I wandered on the shore of the beach like I always do when my brain is a mush of thoughts. The water calls to me the same way as the moon. Being an alpha is a very difficult job indeed. But when you are continuously opposed by your pack members just because you are a girl and a crossbreed, life becomes a hell lot complicated.
“Cam! What are you doing here when you are supposed to be in the meeting?” shouts a familiar voice from the other end of the shoreline. She doesn’t have to shout. My werewolf hearing makes it easier to listen to the voices and being the alpha gives an added advantage. But being a human, Leah has to shout. “You know, you don’t have to shout Leah! Anyways what are you doing here?” I shout back.
“Answer mine first. What are you doing here instead of attending the meeting?”
“Well, I have no patience to meet the disappointed stares of the committee and the elders. So Max is doing me a favour of attending them on my behalf.” I replied looking everywhere but at her.
“Oh, Cam! You are the alpha. Not Max. Why do you not attend the meeting when all you want is their approval?” she asks with a pity expression I am starting to hate. Without my knowledge, my wolf bares her teeth and releases a low growl meant to threaten. Leah jumps back and her cool expression turns into the one horrified. I recognize my mistake immediately.“I am so sorry Leah. I don’t know why my wolf is on the edge these days. It feels something but I can’t place a finger on it.”
“I know what happened yet I could not control my wolf. I am so sorry.” I say and look at her eyes to make her see how sorry I am. I think she sees what she wants to see so she softens and attempts to ask me the one thing for which I never answer. So I lift my hand to stop her and tell her I have to leave in a hurried voice.
“Why do you hate to see emotions?” she asks softly to my retreating back. I choose to ignore her and run back to the meeting to which I already know the result. They want Max to be the alpha. Not me. Because I am a girl and a crossbreed. Wolves born to a wolf and another species are considered matuah meaning crossbreeds.
My father was a werewolf and the alpha of the mystic pack. The fortresto- we call it. He found his mate my mother in a war between the werewolves and the coarsions. They are creatures that resemble gargoyles but are also more feathery and soft looking. They emit smoke and fire from their nose. Their colours always match their eyes and that is how we find them out. Their colours are so unique that when you see a coarison your instinct tells you to stay at least a ten feet away from it. All the paranormals can identify a coarison by its distinct smell. But humans and the other normal living things can’t distinguish them from normal beings. Alarm bells ring in their heads and their instinct tells them to get away and run from them.
Coarsions can also shapeshift like other paranormals and they communicate through their eyes. They have no vocal cords and cannot hear sounds. Their main ability is that they can shift into whatever human form they want, the only condition being a connection between the human and the coarsion. Any memory of the human involving the coarsion will also do. Their skin is their sensor. So the only way to destroy a coarsion is to peel its skin off. And for that, there are many other methods. Thinking about all that makes me think about my mother.
I don’t know much about my mother or her birth or even if she is a paranormal or not. We both stayed away from each other most of the time. As a little girl, I never understood why my mother would not talk to me like every other mother would do. My father compensated for it. He made me understand that forgiving is a gift that not all people have. He also told me that after forgiving people, you feel so light as if a weight is removed from your heart. So I forgave her for what she did. She had her reasons and though I don’t know them, she was a great person inside out. I know that she is not a werewolf and so the whole clan hated her. Some of them still do. But that never stopped her from performing her duties as a Luna.
My parents died not long after I shifted for the first time that is on my thirteenth birthday, killed by vampires and coarsions together. Then I understood that not all the creatures are as good as they appear to be. It also made me realize that I can only trust one person to keep myself safe and that one would always be me. That made me stronger and self-reliant.
Undergoing the human, as well as the alpha wolf training, proved to be hard and challenging. The elders used to compare me to Max at each and every step of the training. Though being a boy and two years senior to me gave Max an added advantage, the Alpha blood flowing through me and my determination to be self-reliant turned the tables in my direction. I won the final match and so became the Alpha. Yet I could not convince the elders that I can be their Alpha who will successfully lead the pack towards prosperity. They started the disapproving looks and the critics to each and every decision I made. Every point I spoke was challenged and every decision I made was revolted by the committee members and the elders. Though I received support from Max, Stacy and Harold, the other elders of the committee, they were always outnumbered by the others who want to get rid of me.
Max is Stacy’s son. His father George is my father’s best friend from kindergarten. So Max and I are also best buddies and so are our moms. George, my father James and my mother Lily were killed at the same time when the two couples along with us were on a trip to the other pack, the Moonshine pack. Somehow Stacy escaped along with us and with the help of the Alpha of Moonshine pack got us safely back to our pack house.
All these are those memories I try and keep in my mind-locked at some dark corner. They come out when I want them out. In the war, while I was fighting against other paranormals, I remember the horror on the faces of my enemies and that of my pack mates.
Those emotions and memories fuel my rage and make me a monster that my own people fear. The way I fought and my merciless killing bought them down to their knees. I had gone to only one war so far. But that was enough to convince my pack that I am an alpha and I never take no for an answer.
I know and understand the need and craving of the beast inside me. But I learnt to control it and allow it small access when my point must be made. Slowly people started to see me as an Alpha. But my beast is not enough to convince the elders. They never understood why or how a sixteen-year-old girl could be so brutal in the war, killing ruthlessly with eyes that glowed red. They never understood why those emotions came out of me or why I felt such anger in the first place. So I left them to Max who can make my point and convince them with his charm.
I suddenly find myself at the entrance of the committee meeting hall where I hear a lot of shouts and grunts. So I open the door and rush inside to find Max and an elder Zach shifted and circling each other. Stacy and Harold are shouting at Max and Zach to control their wolves while some of the elders started picking sides as if it were a match. The oldest elder Joseph is trying to stop the fight by ordering others to calm down and barking orders for the guards to control the two wolves.
