Chapter 1
Scrolling my insta feed, I let out a sigh hearing Amma call out to me,
“Riya, get your lazy self off the sofa and start getting ready. We have to be there in 2 hours and for God’s sake put that phone of yours aside”
I rolled my eyes as soon as Amma turned her back to me. Every one has got a problem with my phone. I finally get a break from medical school and all I want is to laze around but here is Amma taking me to a wedding of someone who I don’t even know.
I turn to see Nanna trying to suppress his smile but the twitch of lips gave him away.
“This isn’t funny Nanna” I said glaring playfully at him.
“Oh Kanna! It is!” he said letting out a booming laughter.
“No it isn’t. By the way whose wedding are we going to attend?”
“You really don’t know?!” he asked with a exasperated look marring his face.
I shook my head in NO with a sheepish smile.
“Aakash is the son my best friend Naren and he is one getting married. You even went to same school. He was 3 years senior to you.“he said shaking his head.
“Oh” I said not knowing what to say.
Now that Nanna says it I kind of remember him when his family came to our home a few times.
He was that tall , lanky boy who towered me like a freaking giant. He always liked to discuss politics and business with Nanna and hid Dad. I was let to suffer my boredom as Amma and Aunty liked to gossip around. Those were horrible times. I know that today is going to be one of those times.
I wonder why he is getting married at only 23. He has different priorities I guess and I have no right to criticize him.
I personally can’t see myself married until I’m 25 or 26. I still have a lot to do, dreams to chase and moments to cherish with my family.
I hear Amma on phone with Sravanthi Aunty. I must get ready before my mother has my head for making us late. I went to my room and was shocked to witness utter chaos there.
I looked around the room and found my sister in corner trying hard not to weep. Her make up tutorial must have been a disaster again. I don’t know how I managed to not laugh out aloud, but right now my little sister needs me.
" Chinnu! Emaindi kanna?”I asked her as if I already didn’t know the root of all the chaos.(Chinnu! What happened dear?)
She looked at me and let out a sigh of relief.
“Akka! My make up is a disaster again. What will I do now?”
“Honestly Chinnu, I told you that you are too young to follow those complicated tutorials yet you do it again. Here , take these make up wipes and clean yourself first”, I said giving her my wipes.
She is really is too young at 14 but she always tries to imitate my every move. I guess all younger sisters are like that, like idiots but she is my idiot and only I can tease her.
She cleaned her face and I stared to work my magic on her. I kept her make up minimal the way I like. I remember one time I caked my face with layers of make up and I didn’t look like myself anymore. It was then that I decided that many layers of make up was a big NO.
After getting done with her, I took out my new blue lehenga with gold border. It wasn’t grand but it was easy to carry.
After an hour or so I was finally ready, I looked really nice if I say myself. As they say less is more.
I came down to hall to see Amma all ready to go in her Kanchi pattu saree and Nanna in his pancha.
Nanna was saying something in Amma’s ear and she was giggling like a school girl.
As heart warming as the sight was , no child would like to be a spectator of their parents’ romance.
I made a sound to signal them of my arrival and acted like I didn’t see anything.
“You look so beautiful kanna” Nanna said pulling me into his arms.
" You always praise Akka. You didn’t even comment on how I look” I looked back and saw Chinnu standing there with a pout.
Nanna laughed and pulled her too
“You look so cute Chinnu just like a doll”, he said.
It was such a Awwwww moment, but everything has to come to an end.
“Okay I hate to this but we have to get going if we don’t wish to be late” Amma said breaking our moment.
I took the car keys and every one buckled themselves. Nanna lets me drive because he knows I’m very good at it, far beter than him even and it is safe to say that he is a proud father.
We reached the venue with twenty minutes. I looked at the welcome board which read Aakash weds Harini .
I finally know the name of bride. It seems so unreal that I don’t know even I tiny detail of the wedding in which my parents were so involved. I guess that is the way I am.
I see my parents rushing to help their friends in supervising the arrangements.
Chinnu runs off to her friends. That girls has friends every where. With Chinnu running off to her friends my last thread of hope to survive boredom breaks.
I looked at the place which is going to kill me with boredom . Hmm let the music begin!
