This is Dubstep
Sajima enters the Classroom. The second Year of High school is about to begin and he still isn’t certain where he wants to graduate to. Still tired from calling his friend for 4 hours and getting 3 hours of Sleep, he sits down to his Table. The Teacher would come any second now. Sajima looks over to his friend who seemed quite well rested considering the time they talked. A young and good-looking woman enters the classroom
“good morning, Class. For those who don’t know me or don’t remember my Name for some Reason: I’m Gakuna Kishiwa, your main Teacher this Year.”
“Ugh, does she think she’s funny?” Sajima thinks to himself.
“This year, we have a new Student joining our class. Mihirito, please introduce yourself.” Mrs. Kishiwa proclaimed and freed the desk. A shoulder-long green-haired girl entered the room and walked up to the desk.
“Good Morning. My name is Tokibi Mihirito, I’m 16 Years old and 160cm tall. My favorite Food is Ricepudding and my Favorite color is Neon-green.” Her blue eyes expectantly wander through the classroom. "also, I love Datsik!" "What the hell is a "Datsik"?" Sajima wonders. “Thank you, Mihirito, please sit next to Shire!” The girl bows and makes her way to the empty space next to Natsu Shire, a quiet but unusually smart girl.
“She is kinda cute” Sajima thinks as he stares at the Teacher ranting about exam dates and university courses.
As break was coming, Sajima pulls out his Bento. He was in a hurry earlier this morning so everything in it was kinda rushed. He decides to eat it anyway. As he starts chewing, the new girl sits across from him at his table. ” You’re the guy who looked weirdly at me earlier!” she says, inspecting him with her radiant yellow eyes.
“What? You saw that?”
She giggles. “Nah, I just had the same reaction.”
Just now he notices that her eyes have two different colors.
“What do you mean?”
“You kept staring at me. I guess that made me stare back"
A burning question lingers on his mind, which he hesitantly comes forward to ask.
"Ummm... why are you wearing contact lenses?"
Visibly startled, she answeres "I'm not."
"But..." Sajima begins a new sentence, but is interrupted by the girl once more.
"But I have a yellow and a blue eye?" She finishes his question. "Well, that's because I have heterochromia!"
"hetero... what?" She's not making it easier for him.
"Heterochromia. It's a genetic defect which causes one eye do be either partially or fully discolored from the other"
His eyes linger on hers for a moment, making him break away clumsily.
"What kind of music do you hear?” she asks, as if she knew he'd be awkward about the situation.
He shruggs nonchalantly. “Normal music I guess. Stuff like Super Beaver or Burnout Syndromes”
With a sigh she asks him “Have you ever heard of Dubstep?”
A little confused, he answers “no, never heard of it.” and takes another bite from his rushed bento.
The girl pulls out her phone “look” she says and opens her music library.
“Let’s show you real music.” she states as she presses the play button a little too enthusiastically.
An electronic synthesiser starts playing, quietly. It sounds soft but energetic at the same time. Then he hears the drums kick in, slowly at first but picking up more and more speed. Suddenly the bass he didn’t notice before starts becoming louder. The drums are falling into an obsessive pattern, repeating themselves but growing louder and more pounding as the bass becomes more agressive and almost starts to roar. Then... silence. As the bass comes back, screaming, it jolts Sajima like a thunder. It’s a feeling he never experienced before. A feeling so strong and memorable, it almost hurts him when it was over.
“What was that?” he asks in disbelief.
“this was Dubstep. But if youre asking for the Song: it’s called Lazer Torpedos by Stabby and Megalodon”
He looks at her with hanging jaw. “Dubstep...” he murmurs. The girl stands up.
“I’m Tokibi Mihiroto by the way.”
“Nice to get to know you Mihiroto-san.” He answers. “I’m Sajima Konosawa.”
“The pleasure is all mine, Sajima-kun” She smiles brightly. "Oh, please don't be so formal. You can call me Tokibi-chan”. the girl tells him with a grin and turns around and goes back to her seat.
When school was over, Sajima is joined by Kirugu Hamato, his best friend, on his way home.
“Say, what was the deal with that Mihiroto-san girl? Is she your new girlfriend” Sajima shook his head.
“No. we were just having an interesting conversation about music.”
“Come on, tell me more” Kirugu demands.
“oh come on, don’t stick your nose in every shit you see” Sajima answers annoyed.
“you can’t just tell me what happened? Gosh, you’re such a Goof” his friend replies and turns to the bus stop they just passed.
“I’m gonna take the bus now. Have a nice day, Sajima.”
As Sajima continues walking, he waves, annoyed by his friends overly curiosity.
“Bye Kirugu”. As he arrives home, he looks for the song Tokibi showed him earlier. This thing called “Dubstep” is something completely new. But it ignited an interest in him which he wants to evolve. As he types the words into the search bar, his first result is a direct hit. “Stabby & Megalodon - Lazer Torpedos” uploaded by DubstepGate. He clicked on the video. And really, there it was. The song Mihiroto showed him earlier. It sounds just as good as he remembered! The synthesizer pulls him in and the drums fall into the obsessive pattern he heard before. Then the bass starts rising and growling, so powerfull it makes him wait eagerly and anticipate the drop he knows is coming. The voice announces the part he’s dying to hear again: “Ready Lazer Torpedos, Fire now!”
The next day, he sees Tokibi already sitting at her desk, talking to the usually quite Shire. When he approaches his desk, Hamato slamms his Textbook at the Table.
“alright, Konosawa, you need to help me with homework!”
Sajima sights “let me sit down and get a grip on myself first. Geez.”
“already screwing things up huh?” the girl sitting next to Sajima, Yoruki Sora, answers. She is a very sporty and smart girl, but disliked by most people because of her nerdyness. She looks at Hamato with her slick, crafty eyes and scheming smile.
“Need some help? Why don’t you ask me then?” she says and smirks at Sajima.
“Poor Konosawa doesn’t always need to keep you updated with your stuff!”
“And what are you? His mother? His Girlfriend?” Hamato replies.
“Who knows. Maby I’m his cousin”
" Damn, I’d like to have such a hot cousin” he says.
“did you just try to flirt with me?” Sora asks with big eyes and a smile so happy and mischivious at the same time Konosawa thought she is about to eat his best friend!
“Whoa, calm down you two” Sajima hears a familiar voice say as he looks over to see Tokibis cute face. Wait, did he really just think about Mihiroto-san’s face being cute? He quickly looks to the chalkboard where Mrs. Kishiwa already prepares the lesson. This doesn’t go unnoticed and his seatmate gives him a knowing look.
“Do we have a crush on someone?” Yoruki teases him.
“Oh, you know I don’t!”
“Do I?” she says. Sajima pouts.
“alright Guys, the Teach is here and ready to ruin your day” Mrs. Kishiwa announces herself. “Teach’s a bitch that I will ditch” Hamato loudly announces. “Get a cup and shut the hell up” Mrs. Kishiwa answers unimpressed. The class snaps off.
“Shit, Gakuna’s savage!”
“Why don't you add -chan, Mister Hamato?”
“Sorry Mrs. Kishiwa”
“You're coming to my office after class!” Mrs. Kishiwa announces annoyed. The class calms down again. As class is going on, Sajima catches himself looking at Mihiroto-san from time to time. What the hell is wrong with him, he thinks.
When school is done, Sajima clears his desk and packs his stuff. Tokibi comes up to his desk. She smiles.
“do you want to go home with me?”
“Uh, sure.” Sajima says. Tokibi jumps “yay”. As they are leaving the classroom, Tokibi waves goodbye towards Shire. Sajima smiles.
“They sure get along well” he thinks to himself. As they are walking home, Sajima starts asking Tokibi about Dubstep.
“hey, Mihiroto-san, what do you think of Stabby?”
She giggles.
“I already told you, you can call me Tokibi.”
“sorry Tokibi-chan”
“Well, to answer your question, I think Stabby is a great musician and sound designer, but he’s not my favorite artist.” Sajima already thought there was more, but he still was surprised.
“There are more Musicians that produce Dubstep?”
“Of course” Mihiroto laughs.
“There probably are more Dubstep musicians than in any other genre!”
“So tell me who’s your favourite Producer, Tokibi?” Sajima asks. She looks at him with a determined stare.
“AlexiaMode”.
“That’s... an interesting name” Sajima replies.
“Don’t expect casual names like Bruno Mars or Chris Brown in this Genre.” Mihiroto tells him energetic.
“There’s a Musician called Evilwave! There is one with the name of Teminite! And there is also a Producer who has named himself after Pasta” she says enthusiasticly.
“It’s cute if she blooms like that when talking about Dubstep” Sajima thinks.
“And you really haven’t checked out other artists yet?” She asks.
“I haven’t checked out other songs yet!” Sajima confesses sheepishly. Mihirotos Jaw was hanging down like someone just told her that her car has been stolen or her best friend betrayed her.
“WHAT???” she blurts.
“Sorry, sorry Tokibi” Sajima apologises.
“If you arrive home, the first thing you’ll do is to listen to Stabby some more. Songs of him I can recommend are Black Tide, Rebel and Empire of Swordsmen” Sajima sights.
“Alright, I get it. Will do!” When they arrive at the crossroad that brings them both home, they say goodbye and part ways. Energized by their conversation, he goes home himself. “Mom, Dad, I’m back.” His Father comes to greet him from the Kitchen.
“Welcome back, Sajima.”
“Can I help you with cooking?” He asks. His father smiles.
“Sure. Bring your stuff to your room and then come to the kitchen. We’re having Tempura today”
