Prologue

In the year 2000, something happened.

Not Y2K like many had predicted, but something entirely unexpected.

It was shortly after the new year, A young street magician named David Blaine had been given an opportunity to showcase his talent on the late show with David letterman. He did the classic wooden box sword trick.

Except when his assistant removed the swords, they were covered in his blood. He emerged from the box badly cut up, his wounds slowly healing for all to see on national television.

Naturally all hell broke loose after that spectacle.

The mass hysteria spread quickly worldwide. Those with healing abilities were branded ‘mutants’. Months passed, all discovered mutants lived an existence only comparable to hell. Many were killed, persecuted, and forced into slavery.

Nearly a year later, the mutants struck back. Many non discovered mutants came out of hiding and used their powers to fight their human oppressors. A civil war broke out, which eventually ended in a draw and somehow destroyed the franchise famous Dave’s.

Influential political figures outed themselves, using their powers to overthrow the United Nations. With their power they were able to gather a majority of mutants and create a united front.

Years passed. after many negotiations, (a failed lawsuit for Famous Dave’s) and more negotiations, mutants were finally allowed to live without persecution.

Thousands worldwide fled to the United States, many sacrificing themselves so their children could live a better life.

The United States became a nation divided by mutants and humans.

While it did not erase it in its entirety, racism became a mostly forgotten thing in the past. At least for mutants it was, the amount fear and hatred for their mutual enemy was great enough to overpower feelings about skin color and religion.

By the year 2010 mutants could participate in human society, but they had to wear special collars to dull down their powers. They were forced to live in separate ‘government’ living facilities. The facilities could only be described as rundown shanty towns. Some of the most elite members of society were stripped of their titles and money, and had been reduced to second class citizens.

For months, mutants everywhere struggled to live, being paid minimal wages by hard to acquire jobs. Many resorted to crime, causing humans to look down upon mutants even further.

It wasn’t until exactly one year later that some very old, very influential and massively wealthy mutants decided to anonymously ‘donate’ money and supplies.

These beings bought out several companies to provide jobs for mutants, they formed a council to rally all mutants together and gave them a goal of a utopia where there was no class, race, or religion. Just mutants living their best lives in spite of humans.

This event sparked new negotiations. This time involving very influential figures with deep deep pockets. The most prominent results being the removal of the collars and larger areas for the living compounds.

Five years later, mutants all over the country lived in a state comparable to upper middle class. Larger facilities were their own suburban gated communities, and smaller ones were for colleges, city and rural living. While mutants did pay taxes, negotiations dictated that 75% of those taxes went to maintaining all mutant facilities. Since the facilities were technically government property, only property taxes were to be paid. Mutant owned companies became responsible for upkeep of the compounds. They employed humans of course, Just not in positions of power.

Naturally humans opposed and hated the way things became. They protested and protested, but to no effect.

At the end of the day, they got their wish for ‘separate but equal’ conditions. What they didn’t expect was for mutants to clap back and create their own utopia.

The year is now 2019, and mutants can be identified by their eccentric appearances and air of superiority, But this story has nothing to do with the steadily growing history of mutants in the United States.

We follow a lucky girl who is unluckily in love.
