A change of pace on the standard detective/bodyguard plot
"I thought I knew where everything was going in the first two chapters. At least, I assumed as much, but...this story is different than the others before it. I cannot state too much without giving away plot points but I will say that the main characters are believable. They act like real people. The main character has more doubts running through his head then he would want the real to know and that’s good: he’s not Superman or Batman, just a man thinking on his feet. I did think that some scenes were slow and others needed more depth. In addition, the climax was...well...different. Yes, I was expecting bullets, explosions, hostage situations, a friend getting killed in the firefight as the villain goes down in a blaze of glory. Evil’s punished, life can go on for our bodyguard. This doesn’t exactly happen in the way we expect a detective/bodyguard plot to go. Yes, I’ve read/seen too many storylines that go that way...but that’s not occurring here, so for every time you think “that” is going to happen, “this” occurs instead and this happens a lot, so everyone who’s seen all of those romances where the client and the bodyguard become a couple...well you will be surprised.
