Alyssa
Alyssa's Point Of View
My alarm rings, I got off from my comfy bed, stole a glance at the other side of the room. All I saw was a snoring figure, her hair is a mess and half of her body is hanging off the bed. This girl, one day she is going to die of excessive sleeping. I sigh, time to get ready and wake that lazy ass. This a normal day for us, her being a pain in the ass until she is fed and me feeding her. She is like a child, that I can’t get rid of and don’t want to.
I did my daily routine and got dressed in some loose blue jeans and a stripped t-shirt. I took a glass, filled it to brim and dumped it on her face. She woke up with a start, gasping for air. Her expression was priceless. We pull pranks on each other all the time. She looked at me with water dripping, and glare in her eyes.
“Ally, run.” She said, that’s all it took. I didn’t wait and ran for my life. She launches out of her bed and runs after me.
“Ally, I am going to kill you” She says still chasing me around the room throwing a pillow at me.
“Eve, you deserved it.” I laugh, still running around. She makes an inhuman sound and tackles me to the ground, I landed on the ground with a thud, with her on top of me. People don’t get the wrong idea; she has the face of an angel but is the real devil.
“Ally, why, why would you pour cold water when I was finally dreaming of my dream guy. I was about to kis-” I cut her off, by pushing her off me, she loses her balance and falls on her butt.
“Haven, your dream guy neither has a face or exists in real life.” I stand up and brush the imaginary dust off me. “I made Chocolate Chip Pancakes, go brush your teeth.” I ruffled her hair. She smiles at me. It’s her favourite.
“Yes, Mom.” She rolls her eyes while smiling.
“Did you just roll your eyes at me, where are your manners, Haven?” I ask, going with it. This is us, we fight, we laugh, we tease each other, but we are always there for each other.
Haven and I go long back, since our diaper days. We have been attached by hips to each other since we met. It was a cliché little story. Her mom and my mom were best-friend, it was natural for us to be best-friends as well. Even though Haven is older than me- only by a month- I have been the sensible of the duo. She is an amazing human being with a big heart, and even if she behaves like a child, she gives the best advice. I on the other hand am a simple person with a logical mind, sometimes cynical, but Haven thinks otherwise.
I sigh and look around our room, we have been living in this Bed and Breakfast for the past two weeks, we just shifted because of our new jobs, we were lucky enough to get a job in the same city. The room is a mess, but hopefully we will move-out form this temporary home in two days.
“Eve, after getting your lazy ass ready please make your bed.” I shout. She is taking a shower. I move towards the kitchen and heat up the pancakes and makes some coffee. I move around the house whilst picking the mess made by mainly Eve. Okay, maybe not everything was done by her, I am as guilty as her in the matter.
I am setting the table when Eve comes out of the hot steaming bathroom. She towels dries her hair and pulls a chair beside me.
“Thank you for the food, Ally. I’ll make breakfast tomorrow.” She says and I scoff. Her and cooking not happening.
“Putting cereal into a bowl and adding milk to it doesn’t count as breakfast.” I comment.
“Huh! Dude, come on give me some credit. And my cereal tastes amazing as I pour it with love and warmth, you cold hearted bitch.” She says. I look at her with humour in my eyes.
“What did you call me?” I ask.
She pours a shitload of chocolate sauce on her pancake and cuts a huge piece “You didn’t make a smiley face on my pancake.” She mumbles, pouting. I always make a smiley on her pancakes. She gets grumpy if I don’t make one, so now she is going to be a little moody all day long. She can be so childish sometimes; she is so cute I can’t help but laugh a little.
I chuckle and promise her to make extra pancake with smiley tomorrow and we continue our breakfast. We have to visit our real dealer today who showed us houses around the city. Today, after two weeks of going about the whole city, and visiting numerous apartments, we finalized three of them. Two of them are located in the suburbs, while the other one is located in the city.
We both got ready for the long day ahead and decided to dress a little comfortable. I look up to the mirror meeting my own cognac eyes. They are the lightest shade of brown, Eve always says that I have amazing eyes, I rather like her dark gray eyes. In the mirror I see a slim figure with straight black hair, pretty eyes, nothing that stands out, but nothing too bad either. Haven has always complimented my looks, she thinks that I beautiful inside out, she is supposed to, after all she is my best friend.
We are hoping to get the apartment we both like as both are quite different but she trusts me with finding our home as I am the one who is majoring in interior designing, so she will agree with whichever area, house and neighbourhood I find suitable for us. The one I like and even Eve like is located in the country side. We walked out of the B&B; Eve as usual is dragging herself because she didn’t get her rightful weekend sleep. She is quite athletic, but when it comes to her weekends, she likes to sleep in.
I on the other hand am opposite, I have a schedule I like to follow and would probably wake up before the chickens could.I like to be jollier, not dark. Not that she is dark.
“Yo, Ally. Do, you think I am a little dark, like an emo?” I chuckle, look at that she can read minds.
“I don’t know. What do you think?” I say, while checking her outfit, she was wearing a black ripped jean, a dark blue oversized T-shirt and her black boots.
She notices me checking her out and looks down at herself. She signs, looks up at the sky and say “Okay, maybe I am, so what?”
“I never said I don’t like it.” I say, we were on our way to see the apartments that we shortlisted. We are going to visit the city first.
“I know, you don’t mind, but-” We are walking towards the subway when an old lady gives Eve a look.“- see, that’s what I am talking about. She is looking at me like I am a guy or a lesbian, the worst they might think I am a murderer.”
“She is old, and don’t worry, you always look like a murder.” I say.
“Ally!” She grunts in frustration, but quickly agrees. “I sometimes do give off the vibes of being a sociopath.”
“Okay, I am sorry, but I am not taking that back.” She nods and we step onto the train and put our butts on the firsts seats we could find.
This went around for a while, her asking stupid questions and me answering them, she is the one who talks and initiates the conversation in our Duo. It’s not that I don’t talk at all, I do talk but just not as much as she does, I take my time to open up to people and once I do, I can talk your ears off and can be quite annoying Eve’s words not mine.
The journey to the city was thirty minutes long, I never thought that thirty minutes can take this long to pass, cause Miss. Grumpy decided to take a nap and I was stuck between her snores and the kid who couldn’t stop screaming.
I mean I love those little lives, but they can make your life hell, with their not so small voice box. I shook Eve awake, how was she able to sleep with all that screaming? She looks at me annoyed and before she could go back to sleep, I grabbed her ears and drag her out.
“Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!” She shouts, with her hands waving all over the place.
“Ally, Ally, Stop!” She uses her strength and pushes me off.
“You deserve it. You left me with a screaming kid.” I angrily say.
“Dude, I couldn’t finish my precious sleep because of certain someone, and I thought you loved those little kids.” She smirks. She hooked our arms together while we climb the stairs and laugh.
“If this certain someone hadn’t woken you up, you would’ve been homeless. But that kid he was so loud, and how were you able to sleep?” I reply her and was curious how could she sleep in such noisy surroundings.
And the answer I got was just a shoulder shrug. Can you believe this little- never mind, I forgot she sometimes behave like an alien. She is behaving like one. No normal person would sleep in such a loud place.
“And no, I am not an alien.” I look at her, shocked.
“Dude, are you like a mind reader?” I ask her.
“No I am not, you are just too easy to read.” She shrugs once again.
We are turn towards the exit and started making our way to the house. It looked like a cosy little place in the pictures. We found the place on the internet and we left a message to the web owner that we would stop by today and check this place out.
“You excited?” I ask Eve. We are just outside the building.
“Yup, you?” I just nod. As we entered the apartment, one look around, we knew this was it.
“No shit.” Eve, looks like she saw her inspiration.
“Yup, no shit.” I probably would be looking like a fool. The apartment we saw was more like a palace compared to this, this is a disaster. The apartment we looked at like that it was renovated a day ago, rather than looking like bulldozer ran over it again and again.
The real apartment looks like it came out of a sewer. The floor is wet, the windows are broken, it smells like someone was murdered here and forgot to take out the body. The fireplace was clogged with stones and bottles, the couch was missing a whole cushion and the kitchen, it had mushrooms growing on the counter. The bathroom, it was worse, the bathtub was filled with gooey like water. Man, we were played like cards by the person who posted the pictures on the website.
“That was a surprise I didn’t except.” I say once, we were out of that apartment, still trying to get over that overwhelming smell and sight. This was a total nightmare for me. I want to kill the person who turned such a good apartment to a disaster.
“Ugh, what was that person even thinking?” I ask.
“It, would’ve been a good apartment once they clean it up a little.” She says.
“A little. No, Eve, a whole lot. That apartment was trash, simple, trash. ” I say, and take my phone out.
“What are you doing?” She asks, even though she probably knows what I am doing.
“I am going to hunt that son of a bitch down and give him a lesson with my fist.” I explain.
“It’s better that I do to fist talking because you don’t even know how to form a fist in the first place.” She says.
“Duh, start warming up.” I look at her completely serious and see that she is amused by all of this.
“What? You thought I was joking; I am dead serious.” I say, dead seriously.
“Dude, calm down, why don’t we first go and buy you an ice-cream, so that you don’t blast.” She says while taking the phone out of my hands and rubbing my back.
“Just because you said we are getting ice-cream. After eating it I am still going to give him an earful.”
“Sure, you will.” She well knows that by the time I finish eating the ice cream I will be more excited about the next house we are visiting.
We enter the hallway, after a short walk, to my left is the kitchen and the right a door towards the first bedroom. I walk straight ahead and am in the dining room, I look forward and see a balcony, a big one. I move towards my right and the living is there in its glory. The second bedroom is a door away from the dining room.
I entered the room, this is going to be my room, she was supposed to get this room but let’s just say she lost her room in a poker game. She wanted this room as it has a bathroom attach to it, while the other bathroom is not attached but separated, it’s located in front of her room away.
We finally found it after going about the city and that god awful apartment in the city, the second we saw this house we forgot about the third we selected and went with this lovely, two bedroom and two-bathroom apartment.
This apartment was located on the fourth floor, we both enjoy the cool breeze and the view of rivers and mountains. This place was perfect for us a little far from our work places but it would be home.
Our parents had agreed to pay for our apartment, it was our graduation gift. Quite expensive but, we did make them proud when we landed a job where we got a pay check of six figures every month. We both are planning on sending them on a vacation fully paid, they deserve it.
“Mrs. Jones, we would like to buy this apartment.” I say to a short, professional women with kind eyes.
“Are you sure, Miss James? You could check out the other apartments nearby, this is not the best one in this neighbourhood. ” She seemed a bit surprised at my forthcoming.
“No, we’ll take it, Mrs. Jones. This might not be perfect in the neighbourhood, but to us it is perfect.” Haven adds.
“As you both say, Miss Wilson. Miss James.” She gives us a curt nod and leaves.
“She is too professional, I’ve told her a million of times to call me Haven, Miss Wilson makes me feel old, like my mom.” She rolls her eyes.
“It’s her job to be professional. And your mom is not that old, quite frankly she looks like your elder sister.” I tease her, she always gets annoyed when someone says that her mother looks like an older version of herself.
She just rolls her eye, and walks towards the airy balcony, I follow her. We both lean towards the edge and look at the mountains far behind, where the town ends. The sun is setting, birds flying to their home after a hard day and now we can fly to ours after a tiring day and find peace. We both look into the colourful horizon, and there isn’t much to say. Just us, starting a new life, a new chapter
When we were young we use to dream and talk about living together and look where we are today, together, starting a journey which might come to an end, but we will also start the new one together.
“Man, I hate packing.” Haven mutters.
She had to ruin it.
