A Broken System

Torn up papers, broken pencils,

Rubbed erasers, wasted potential.

Format, format, write, write, write,

Do it wrong, you’ll be up all night.

One missed line that’s out of place,

One wrong word, and you’re a disgrace.

What’s defined as plagiarism

If all that’s to be said is already written?

And what’s the point of speaking your mind

If you’re just getting a grade on how you can rhyme?

Why write papers, why read books,

If when we do it “wrong” we get dirty looks?

Creasing edges, paper cuts,

Late night studies, writing ruts.

Read it, read it, highlight the page

Don’t forget anything or the teacher will rage.

So much for this learning system

That can barely teach, and will not listen.
