The Crying Mother
Since it was written, the Book of Revelations has caused people to anticipate the end of days as if it were only around the corner. When the multitudes of people believe that at any moment Jesus will descend from the heavens, they have all the less reason to worry about the ramifications of their earthly actions. They seem to have forgotten about being a good steward, and have used the Earth for all she is worth. To an outside eye, it would seem they are trying to bring about the Apocalypse on their own time. In their continued abuse of the Mother in hopes of bringing back the Father, the Mother has become agitated and violent...
With every passing year, nature has become more unpredictable and catastrophes abound. After a series of earthquakes which swept through populated areas located on the North American plate, it was reported on the 15th of December that a new volcano had a appeared in central Iceland. On an island which volcanic activity is the status quo this would not usually be newsworthy, if not for the fact that this new volcano was now the largest mountain on Earth. The entirety of the island’s geography had been changed by its sudden and violent appearence. The accompanying earthquakes leveled entire towns, and Reykjavik was not without damage or a large influx of doomsaying refugees. From any point on the island this behemoth, this eldritch monument to the tumultuous state of the lone planet which cares for us could be seen. The zenith of which seemed to blasphemously pierce the very heavens. If one were to land on the shore the incline would begin almost immediately. The volcano wasn’t apart of the island as much as the island had submitted to and joined the volcano’s seemingly preternatural slopes.
Some people saw the outre appearance of this gruesome mountain as a harbinger of doom. More so than any cataclysm before it, people flocked to their churches, synagogues, and mosques. While others, who payed no heed to antiquated tomes and edifices, saw this as a natural wonder. Something to be studied and understood. Perhaps, they thought, in the belly of this beast one could find answers. Answers to vague and arcane questions which still leave the scientifically minded baffled. The more hopeful thought that perhaps they could find the reason for these catastrophes, while others were simply drawn to its almost daemonaical grandeur out of sheer curiousity.
