much for a vampire to turn a human, but a lot of Areas have treaties with their vampire population that forbids them to turn humans. Area 16, the Area I live in, the humans have a peaceful negotiation with the vampires.

Every human is required to donate blood once a month and in return our vampire leader of Area 16, Lord Milos, makes sure his kind don’t terrorize the community. But the treaties don’t stop the unruly ones from wreaking havoc. There will always be the vampires who don’t care about the rules. Which is why the fae have been an ally to the humans since the two species have come out to the world.

They helped us fight in the War, even trained our soldiers how to fight against vampires, teaching us what their weak spots are. The fae have been helping protect our kind since the beginning and they still continue to do so today.

Most humans nowadays never see a fae around, and they think they’ve given up on helping us. But you know what I think? Just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there, watching over us. The worse Areas have been left behind though. The humans there had a choice a long time ago to move to a more protected Area or stay and watch it get taken over by blood-thirsty vamps.

So far, only the fae have stood up for mankind and the after-effects over the years have been humans calling them saints, heroes, gods, you name it. Little boys listen to their grandparents tell stories of what it was like to see a real fae in action. Only the elderly who were alive 60 or so years ago and still alive today actually saw the fae in person.

I’ve seen pictures, but I’ve yet to meet one. Their weapons that they crafted themselves and used in the War, now sit in a museum downtown. Everything about the fae can now be read in books and they have become legends in human history. The governor of Area 16 says the fae still protect us, but choose to remain out of sight to the humans.

He thinks that by them doing this, it gives them an advantage over the vampires. What sort of advantage, I have no idea. My father says it’s because we all have stopped believing they’re around so that also convinces the vampires they’re not around. The Committee is made up of five elected humans that have meetings to talk about the happenings within the Area. Each major protected Area has their own Committee, and each Committee also had a fae leader that would meet as well.

The fae leaders stopped meeting when it seemed the humans were making peace treaties with the vampires and no longer needed their protection. Every now and then though, people hear whispers on the wind of someone seeing a fae watching over them, like some sort of guardian angel.
