Chapter 1
Haven’t you ever wondered how far you’d go to run from someone?
~Maila’s POV~
Another long shift.
Another night alone.
After a long day of work, I drive to my apartment complex with the sound of the low radio playing in the background. Damn, my feet hurt so fucking bad.
I park my car, and click the lock button on the little car remote on my keychain. While I walk, I hear my heels click. Click. Click. Click. Tap. I hear another person walk. I look around me and no one’s there.
Oh hell no, I’m getting my ass inside, i’m not about to die today.
I look around once more, then enter the building. I take the elevator and push the button for the 4th floor. The elevator closes and takes me to my floor. I walk to my door and as I unlock it, I hear someone walk towards me. I look but no one’s there. I hurry inside and quickly shut the door.
I sink down to the floor and sigh. I stay there for a few more minutes, then I get up to lock to the door. I walk to the kitchen to make a quick dinner, I grab a bottle of wine while dinner is cooking.
Life is tough being a witness to a drug deal made by a drug lord, you can’t trust anyone.
I go to the bathroom to take a bath. I take my hair out of my bun and look into the mirror. I look at my “blonde” hair and start to see my brown roots. I have to dye my hair blonde again. My natural hair color is starting to come in. My bright brown eyes are starting to dull.
Flashbacks reoccur.
I shake my head to try and get rid of them. I take off my clothes and start the water, I add in some soap to make it bubbly. I get in once the tub is full, and I just relax and let the memories flood through.
*Flashback*
“Hey Maila. How’s it been? I smile, it’s AJ, my partner and bestfriend. “What’s the next case?” I ask curiously. Lately a lot of things have been happening.
More crime. More crazy shit going through the streets of Miami. More drugs.
“It’s another drug ring, we have to get Xander King. I don’t know if we should take this one.” He says worryingly.
Xander King is one of the most wanted criminals in the U.S. We still take the case. We found a lead, and we go to one of his beach houses up in Palm Beach. Once we get close enough to the house without getting notice by his security, we park and get out quietly.
We sneak around back to the pool and we see Xander there. Aj jumps up and runs to Xander and tries to handcuff him. But there’s one thing AJ didn’t notice. The gun on the table right beside Xander.
Xander hears someone run up behind him and jumps up with the gun in his hand and shoots AJ. I scream out his name and run to AJ. Xander sees me and grabs the gun again and raises it. At this point, i’m crying holding AJ’s head up. Xander realizes there’s no point shooting another fed that’ll eventually be found and pinned against him.
He runs to the nearest SUV with his bodyguards and escapes. I call backup and I wait for them to come.
*Flashback ends*
I get out of the tub and wrap the towel around me and drain the water. I throw my hair up into and bun and get dressed. I grab something to take dinner out of the oven, and set it on the stove.
I go search for my phone which is in my purse. It’s by the door. While passing the door, I double check the locks. Ever since AJ got shot down by Xander, it feels like someone is watching my every move.
No one’s ever seen Xander before, well, except me.
I set the table, grab some food. As i’m about to sit down, someone knocks on the door. I wait a few seconds until I hear another knock. I carefully go to the door.
I look through the little peep hole in my door. There’s only black, as if someone is covering it.
I unlock the door but leave the chain locked. I open the door, a bullet shoots through the door, almost hitting me. It’s one of Xanders hit men. I grab the bag I have in case things like this happens.
It contains my passport, my birth certificate, money, a gun, and a burner phone with some helpful contacts. I grab some shoes and open the window and onto the balcony which has stairs that leads to an alley.
Shit, I forgot my keys!
I bust the window and hotwire the car.
