Prologue
The End of the Beginning
Close your eyes and listen for a moment. Breathe...
Do you feel that?
No, you’re not imagining it. That feeling of warmth and light engulfing you. Everything that exists and that doesn’t, everything that lives and breathes and the things that don’t all have a Sol. An energy only seen by those who dedicate their lives to learn of it or are gifted with a certain sight.
It’s silly sounding, I know. You always make that face when you’re in disbelief of something.
But believe me when I say that this is important. You should know these things before... Well, we’ll get to that when we get to it. Wouldn’t wanna get ahead of myself.
You’re scared.
I don’t blame you.
Something like this can be overwhelming for the first time. Especially after what you’ve just been through...
I have an idea! How about I tell you a story? Something to calm your nerves and teach you a little bit about what I’m talking about at the same time. Would you like that?
I thought you would!
Hmm... should I tell you the one about the people who have snake scales and live underground? Or maybe the one about the witch, the ranger, and the demon? That was always one of my favourites!
No, you’re right. Those all sound pretty lame.
Oh, I know! How about I tell you a story about two kids, brothers bound not by blood but by destiny. One born under the fervent strength of the sun and the other born under the protection of the moon.
Ah, I see I have your attention now!
Interesting that this story in particular catches your ear...
Now, this story starts with a man and a woman, running away from the place they once called home. The man, a dwarf named Deckard, and the woman, a fae named Xayah, were trying to escape the warzone that had become their country.
Through sheer luck and determination they survived. But during their escape they had stumbled upon a dying woman who was clutching a human child to her chest.
With her last words, she begged the odd couple to save her son and take him far away from the violence that surrounded them. The baby boy was wrapped in soft linens, stained red with the blood of his now passed mother and taken away by Xayah, as Deckard dug a grave for the human.
They would name him Robynn, a fae word meaning “flame” and a testament to the boy’s strong heart. It would take some time, but he would earn that name for himself in those beginning years.
With a newly found responsibility, the family trekked on in search of a home. It was on this Lonesome Road that they had heard of a place that called no man ruler. A harsh environment that would sooner consume you whole then give you a fair chance. Somehow, others settled there and built a community known as Titan.
The family travelled north towards this frozen promised land. All the while guided by the pale light of the second moon, Niffelheim.
It was in that frozen tundra of the north where they would find the second half of their destiny.
You see, this world does not take kindly to Sol or those who would dare use it, for good or bad. And as the family of three pushed through a harsh snowstorm, the whipping lashes of snow dusted wind burning their cheeks, they would see a sudden sun bursting in the distance.
There one moment and gone the next.
They followed the wave of heat that came after the light and low boom, desperate for any kind of warmth.
But they would find only destruction and ash. An exotic rune was burned into the ground, something that the family would become very familiar with in the future. In the center of this odd circle that glowed with a soft light was a wailing baby.
He was the opposite of their other child in every way. Where their first was stalwart and refused to ever shed a tear, this one wailed and sobbed just as any other baby would.
The couple scanned the horizon and stayed for as long as they could. But the storm persisted and forced them to move towards the village that grew closer in the distance.
They would name him Veyne, a dwarven word meaning “guardian”, for he would always be the first to anyone’s defence. Doubly so when his hot-headed brother was involved.
Now... open your eyes.
For the rest of this story, your eyes will be your greatest tool and your greatest detriment. You will see the truth and only the truth, whether or not you believe it is up to you. Know that it is my purpose to teach and to guide the lost, to give those without purpose and direction something to believe in.
Besides all of that, however, the tale of The Seeker and The Khan will require your undivided attention.
Where was I?
Ah, yes. We were just getting started...
