Chapter One: Thorne

A cool Spring day is what Thorne woke up to. He had found himself once again being woken by two small children. With a smile he pulled the children off of him as another younger man came running into his room.

“I am so sorry Thorne, they just keep getting away from us!” He exclaimed.

“No worries, I have to get up anyway.” Thorne replied as he got up from his bed.

Living in the Spring House was always a bundle of wonder. Out of all the Seasons in camp, and that would be the Four Seasons Camp mind you, Spring was always had the youngest faces. But that did not mean that Spring House was the weakest, no in fact they are on par with Summer and Winter Houses.

Four Seasons is a unique camp, looking in many ways to a medieval village, with stone ramparts and towers, but housed those who were not the normal. This camp houses the children of the seasons, each with an elemental magic ability but bound by a universal personality and way of using their magic.

Getting back on track, Thorne ran his fingers through his messy mop of black hair and got dressed in his thick cotton dark blue cargo pants and a red flannel shirt. Walking out of his room he grabbed his spear and left. Walking down the long narrow hallway of the third floor where he stayed he neglected the use of the stairs and jumped out the window, and securing his feet to the staff of the spear much like you would do on a long-board. Letting gravity take him towards the ground he grinned and closed his eyes closed for a second to enjoy the fall before pushing forward the wind in a large focused gust pushing him back forward and upwards. Sticking out his hand his eyes flashed gold and dark cloud formed around the spear and he stood up taller as the wind and cloud took him gently to where he wanted to go.

Today was the first official move in day for all of the children of summer. And of course the few amount of people who stayed at the camp all year help the half year kids move in. it is tradition that the children of Day and Night, the two oddities of the world, stay all year around for neither of them have much sway over any particular season. Along with the night and day kids, the children of spring and fall normally stay all year depending on their respective families and their involvement in the real world where magic is still frowned upon and shunned.

With a hearty laugh Thorne flipped over holding onto the spear with one hand and accelerated a bit as he held out his hand to a young woman. The woman raised her hand to receive the high five and laughed as the hard slap echoed across the small area that they were in. Circling around Thorne stood up and came to a jumping land.

“Hey Rea-ann!!” Thorne said with joy, “How’s it hanging? Good winter?”

“Hiah Thorne. Lookin good as always.” Rea-ann said back with a warm smile “Winter was well, too cold as always but whacha gunna do? “

Thorne laughed and nodded as he walked up to her “Very true. I heard you are finally getting a Co-Leader for Summer House. Any idea who it is?” He asked stuffing his hands in his pockets as one arm was wrapped around the spear, leaning it against his shoulder.

Rea-ann shrugged “My best guess would be August but I haven't seen him yet to see if he is, nor have I heard a name from the Director. Should be interesting. But more importantly, ain't it your birthday tomorrow? “ She asked leaning in as if it meant something important, looking at him with a critical eye.

Thorne shrugged, brushing off the critical eyes. “Yes it is my birthday tomorrow but that shouldn't mean much. I'll be only 20.” He said sighing”...And of course one of the oldest still here”

“Well no shit your still here. Dumbass. No girl, or guy for that matter, and 20 Thorne! 20! You are coming of age! That means a visit from the Council of Lords! Or did you forget that you were basically confined here because of your status and your parent’s deaths?” Rea-ann said snappily, putting her hands on her hips.

Thorne’s eyes flashed angrily and a slight rumble of thunder was heard on the still clear day “Don’t remind me of those events Rea-ann. They are no concern of yours.” He said tightly.

She sighed and smiled softly “They are when they affect my good friend. Thorne, please this year will you at least try and find yourself a nice girl or at least a guy to settle down with? I have August and most others our age already have someone and have left camp. This place is a safe place to practice for most of us, but you are of noble blood. You have it harder than all of us. So please take care of yourself. Come one, help me move in bro.” She said punching him lightly in the arm.

Thorne stuck out his tongue playfully as he rubbed his arm “Ok, ok lets bring in your mountain of shit that you bring every year. Anyway there are some new additions to the Lock’s family that are here for their first summer” He said picking up the bags at Rea-ann’s feet.

“Ohh? More additions to the Lock family? How many this time?” She asked as she grabbed her purse.

“Two four year olds, one boy, one girl. Both water based like the rest of them” Thorne said with a chuckle.

Rea-ann laughed. “See Thorne? A natural dad already. Well, send em my way, they might even like my house better!” She said with a wink.

Throne laughed and shook his head “You'll meet them in time Rea. Don't worry.”

She rolled her eyes “uhuu, I better or else you'll be feeling the heat” She said as the two walked up to the bright, four story house. “Ahhhh, home sweet home. Lets see what havoc has been happening since last summer. “

Thorne shrugged “haven't heard a peep during winter, but of course you just had to leave this winter leaving me all alone with nobody to talk to” He said pouting.

Rea-ann smiled and shrugged as she walked up the grand staircase that was leading to the double doors. Opening them with a flashy grand entrance she yelled “ Goooooood morning Summer!!”

Thorne laughed and followed his friend into the grand house.

“Hello! Good day! I am back bitches! Playtime is over!” She yelled into the mostly empty house. Looking around she frowned “My oh my, you poor children surviving the winter in this cold house! Why, did no one heat this place for you?” She gasped in a fake helpless voice.

“Ohh man, them winter kids got you good. Have fun with all of this ice Rea. Can’t help you with this one. And where do you want all your stuff? It's getting quite heavy” Thorne complained looking over his shoulder mournfully looking at the bags sitting on clouds hovering behind him.

“Urg, I know I know.” She said shaking her head “Oh um if you can just toss em in my room that'll be great. I ll get to em later.” She said as an afterthought.

With a blank expression and a flick of the wrist Thorne sent the bags up the grand central staircase and into Rea-anns room. “In that case, goodbye. I am going to go eat breakfast before I starve” He said and turned around.

“You better be back with dem kids mister!” Rea-ann said as Thorne winced as he rushed out the door.

Jumping back onto his spear he reformed a cloud and took off towards the Barn.Jumping off he casually walked into the elegantly large structure and towards the overly green corner of the room. Within the Barn there were six well divided sections each in a constant state of their respective seasons. Spring, Winter, Fall, Summer, Day, and Night. Each section not only reflected how each house looked but accented each House’s stereotype and powers.

Heading over to the Spring section Thorne smiled at the large tree that was just budding and its canopy extended over the entire section. There were lights strung up through the branches and hanging down letting a soft glow come out from under the leafy tree. The floor was lush grass that felt like a pillow. Flowers adorned the border of the section. There were multiple classic plaid picnic blankets placed in random spots around the tree. Along the wall there were vines that were interlaced with flowers. The Spring kids were talking and eating happily all in their own groups. Some in the tree and others on the blankets.

Winter was a constant ice and snow that covered the floor and walls. There were igloos and ice houses and a constant snowing scene. There was a few snow hills with the few remaining kids sledding.

Fall looked just like the Fall House, with falling leaves from the rafters with three small trees and leaf piles all over the leafy floor. It looked cozy as there were pumpkins and other such Fall icons scattered around the floor. A small fireplace sat against the wall and on the other wall there was a projector and a movie playing as some kids laughed at he animated film.

Summer what summer was, a warm breeze blew through the beach setting with tall sand dunes and a grassy meadow. There was a mas amount of blond kids with their feet in the water and a few starting their sand castle building competition for the start of camp.

In the back corners there was a dark space, like the cover of night time. There was a few soft lights floating like stars and clouds covered the roof above them where you could barely see one person sitting alone . The rest of the corner was sheltered by a wall of hedges and vines so no one could get in or see through. You could see only a few lights hanging low through the hedge.

The other side was the complete opposite. Everything was bright and shining. There were tables set up with a very structured cafeteria look besides the brightness that surrounded the place. Everything was covered in gems and jewels that all shown with light or reflected it. There were a few younger girls in long dresses sitting together talking softly to each other, ignoring the rest of the kids in the room. Satisfied that everything was up to par Thorne nodded and headed over to his spot in the tree.

Leaning back in the crook of a branch he leaned back and picked of an apple, waiting for the cooks to bring the buffet style food to each section. Keeping an eye on the night section he shifted just enough so he could see the one person who was up and at breakfast. The thing he loved about the Barn, was that it was a great place to hang out any time of the day or night.

Hopping down at the sound at a bell Thorne grabbed a plate and loaded his plate with fluffy pancakes and maple syrup. He headed back to his spot in the tree and dug in. Catching a bit of movement from across the room Thorne smiled and set his plate to the side and hooked his legs around the branch and let gravity take him upside down, his face landing in front of a smaller man in a sharp black suit.

“Good morning Mr Blake Shyfir” Thorne said with a kind smile.

The pale man scowled a bit as he raised an eyebrow “Good day Thorne. Did you need something?” He asked softly.

Thorne just continued to smile as he shook his head “Nothing in particular just wanted to see how you were doing. I haven't seen you for a while.”

“I am doing well Torne. If you don’t need anything else I am going to go.” Blake said as he side stepped and walked around the upside-down Thorne.

With a pout Thorne swung down and quickly caught up with the pale man. In the better light Thorne could see that he wore well fitting black jeans and a black suit coat. Smiling he matched Blake’s stride.

“What are you doing Thorne?” Blake asked, not looking at the other man. Thorne giggled a bit at a joke he made in his head.

“Huh? Oh, why I am walking next to you! Anywho, I wanted to ask if you were doing anything tonight?” Thorne asked

Blake stopped and looked at the taller man “Maybe, depends on what you wanted to do.” Blake responded carefully with narrowed eyes.

“Movie?” Thorne asked hopefully. With a sigh Blake nodded and hung his head.

“Fine. I will find you and let you know when, considering its your last night of freedom” He said with a wink and left Thorne speechless and confused.

“Please tell me that you did not just try and make a move on the most impossible man in camp.” Rea-ann said, startling Thorne out of his daze.

“Ummm, what would you do if I said yes?” He asked her. She shook her head.

“Thorne, we need to discuss your choice in men. Good for you taking my advice, but still. He is your friend and he is a child of the night. Ya gotta be careful man. Ill help ya but from a distance. “ She said crossing her arms over her chest. “Tsk. Well I am going to go eat then you can help me clean up around this place. And we need to go talk to the Director.”

Thorne nodded, his eyes still following the short well dressed man as he made his way to the tree line on his way to his House.
