Prologue
“You are among the top ten percent of our prestigious school,” Principal Matthews spoke.
It was the day every student, parent, and news station had waited for.
It was the Top Tier Battle, which meant the students who were qualified to be the Superhero or Villain of the decade fought to the top.
“Now for those who don’t know how this worked-” some people let out scoffs, chuckles, or rolled their eyes everyone already knew how this worked, they had been looking forward to it for the last decade.
“I know, I know, but I must read this.”
The fifteen competing graduates, sat in the small room, watching from the small TV, as they awaited for their calling.
“I don’t know why we’re even here,” one buff boy, named Gerald said.
Another boy laughed, “We all know who it’s going to,” He said sending a pointed look to Jacob, and Elijah who simply rolled their eyes and continued their casual conversation about whether they would take The Squip if given the chance.
“Well I know for sure I’m not gonna be a hero, villain or a sidekick, so I might as well leave,” The goofy boy named Caden declared making his way to the door.
The guard who stood there glared at him, making Caden cower a little, “Or I’ll just... go sit... over there,” His voice breaking.
“Okay, so as of now I will began calling the students out, and they will state their abilities, and when the last student is out, the battle will begin.”
The room got quiet, as the boys looked around at each other, wondering who would be the villain of our class.
“My bet’s on the fag,” Gerald jabbed a finger at Elijah, who glared at him.
“Ignore him,” Jacob whispered, as Elijah’s face grew red. “No,” He stated, “I was quiet for the last four years in this school, I’m not gonna be quiet now,” He stood walking over to Gerald.
Gerald sat up straight, slightly intimidated by the smaller boy. Elijah stared at him, before he tilted his head, and scoffed, “Gerald,” He said his voice running smooth, and Jacob knew exactly what he was doing.
Elijah leaned in, “Why don’t you tell everyone your little... secret,” He said, and the other boys couldn’t help but watch the exchange, their interests peaked.
Gerald’s forehead begin to glisten with sweat, “I’m gay,” He whispered, and a few gasps flowed around the room, “And I’m in love with Elijah..”
Elijah stood, his name being the first one called, he walked to Jacob giving him a kiss on his cheek.
He didn’t say it, but he was scared that this competition would ruin their relationship, he knew the results could go either way.
“I love you,” He said, and the boy murmured a soft agree hugging him with his chin on the smaller boys head.
“Let’s go,” The guard demanded, to which Elijah huffed, “Just because you haven’t gotten laid in the last two hundred seventy two days-- which by the way is sad that you kept count-- doesn’t mean you have to be a jerk with us.”
The guard became slightly flustered at his words, and stuttered, “I-I have a wife, and w-we do it every night- that’s not true,” Elijah scoffed, “Ronald the closest thing to a wife you have, is your Alexis Texas calendar, and we both know that.”
The room erupted in laughter, as the guard pushed the boy out, slamming the door, and Eli chuckled as he heard the man trying to get the room quiet.
The crowd around the stadium where the event was being held cheered for the boy, as he walked into the view of everyone.
“Now Mr. Jenkins, please come to the mic beside mine, and state your age, and your known abilities.”
Elijah stepped to the mic, and cleared his throat, “I’m eighteen years old, and my known abilities are mind reading, healing others, undead mimicry, and mental manipulation.”
The stadium cheered louder, “My what a lucky young man you are,” She listened to the ear piece before looking back to him, “The judges would like to hear explanations of your powers if you don’t mind.”
He gulped, “O-okay, well mind reading is pretty self explanatory, but it’s basically when someones mind becomes joint with mine so I can hear their thoughts, my healing powers just allow people’s wounds to become mine, which is a blessing, and a curse at times,” he laughed, then continued.
“Undead mimicry is when I am able to conjure, or mimic a late hero’s power for a certain period of time, and mental manipulation is when I can alter people’s thoughts, and I can basically make them do as I say by asking them.”
The crowd was stunned at the ability of the boy, and a few whispers went around, stating he was most definitely gonna be a hero.
“Thank you Mr. Jenkins the judges say you can take a seat, Jacob Greene, you’re next,” Elijah let out a shaky sigh, as his nerves began getting the best of him.
Jacob made his way to the designated area, and told his abilities, “My abilities include telekinesis, psychic shield, and water or fire manipulation.”
“Please explain them,” Principal Matthews asked, Jacob sighed “With telekinesis I can move things without physically touching them depending on the weight, with psychic shield if someone for example Elijah, wanted to read my mind I could block him out, and with my manipulations I can transfer water or fire anywhere, and I can intensify, or detensify fires or tsunamis.”
The crowd once again went into whispers about what they thought his outcome would be.
“Next up Caden Rivers, Caden when you come out please tell us your abilities and explain them.”
The goofy boy ran out pumping his fist in the air at the applause, and almost tripping on his feet.
“My name is Caden Rivers- but I guess you already knew that, and my abilities are... well you know Elsa?”
A few laughs were let out in the stadium, as principal Matthews cocked an eyebrow used to her nephews silly antics.
She sighed, “Yes they are aware of Queen Elsa.”
“Well I basically have her powers, but they’re more badass- I-I mean better,” He then put his hands above him moving them in a circular motion.
The crowd watched in awe, as the once beautiful sunny day turned cloudy as snowflakes fell from the sky.
Jacob, and Elijah watched, never before seeing the boys power in full action.
The crowd looked, as he took the fallen snow, and waved his arms slowly turning it into a cute snowman, that began to blink.
A few awws, went around. The snowman opened his mouth, “Who the fuck are you people,” The raspy voice yelled.
Principal Matthews gasped, “Watch your language,” The snowman wobbled on its knubby legs, “Oh yeah, who’s gonna make my you old bi-”
“That’s enough,” Caden said setting the weather back to normal, as the snowman melted.
Jacob sat wide eyed, then turned to Elijah, “He just kill-”
“I’m aware,” Elijah interrupted also staring with wide eyes.
Principal Matthews had the grinning boy’s ear in a pinch, as she escorted him to a seat, “J-just don’t speak or do... anything Caden.”
He nodded, “Yeah, yeah, I didn’t want to be here anyway,” He muttered, making the principal stalk away calling for the next person, Hunter Rice.
The tall, and slightly lanky boy, stepped on the stage. “My abilities are adjusting the sizes of plants,” He claimed then flicked his pointer finger up, and everyone watched, as the grass grew, and grew.
He stopped it once it hit his shoulder height, then he flicked his finger down, and everyone watched as the grass shrunk back to its regular size, “I can also make plants grow thorns, or become poisonous, but I’m sure you guys wouldn’t want to see that.”
He smiled, a smile showing off his pearly whites, Elijah sat back in his chair, “He’s hot,” He whispered, causing Jacob to glare at him. Elijah smirked, “Not as hot as you though babe,” He kissed Jacob’s cheek, as Hunter sat down beside Caden, and Principal Matthews called the next name.
“All remaining players, stop,” The Principal Matthews spoke over the loud intercom. Jacob, and Elijah stood hidden behind a high amount of grass they assumed Hunter had risen, their chests falling up, and down quickly.
“Step to the front line,” She said, and the two boys stepped off, as they waited for the other two.
“Ah, how ironic,” He began, “The first four out here are the last four standing,” She laughed. The four boys looked at each other.
“Now take your seats, while we discuss you placings.”
Jacob took Elijah’s hand, looking to his eyes trying to read him, but his expression was unreadable. “I’m gonna be your sidekick don’t worry,” Jacob said pulling Elijah into his side.
“Jacob... If one of us is selected to be villain, promise me you’ll let me compulse you, so you’ll forget me, and it won’t make things hard, okay,” He asked his voice barely above a whisper.
They sat in the seats, the two boys behind them having a conversation of their own. “Wha- no Jacob, neither of us will get villain, if anything it’ll be Hunter,” He assured.
Hunter lifted his head, looking around confusedly, “Uh- I heard that dude,” He said.
“Can you not interrupt me, and my significant other, when we’re having a significant conversation, about a significant event in our significant life?”
Hunter cocked an eyebrow, “He just learned what that word meant don’t worry about him,” Elijah waved off.
“Hey,” Jacob yelled, casing Hunter and Elijah to laugh.
“The results are in.”
The crowd around the stadium, and the four boys in the stadium went quiet.
“These results were calculated, based on the boys powers, intelligence, behavior, and with the help of our best mind reader. She has gone, and read through all your thoughts, and helped us determine the places based off of them. These results are 100% true, and cannot, ever be changed. Your Clermont, New City Villain Sidekick is Caden Rivers,” The crowd went crazy, some people laughing, others showing shock on their face.
“Quiet please, hold all noise till the end,” Her voice was stern, “Your Clermont, New City Hero Sidekick is, Hunter Rice,” She spoke.
Elijah’s heart dropped as he let his hand fall from Jacobs, grasping his shirt, as he realized him, and his soul mates fate.
“Your Clermont, New City Villain is Elijah Greene.”
Jacob sat in his seat his breaths shallow, as realization dawned upon him:
He was a superhero, and his significant other was his arch nemesis.
