Gone - Poem
This poem is about my first dog, Chui, being put down. In my English class, we had to write a narrative poem, and I, being the extra mess that I am, decided to write about an extremely depressing topic. I got a fantastic grade on this with a teacher's note saying, "Beautiful work, although next time I would appreciate it if you don't make me cry while grading poems."
I sat in the car,
Tears streaming down my face
Silent
So very silent
I cradled him in my arms
My sweet dog
My sweet Chui
He had to get put down
He was in pain
He had to get put down
My parents offered to let me stay
In the car
All alone
Alone with the silence
Alone with the tears
I went with them anyway
I held my Chui
In my arms
Tears still coming down
The vet led the three of us
Into a small white room
With a cushioned table
And four chairs
The poor vet had to fight with me
I wouldn’t let my Chui go
Finally, after crying had weakened me
They took my baby away
My sweet dog
My sweet Chui
I curled into a teary ball,
Still crying in my chair
Moments felt like hours
Eventually, the vet broke the silence
“He’s gone.”
My heart cracked,
The tears weren’t silent anymore
Nothing mattered anymore
Nothing
Only the fact
That my sweet baby,
My sweet dog,
My sweet Chui
Was gone
