Prologue

There was something funny in the air that day. Like a tension that kept growing; a warning that envisioned a grotesque event emerging. Perhaps it was that the twins had woken up with the idea that they had lost loved ones. Neither could remember who though, but both had felt an ache to rewind time. For both of them had felt sad waking up because they could not go back. They felt they had lost someone and they couldn’t get them back.

Perhaps it was because two brothers had been sent out by their father with the threat of their mother's live if they didn’t follow orders.

Or perhaps it was because a prince had bid farewell to his princess because she wanted to visit her family. He had wanted to join her but was to busy and already missed her. The princess had insisted on travelling alone and leave the guards to their duty at the palace for she would be safe.

Perhaps it was because that very same prince would receive word from his soulmate’s brother about a heartbreaking plan.

Perhaps it was because a son had found out that the Dark King had ordered something horrific and had been riding for two days straight in hopes to reach his family in time.

But everyone seemed oblivious to this as the princess, Adelina, reached her family that evening. She was now playing with her two younger sisters, the twins: Brileigh and Kymme, while their parents watched them. The twins were 10 years old now, it was their birthday after all.

The two girls looked up to their older sister; everyone did. The princess, soulmate of the crown prince, heir to the throne of Light. Adelina was fair and loved for her pureness and noble, kind heart. A regal beauty fit for a king with her fair skin, silver eyes and golden locks and plump rosy lips. Her blood, like her eyes, was silver, a clear sign that she had chosen to serve the Light. Her soulmate, prince Absalon, had found her at the same age as the twins now were. She was everything to him.

Everyone had a soulmate, although the Dark ones had a twisted kind of love. The males could hear their soulmates thoughts when they both reached the age of ten. Females could not, but had the task of protecting them. If one touched a girl and he was not her soulmate, the bond would be dimmed and the male would not be able to hear her thoughts. A radio silence. This entailed that girls avoid physical contact with most males and sometimes even with their own soulmates. For no one could have a soulmate that belonged to the other kingdom. There was not one couple that could stay together when one had silver blood and the other's blood as black and thick as tar. There was no couple that could stay together when one followed the laws and morals of the Light and the other of the Dark.

The twins were giggling and squealing as they stormed through the garden, chased by their laughing older sister. Both girls would turn out to be as fair as their sister, a blind man could see that. They had the exact same silver eyes, although their blood was still transparent. They had not yet chosen a side, but both knew that if their blood would turn into black tar the consequences would be grave. They would never see their family again. Brileigh had almost the same golden locks as Adelina and Kymme, like their brother, had dark chocolate coloured hair.

While everyone was preparing to go to bed in the house now as the night was fast approaching, their brother and the prince and his guards were approaching the house in a frenzy. Not so long ago a messenger had delivered a note to the prince. A warning. A plea to help Eamon as he was trying to save his family. As he was trying to safe Adelina. His grey horse was storming through the dark night. Sweat covered its body as the magnificent strong animal strained its muscles to fulfil its master’s wishes. Its hooves thundered against the ground. Farther away the guards and prince’s horses did the same, but they were all still at a hopeless distance from the home.

Two black horses had come to a halt next to the house. Two sons jumped off and landed with grace, silent as the night. They were here to save their mother, they were here for Adelina and they were in for the surprise of their lives.

The two brothers had heard their soulmate’s thoughts for the first time tonight. It was comforting, that they could listen to their dreams as they did this. When they entered the building they left Adelina’s parents for dead. Both were downstairs talking quietly over a muck of tea. Adelina, who had walked into the living room to bid them goodnight, screamed at the horrific sight. Upstairs the twin sisters had woken up from their slumber and started to creep down the stairs.
