Chapter 1
“-How am I supposed to tell him?” I frantically asked my sister, Karly for help.
She shrugged, giving me an unhelpful frown. “You should tell him how you feel about him.” She said plainly like it was a normal everyday thing. Suddenly her face lit up like a lightbulb just flashed over her head. “You should tell him at the football game this Friday… ooh, and could you imagine your ship name?”
“Shut up!” I commanded her and she reluctantly complied, her cheery face now dropped into a submissive pout.
“You KNOW he’s not gay sis, he’ll hate me, HE’LL HATE ME!” I exclaimed loudly, disregarding the curious glances I got from the passersby. “He’ll look at this gay right here.” I pointed to myself, “and think ‘that guy’s so gay, how could I have ever been friends with him?’” I explained, having a complete mental breakdown in public.
Karly stood up from her chair and gripped hard on my shoulders, her nails digging in deeply in my skin and causing me to yelp in pain.
“You will NOT lose him, copy?” She shook my shoulders while looking at me directly in the eyes, I gulped, forgetting how scary my sister could be sometimes.
“It’s impossible to miss the chance of dating someone like you: you’re smart, handsome, positive, caring… you’re everything a person wants in a boyfriend!” She said and smiled brightly, although it wasn’t one of her sarcastic “IDGAF” smiles, but instead: a genuine one.
I swallowed the bile in my throat and gave her a thumbs up. “Okay, I’ll do it, I’ll tell him at the football game.” I muttered meekly.
‘Oh god, this will be bad’ I thought to myself. I’m so sorry Kyle, but I had to do this, I’m so sorry.
(A bunch of time has passed)
“T-I-G-E-R-S, GO TIGERS!” The cheerleaders shrieked, bursting 90% of everyone’s eardrums with their super-sonic high-pitched voices.
I was just sitting on the bleachers, somewhere I would never have imagined I would be, and for only one purpose only – to cheer Kyle on. I saw that I had 30 minutes left until the team made an entrance m on the field, so I sneakily ran into the locker room.
There, I saw him, my angel, my savior, sprouting wings and… beings shirtless? My mouth practically drilled an ocean at the sight beheld to me. Kyle has no shirt, making his muscles glisten even without moisture. His eyes scanned the inside of his locker, seemingly trying to find something until they turned to me, suddenly his face was lit a bright by his charming smile.
“Hey dude, umm…” he awkwardly paused, “watcha’ doing here?” He asked with clear hesitance and scratched the back of his head.
I fidgeted with my fingers. “Um… I’m here because umm…” I fidgeted even more…
I love you Kyle “Uh… You left your phone at my house yesterday.” I reached into my backpack and fished out his phone. Phew!
“I’m sorry, but could you keep it for now?” He gave me his signature smile again, to which I nodded upon pure impulse. “Thanks, bud, you’re the best!” He toothily grinned. I gave him a convincing facaded smile and hastily walked out of the room, ashamed of my lack of confidence.
I had to tell him, one way or another, but this time, I had to, it was inevitable.
…
The crowd erupted in cheers as our team scored the last touchdown, securing the win for the game. I, myself, was cheering as well, only for Kyle though. I searched through the crowd of squealing fangirls, trying to locate my sister, whom when I finally found her, was mindlessly flirting with one of the athletes. I grabbed ahold of her arm and pulled her away from the bustling crowd.
“Kat, I can't do this, I can’t let him know- “
“Excuse me! I’m trying to flirt with him here!” She seethed, her voice warned me to continue.
“…Never mind.” I cleared my throat and backed away into the crowd of celebrating jocks and screaming freshman girls. Great, just great.
I reached inside my pocket for my phone then my eyes widened of what my fingers fell upon instead: a second, leather cased phone. “Shit! I forgot to return this back to Kyle.” I thought to myself. In a rush, I ran to the now busy parking lot in hopes of finding him.
After around 5 minutes, I finally found him, but the sight that usually warmed my heart broke it. Kyle lay on the hood of his car, laying back and letting his luscious blonde hair fall to the back of his hand, but on top of him, was one of those cheerleaders, straddling and getting her face eaten by Kyle.
Man up! You have to face your fears!
I slowly approached them, trudging while tightly grasping on his phone.
The sound of me clearing my throat made my presence known, Kyle and Ms. Slutty cheerleader snapped towards me, her eyes were full of annoyance and distaste while Kyle’s were full of… Lust?
“Uh…” I tried to speak, but the noises that came out sounded like those of a potato. After regaining my composure, I spoke “um… I wanted to return your phone, you know uh- “
“Kay thanks!” I’d originally expected Kyle’s voice to reply, but instead, it came from the chirpy cheerleader. Her face suddenly contorted into a menacing scowl followed with a lip curl. “You fag.” Her voice was laced with disgust.
“Hey!” Kyle interjected, his voice resonated through the parking lot in a way that could invoke fear even in the most masculine of men. He glared at her with the most hatred filled eyes that I have ever seen. Despite his jaw being clenched, he was still able to speak.
“For your information, Vanessa, this fag- “he cast an apologetic glance at me, “-is my very best friend, so if you don’t like him, I would suggest you get out of my life!” He deadpanned.
Vanessa’s face resembled of pure hurt.
The type of hurt that I’ve been feeling for years.
As quickly as her horrified expression came, it twisted into a grim snarl, scanning both of us before clamping the bridge of her nose.
“Ew! You gays, do your making out and kissing elsewhere, UGH!” She gagged mockingly before storming away.
I stood next to Kyle in shock, his expression matched mine of pure distraught. After an uncomfortable silence, I decided it was my turn to break the thick layer of ice.
“I’m really sorry about Vanessa...” I merely whispered.
Kyle sighed, almost relieving. “It’s fine man, I never really liked her anyway.” He paused as an awkward silence fell upon us.
“Is it true?” He asked, his voice was unusually tight.
“Are you really... gay?” He flinched when the word ‘gay’ escaped his lips. I looked down while rubbing my arm for warmth, I contemplated the decision before ultimately, nodding.
“I’m really sorry Kyle, but it’s just that-”
My apology was interrupted when I felt a set of warm lips on mine.
