Prologue: Checkmate
He sat in his office chair and clasped his hands in front of him so I could see them on his lap.
“I don’t think you understand the brevity of the situation.”
“What?” I mused. “The fact that the entire city rests on my shoulders? It came across my mind.
“You cannot beat me, Jax. You just can’t.”
“Let me tell you something about chess: it’s a two person game and each player has the exact same amount of chances to defeat their opponent. But you don’t seem to understand something, Sir. So let me explain it better: I won’t lose. You will lose. It’s a dangerous risk this cat and mouse game we’re playing. But I think I see a way out. Would you like to know what it is? It’s quite simple really: I kill you.”
James chuckled. “You will do nothing of the sort.”
“Just watch me.” And then I turned on my right heel and walked straight out of his office.
