Chapter 1
It was when a man came to the amusement park alone.
The mascot of the amusement park was giving out balloons. The mascot noticed the man and beckoned him. The man approached the mascot thinking he would give one to him. At a drop of a hat the mascot punched the man and the man fell to the ground. When The man got up he was surprised, the mascot was surrounded by children begging for a balloon.
As the man ate popcorn on a bench and was wondering which attraction he would ride next, a shadow suddenly appeared. The same mascot was standing next to him and looking down on him. When the man tried to ask something, the mascot pushed up the man’s hand holding the popcorn container from the bottom. The man fell over with the bench and his popcorn spilt all over his face. When he got up in a hurry, the mascot was surrounded by children begging for a balloon.
It was when the man got on a roller coaster. When the coaster slowly climbed a steep hill and the man clinged to the safety bar, he saw that the mascot was under his eyes. The mascot showed something glittering to the man. It was a screw to fix the safety bar. The man shook the safety bar in anticipation. It was easily removed.
It was a roller coaster that revolved many times. The man desperately clung to the seat so that he wouldn’t be shaken off. While crying out “stop the ride”, the man saw the mascot taking pictures with young girls under his eyes.
The man got his mind together and rode the go cart. It was a course of about one kilometer in length and runs along the perimeter of the park. When the man was driving along smoothly, there was a car that hit him from behind. It was the mascot. He tried to escape, but it was no good. The mascot intentionally rear ended the man.
The mascot pulled up directly on the side of the man’s car. When the man looked sideways, the mascot tilting his head looked very apologetic offered the man a soft ice cream. The gesture had a certain charm.
The man reached out to receive it. Then, the mascot quickly reached over and pressed the soft cream against the man’s face. The man with his eyes closed couldn’t see in front of him. The man missed the curve and crashed into a wall.
In the evening, when the man was about to go home, there was a mascot at the gate. The mascot was doing high fives with each of the children going home. Everyone was smiling. The man’s turn has come. The mascot had been demanding a high five in the same manner. When the man raised his hand to respond, the mascot released an upper cut that emptied the man’s belly.
While crouching the man got up, the gate was already closed. The mascot, the children, the park staff, everyone was gone.
遊園地
男が一人で遊園地に来たときのことだった。
子供たちに風船を配っていた園のマスコットの着ぐるみが、男に気づいて手招きをした。自分にもくれるのかと思って近づくと、男は待ってましたとばかりに殴り倒された。びっくりして起き上がると、着ぐるみは向こうの方で風船をねだる子供たちに囲まれていた。
男がベンチでポップコーンを食べながら次にどのアトラクションに乗ろうか考えていると、ふいに影が差した。先ほどの着ぐるみが、隣に立ってこちらを覗き込んでいた。何か用かと訊こうとすると、着ぐるみはポップコーンの容器を持つ男の手を下からぐいと押し上げた。男はポップコーンを顔面に浴びてベンチもろとも後ろ向きに倒れた。あわてて起き上がると、着ぐるみは向こうの方で風船をねだる子供たちに囲まれていた。
ジェットコースターに乗ったときのことだった。コースターがじわじわと急な坂をのぼり、男が安全バーにしがみついていると、眼下にあの着ぐるみがいるのが目についた。着ぐるみは何かきらりと光るものを男にかざして見せた。安全バーを固定するネジだった。男はまさかと思って安全バーをがたがた揺らしてみた。それは簡単に外れてしまった。
何度もきりもみ回転するジェットコースターだった。男は振り落とされないように必死でシートにしがみついた。泣きながら止めてくれと叫んでいると、眼下に着ぐるみが若い女の子たちと一緒に写真を撮っている姿が目に入った。
気を取り直してゴーカートに乗った。園の外周沿いに走る全長一キロほどのコースだった。快調に飛ばしていると、後ろから煽ってくる車がいた。例の着ぐるみだった。逃げようとしたがダメだった。着ぐるみは男を煽っては後ろからわざと追突してきた。
ふいに着ぐるみが車をぴたりと横につけてきた。横目に見ると、着ぐるみはまるで謝罪の印だとでも言うようにソフトクリームを差し出し、首をかしげて男を見ていた。その姿には園も請け合いの愛嬌があった。
男は受け取ろうとして手を伸ばした。すると、着ぐるみはそれをさっとかわし、身を乗り出してソフトクリームを男の顔に押しつけてきた。目がつぶれて前が見えなくなった。男はカーブを曲がり損ね、壁に激突した。
夕方、そろそろ帰ろうとするとゲートのところにあの着ぐるみがいた。着ぐるみは帰っていく子供たち一人ひとりとハイタッチをしていた。みんな笑顔だった。男の番がきた。着ぐるみは同じようにハイタッチを求めてきた。男が応えようと手を上げると、着ぐるみはがら空きになった男の腹にえぐるようなアッパーを放った。
うずくまった男が起き上がると、すでにゲートは閉まっていた。着ぐるみも子供たちも園のスタッフも、もう誰もいなくなっていた。
