Summary

Elysia is a privileged girl living in a privileged world. She attends one of the world's most prestigious schools with her rebellious best friend, Egypt. Sophie, Elysia's successful mother, always makes sure Elysia has whatever her heart desires. They live in an upscale penthouse in an affluent area in East Pittsburgh, an up and coming city with deep racially divided roots. When Sophie dies in a horrible car crash, Elysia's world is wrecked upside down. The abundant life she once lived is now in her past, and she is forced to move back to her mother's hometown with her ailing grandmother and alcoholic father, in one of the city's most depressing neighborhoods. Their world is full of struggle and uncertainty. Much to her surprise, the move is more adventurous than expected. Elysia's senior year at Woodboro High is filled with new experiences. Drugs, sex, lies, and everything in between float to the surface of what used to be a perfect life. By the end of the year, she barely recognizes herself or the people around her. Old friends and new friends, family, strangers....who can Elysia trust? Family secrets destroy the little faith Elysia has left. Will living a privileged life give Elysia an advantage in the real world?

PROLOGUE

THUMP THUMP

“Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.” The old, black pastor whispered as he tossed the dirt down into her mother’s grave. She could hear sniffles and whispering as people slowly walked back to their cars that were lined all the way down the graveyard road. The train’s horn grew louder in the background. She zipped her jacket the rest of the way up; her breath puffed out a cloud of heat in the cool air. The colorful leaves on the small tree behind her blew viciously with the wind. She could feel a deep sadness fall over her.

Who were all these people anyway? It was Elysia’s first time seeing half the people there. And where was her dad? He was never reliable, but she expected him to be there. No, she needed him to be there.

“Lysie, you ready?” Her grandmother sniffled as she held out her wrinkled hand.

Elysia could see her feet moving, but it felt like she was floating. Like she was in a dream and her mother

would wake her at any moment.

THUMP THUMP

The sound of the cold, hard dirt hitting the casket played over and over in her head the whole ride home.
