Prologue
At a newspaper company from the city of Bucharest, the so-called astrologist that worked with the most read paper in the country, was about to write another day of astrology for an entire city, perhaps, if she was so famous, she did write for a whole nation, prescribing everyone’s daily medication.
She came the next day with the horoscope that she meditated on the night before, and showed it to the director of the newspaper company. He started to read aloud his astrological sign.
“Sagittarius: you will have a long day with few expectations from your employees. The day will prove to be very interesting, and you will meet an important person in your life. Love is up. Health is up. Money is up. Well, this is perfect. But you know what I don’t understand?” He said quite upset.
“What is it?”
“How come I have the perfect horoscope every day and the others don’t?”
“Huh…” she stared at him and at the paper, he had in his hands and finally said a word. “Sagittarius!”
“Yes, my sign is full of good stuff. You are not making this up, aren’t you?”
“No! It’s just that it is a good year for this sign. I talk to the stars, and now on the sky, on this period of the year, the Sagittarius constellation takes place with Venus around, in the 4th part of the day. It’s a logical explanation. You are the lucky ones, for now!” She gave him a fake smile.
“Ah fine. This time I didn’t catch you tripping but take a day off, and I would like to see a good horoscope on Friday, is that clear? I don’t know how will you make it, but do it.”
“But I worked one day… and…” By the time she could say something else, he was already gone. “Damn stars! I have to come with a better idea, or I’ll lose my reputation. Hmmm…”
Was she truly inventing all of those words or she really did have a gift?
She was resting on the armchair on the porch of her house, looking at the cloudy sky, searching for one or two stars above in order to be able to write something. Then she took out her phone, entered the stars application and pointed it at the sky.
“I don’t need a clear sky, I can look at this app and make the future come true as well.”
Her methods were unknown to the others, but they work every time! and the people of the capital were pleased with the results from her readings. She was much of a loner, didn’t need anyone else to disturb her silence. Pleased with a normal salary and one book already published which sold almost 1 million copies, therefore she had everything she needed. Money was not an issue, though she didn’t like spending too much on unnecessary things or matters. She was not a technology freak like the rest of the people. She had a phone and a rusty laptop that did the job when she was writing her stories and googled for information.
No matter how hard she tried to come up with a story for the Friday’s horoscope, she had no intuition, no stars, no mood for work or any kind of these things, the app was having some problems displaying the right direction. She was way out of tune and it was because of her Taurus sign. Or so she thought.
An unknown number was calling her.
“Hello?” She said surprised.
“Tara?” The voice on the other side was unconvinced.
“Who’s this?”
“Is this Tara I am speaking with?”
“Yes! Who am I talking to?” She demanded already annoyed.
“I am so glad to hear your voice, Tara! It’s me, Matthew!”
“Huh, Matthew… Doesn’t sound familiar. What’s your last name?”
“Mitchell, Matt, Matty? Remember? High school classmates? I guess you don’t remember a geek like me.” He chuckled.
“Oh, Matt the bat boy? You were always giving the other guys the bat for the baseball games. And you also helped everyone with the math homework. I remember! It’s been such a long time since then. So, what’s up?”
“Yes, yes, that was me. Well… Tara, actually, can we meet? It’s not safe for me to talk on the phone.”
“What do you ever mean? Are you ok?” She said alarmed.
“It’s about my mom… are you free tonight? I’ll come to pick you up!”
“Well, I don’t have anything in schedule…”
“That is great!”
“Wait, Matt? Matthew? Did you just hang up on me? What the hell?” She looked at her phone and tried to phone him back, but before she pushed the dial button, a car stopped in front of her house. The small wooden fence didn’t cover the face of the man who just got off of the car. It was a tall man dressed in a dark brown leather jacket combined with jeans and snickers. His dark brown hair was swept back, but it still looked a bit ravished on the sides. He waved at her, lowering his head ashamed.
She left the phone on the porch and went to him and opened the small door, looking amazed into his light blue eyes.
“Hey! So, I guess you still live in the same place.”
“Matthew? How and what?” She seemed confused.
“Can I… come in?” He pointed at the house.
“Oh, sure let’s go inside. But how did you know I lived here?” She was positive she never gave her address to him.
