1–Auditions
Where she’s from: Liverpool, England.
Age: 23
Name Pronunciation: Ka-sha (Kasia) uh-dare (Adair) Flet-cher (Fletcher)
A little information about her: She’s had a slight stutter since childhood, has a tiny case of aspergers (which means she has trouble talking to people, or talking in front of huge crowds.) Loves to play piano, and paint. Also loves cats more than dogs.
I was heading to San Diego with my boyfriend for the America’s Got Talent auditions and I was very nervous. I’ve never really done anything like this, like majorly that is. I was going to do stand-up comedy which I fancy a lot, but with me having a slight stutter and aspergers makes things a little difficult to do.
Like when I go through drive throughs I stutter pretty bad because I’m put on the spot and I can’t remember what I want to order. So most of the time I call in the order and get Sam, my boyfriend to pick it up.
Since I moved here to America with him I’ve had to adjust to the different stores here, and the time zone. I met Sam when he was over in Liverpool, England with his school for a trip. He has short light brown hair, honey brown eyes, and middle tan skin. His build was pretty normal American, 5’10 and he was decently buff.
“Are you hungry babe?” he asked looking over to me.
“Uhh y-yeah. Wh-what d-do you w-want ttt-to get?” I asked in reply.
“Does Chick Fil-A sound good?” he questioned.
“Yeah,” I say then looking back out the window reciting my act for tomorrow's audition.
Once we arrived to the hotel I was real exhausted but needed to eat my food, and then shower. As I ate my food I watched some stupid reality show on the TLC since I didn’t know what channel BBC was. The room smelt of the mixture of fast food and fresh linen, and together they smelt oddly great.
“What time do you have to be at auditions tomorrow?” Sam asked sitting next to me.
“I-i-i-I thi-nk a-around 8 i-i-is when i-it st-starts,” I say looking to him.
“Well you’ll want to be there early so get there around seven, which has us getting up at six,” he elaborated while adding a simple smile at the end.
I finished up my food and on my way to the loo I threw away my trash. Once I was in the loo I got the water going then took off my clothes, and started to brush out my tangled hair.
When I hopped in the shower the water helped calm my nerves a bit, but I kept over thinking the scenario. I was trying to think about how I was going to do my act.
Once the shower was over I dried off and went and got my night clothes from my bag. Sam went to go shower so I got dressed in the room and watched some more Tv. after about watching a few more stupid reality shows before passing out.
~The Next Day~
I was awoken by the lovely alarm clock going off at six, so I smacked it with my hand and laid back down. “Morning babe,” Sam said in groggy morning voice.
“M-m-morning,” I say back in a whisper. I finally convinced myself to roll out of bed and headed to the loo to shower to help wake me up. As I dried off I could hear the tv playing. Once I was done drying my hair I headed to the room and grabbed my outfit for today while Sam went to go shower.
My outfit consists of a yellow sweater with the sleeves kind of poofy, with plaid overall skirt type thing, and black ankle boots that were velvet texture.
“Oooo babe don’t you look good,” Sam announced walking to me and hugging from the back.
“Aw th-th-thank y-you,” I say smiling. I give him a quick peck on the cheek before I walked back into the loo to brush my teeth and style my hair. I decided to put my hair into a bun and I then put in my hoop earrings, but not the ridiculous ones that you could hoolahoop with though.
“You ready for breakfast?” he asked as he grabbed his coat.
“Y-yeah,” I said smiling.
We decided on getting Waffle House because that was the closest walk to the hotel. When we walked in there was hardly anyone there so we got a booth in the window and talked about the audition.
“Hello my name is Caroline and I’ll be your waitress. Are you ready to order your drinks?” she asked introducing herself. She had shoulder length chestnut brown hair, deep brown eyes, and high cheekbones.
“Y-yes I would li-like a Dr. Pe-pepper, Pl-ple-please,” I say finally.
“And for you sir,” she said looking over to sam.
“I’ll take a sweet tea please,” Sam replied looking up to the lady.
“Alright I’ll be right back with your drinks,” and with that, she walked off behind the counter.
“You want the texas patty melt?” he asked looking to me. I nodded yes so I wouldn’t have to talk to the waitress.
“I’m-I’m going to-to the loo,” I say scooting out the booth. As I walked to the loo I passed our waitress, I nodded and gave her a simple smile as I passed by. She smiled and nodded back, so I picked up the pace and rushed into the loo.
Once I got back to the table my drink was there and our menus were gone. I slid back into my seat waiting on the food. “So ho-how did you sleeep last night?” I asked looking to him.
“Pretty well, other than you stealing all the covers from me,” he joked making me laugh a little.
“W-well I’m sorry,” I say laughing. The waitress brought the food to us and she then left off to tend to her waitress business. As we ate I stopped one fourth of the way because I was getting nauseous and felt like I was going to throw. “Exsc-scuse me.”
I hopped from the seat dashing to the loo running into a stall. I ended up puking all my food and sitting on the floor with my head in my hands. Uhhh I feel so terrible. After sitting there for a bit I splashed cold water on my face and walked out the loo.
“Are you ohkay babe?” Sam asked looking at me concerned.
“Ye-yeah I’m f-fine. Just nervous,” I say reassuring him. I ate small portions of my food but didn’t finish because of how nervous I was.
We had just arrived to the audition place and it was pretty packed. “What’s your name?” a lady asked from the table.
“Kasia Fletcher,” I say smiling. She searched on the list for a few moments and then looked up to me.
“Found it,” she said then handing my number sticker thing. I placed it on my stomach and headed to the waiting area. As Sam and I sat we watched the other people practice performing.
“Is this seat taken?” some guy asked poking me in the shoulder.
“Oh no it isn’t you can sit,” I say smiling. He sat down and crossed his legs. He had short brown hair, a decent face structure, and hazel eyes.
“So what’s your name?” I ask turning to him.
“My name is Levi, and yours?” Levi asked.
“My n-name is uhm Ka-Ka-Kasia, so-sorry if I-I st-st-stutter, it’s a pr-problem I have,” I say explaining myself.
“It’s fine, so what is your act?” he questioned.
“Comedy, what about you?” I replied.
“Singing,” he explained. Wow that’s really interesting, I wish I could sing but my stutter gets in the way.
“That’s c-c-cool. I-I wish I c-c-could sing, but but buuut my st-stutter gettts in the way,” I explain.
As we sat there talking the camera people came up to me and wanted me to tell a little backstory of my life. They said they were going to show it on the tv. So I agreed and did the little clip.
After talking to Levi for a while it was finally my turn and I was going to be the last televised performance. I was standing with Nick as we waited on my turn. “Are you nervous?” Nick asked.
“V-v-very,” I say my voice trembling.
“I believe in you, you’ll do great,” he said patting me on the back.
“Th-th-thank you,” I say smiling. I took in a deep breath and walked out onto the stage. I stopped on the red star, and looked at the judges.
“Hello what’s your name?” Howard asked.
“Oh uhm He-hello, my name is Kasia Fletcher,” I say looking towards him.
“And what is your talent?” he asked.
“I do stand-up comedy, at le-least I think it’s oh-ohkay,” I reply smiling.
“Well the show is yours,” he said, leaning back in his chair. I stood there frozen for a moment reciting my act.
“Ohkay so you know when you watch the Australians do their outback tv shows right mate, and they tell you to be quiet. And then the whisper to the telly (crouches slightly, while looking at the judges and speaks in Australian accent)‘C-c-crickey m-m-mate, you don’t want to awaken the wild kangaroo,’ then they have the audacity to yell (stands back up) ‘Ehh Kangaroo look at me’ (pretends to pick up a stick and throw it at the imaginary kangaroo) and throws a rock or stick at it. Like what do you expect it to do just throw it back mate?” I say and the crowd laughed even the judges.
“Alright when I was younger we had a dog r-r-right? Well of c-c-course everyone did. But when they were chewing on something in th-their m-mu-mouth and you ask ‘ehh Spot, wh-wh-what you chewing on mate?’ and they stop chewing and stare at you. Then you go to get it out of th-their m-mu-mouth they start to run away. So you’re running around like “BL-BL-BLOODY S-S-SPOT WH-WH-WHAT ARE YOU CH-CH-CHEWING ON?!’,” and as I yelled I ran around the outline of the star bent down like I was chasing a dog. Everyone was laughing and cheering before I could finish explaining. “Sh-sh-sh I ha-have more.”
“I feel like m-mu-making other people laugh at-t-t-t-t m-mu-my problems helps th-them fe-fe-feel bu-bu-better about th-th-themsssselves. Because th-their more fu-fu-focused on my life because that’s how society works right? Wo-wo-worry about other people’s problems and pu-point out th-their flaws, so th-therefore yours aren’t the m-mu-main point of the c-c-c-conversation,” I say laughing a little at the end. The people were cheering and laughing. Hidi (hi-dee) and Mel B. were leaned against each other laughing. Howard was laying his head down laughing, and Howie was standing up laughing and cheering with the crowd.
“PUT HER THROUGH, PUT HER THROUGH, PUT HER THROUGH…” the crowd chanted and they began to die off as Howard began to speak.
“So as you can see the crowd is on your side,” he said laughing. “Whoo I haven’t had a good laugh like that in a while.”
“Aw Th-thank y-you,” I say smiling.
“Alright here’s what I see. With you having the disabilities you have, you’re a brave soul. To get up in front of these people, plus the live camera that takes a lot. Mel what do you have to say?” he asked passing the chance to talk down to her.
“I loved your act. You had me dying on the last and I really enjoy your jokes,” she explained.
“We-well you look alive to me, a-and th-thank you, I-I wr-wrote these,” I say laughing a little. She started laughing again.
“See that’s what I mean you can think of anything off the top of your head. Howie what do you have to say?” she asked looking over to Howie.
“I loved the performance. I’d have to say I love the joke about the pet dog. But the last one got me thinking, because as you know most comedians use their jokes to make their self esteems better. You have taken the dark and turned it into a positive and a bright light for all people. Your positivity is amazing and I’d love to see more of you. And in order for that I’m doing something I haven't had the chance to do,” he explained leaning to the middle of the table and hit the button in the middle. Everything turned gold and gold confetti fell from the ceiling.
I couldn’t believe it, I collapsed to the ground crying while the crowd cheered. “As for you people who don’t know, Howie just hit the golden buzzer which means Kasia is going straight to the live shows,” Nick explained helping me up.
“Th-thank you so-so mu-much,” I say through the joyful sobs.
“I want to see you at Live Radio Music Hall, and I’m going to see you Live at Radio Music Hall,” Howie said.
I waved to the crowd and judges as Nick escorted me off stage. “I-I’m s-s-s-sorry if I-I-I tears on your ni-ni-nice suit,” I say laughing a little while apologizing.
“Nah it’s all cool,” he said as we backed out the hug. I headed off to see Sam but he wasn’t there. I saw Levi and we engulfed each other in a hug.
“I’m so proud of you,” he said as we backed out the hug.
“Th-thank you,” I say. “I-I-I fe-fe-feel like I have c-c-c-confetti in my hair and in my heart.” I laughed at I still sobbed.
“There’s none in your hair, but if it's in your heart keep it there,” he said laughing and hugging me once more.
A few moments Sam walked to Levi and I while holding something behind him. When he approached us he revealed he had flowers and a tiny bear stuffed animal. “Congratulations babe,” he said as we engulfed each other into a hug.
