Where I’m From
I am from earrings,
From Dove Soap and La Croix.
I am from “the House”,
Algid, dim lighting,
It sounded resonant and rough.
I am from the hydrangeas, the azaleas,
Bright crimson, cream, or violet.
I’m from the sea and stubbornness
From Tracey and Mimi and Adelaide.
I’m from the flamboyant phrases and abundant intelligence.
From “Sing out!” and “Stay Out!”
I’m from “It’s in the loving we find love,” “Let there be light!”
I’m from “the Southern Peach”,
Old guitars and ancient pianos,
From the pelicans with amaranthine beaks,
The woman holding a cup on her head to be filled once more,
The wall in the hall.
I am from oceans and mountains and great Eiffel Towers,
From music and artists and absent jazz pianists.
I’m from country and butterflies and biscuits from Kroger,
From yelling and screaming and sisters I’m seeking.
I am from Here.
