| Chapter 1 | Her Past |
For 365 years I have walked this earth. Walked the many roads and paths this world beholds, I've travelled all the continents that I could ever wish to behold. I've watched as empires have risen and fallen and discovered things that humanity has yet to discover. But having this immortality and great power comes with a baggage of misery.
The year was 1654 - the year of my 'transformation'. I had my two adoring parents and my two siblings - my oldest brother and younger sister. And as you can tell from that - I was the middle child; yet I was no less adored than my other siblings - we were all equally adored by my loving parents. As a family we lived in what could be considered in those times as a 'mansion'; meaning that me and my family were easily well off. And as a wealthy family in those times - we were happy. The happiest anyone in our small village was.
But times did change and not for the better.
I was 18 as I watched as my mother lay in her bed; the plague taking her hostage. I didn't get any final goodbye as my father had briskly moved myself and my siblings out of the home - away from our mother. We didn't quite make it that far though because of the mass infection of the plague which had spread like wildfire within our quaint village; my father was next to catch it by collapsing in the middle of the muddy road.
I remember it like it was yesterday - watching my father as he lay on the ground, freshly wet mud now snugly fit around his frame. He looked deathly pale as he stared up at the sky - I remember watching as he failed to pronounce words towards my siblings and myself which made me burst at the seams as I sobbed tears upon tears. My youngest sister besides me also in tears.
Yet we were never allowed to wallow in self pity as my eldest brother dragged both me and my youngest sister away from our infected father who lay in the middle of the muddy road. My brother made sure to take us away from the small village - away from the infection, and away from our dying parents...
The year 1654 wasn't forgiving in any sense of it. Not long after that fatal day - myself and my siblings found ourselves homeless - wondering other small villages for a place that would take us in. But alas no one would.
We had become orphans within the world - no place to call home, no parents to rely on. Yet the worst was to come..
A few months had past and me and my siblings were now dying of starvation. Wondering now a small fishing village which wasn't kind to us - then again - no village was. But luckily there was a small vessel seeking employment for young men who are fit enough to sail; it was a paying job which my brother took immediately - all for the sake of protecting his two youngest sisters. Little did he know though that the very job he signed up for was to fight for his country... He had left, there was little money they had given both me and my sister but we made do.
A small hut on the outskirts of the fishing village we called home. After a while my sister became worried for my brothers non return. She would sit outside the hut waiting for his return.
Again months had went by with not even a word from our dear brother - which led myself to believe that we truly did sell our brothers soul and that he'd never return. My suspicions were confirmed with a knock at the door saying about how our brother died at sea.
My sister found out the devastating news which led her to become depressed. Then it only left me and my youngest sister.
The months went by and we were barely surviving - I had taken up a small job helping at the village bakery. My sister stayed home and maintained the little hut we owned. I'd come home late at night and watch from the wooden door as I entered to see my little sister staring blankly out of the window. I remember one night she spoke as I walked through the very door - that was the first she had spoken in months:
"I miss them Anastasia" she barely whispered as she stood at her spot - staring unblinking out of the hut window which to be fair was only a hole in the wooden wall.
I sighed, "I miss them too Juliet"
I watched still from the door as a tear fell from my little sisters cheeks. She didn't blink though - she stayed in the same position showing no signs of moving anytime soon.
"We're never going to make it." my sister whispered out as she turned to look me in the eye.
My confusion was evident immediately as we were surviving fine on our own. I had a steady job at the bakery which was going fine - there was no major problem prevalent at that very moment. That is until a figure emerged out of the shadows behind my sister - my fear now increasingly risen.
I watched as a tall, slender man with skin so pale and a smirk plastered on his lips. His eyes a bright red colour - if it weren't for those daunting eyes I would have called him the most attractive man I had ever beheld with my own two eyes. But my spine chilled at his smirk and gaze - he was no kind man. And my suspicions were correct when he stood behind my little sister.
Tears now falling more rapidly down her cheeks, my own voice had fallen silent - I had no idea what to do in a scenario like this.
The man then gave a wicked smile which exposed two elongated teeth - like a venomous snake he had wrapped his arms around my little sister, constricting her.
I now had tears falling also as I reached out for my little sister - however - I was too late. The man had sunk his teeth into my little sisters neck and I screamed as I watched my little sisters eyes become lifeless. Her tears had stopped and seemed to start to dry, her skin became paler and her icey blue eyes had dulled. She was dead...
I put my hand over my mouth and muffled out sobs. I now had no one!
I didn't care about the fanged man in the room - I just thought about how my life had spiraled out of control. First the plague taking both my mother and father then war taking my eldest brother then a man killing my youngest sister.
I remember seeing the man approach me with blood dripping from his bloodied mouth - a look of remorse written on his face at my crumpled being. Somehow I was crouching on the floor just drowning in my own tears.
I stared at my dead sister ignoring the man who tried to block my view of her by crouching in front of me.
"I'm going to make this pain go away." was all the man said in a deep alluring voice.
And that's when I felt pure pain sethe through my being. I remember the pain like it happened yesterday - it was the worst pain I'd ever felt in my life. To put it bluntly it felt like all the different torture devices within that time were being used on me all at once. The pain was so bad that I found myself falling unconscious.
