October 4th, 1971
Dear diary,
Today, dad gave me a diary to write all of my feelings in. It was weird, because daddy never gives me gifts. Since mommy passed away, he is quiet and does not talk to me.
My first day of second grade is next week. I can’t wait to see all of my friends!
I love school. I have a lot of friends and I love my teachers! Dad told me that I won’t have friends for long. I don’t know why he said that, but he probably was tired and had another one of those nasty drinks that only grown-ups can have.
I wish I could have cake today for my birthday, but dad said no. I kept asking and he kept saying, “mistakes like you shouldn’t have cake for their birthday,”
It really hurt my feelings, but I think he was just mad at something. I hope he wasn’t mad at me.
Dad used to never be mad at me when mommy was around. Sometimes I feel alone now. He never talks to me anymore. What did I do?
