Where there are ghosts

Summary

What happens when hunters fall in love with the very thing they were after in the first place? Meet Ashton Cree. A sixteen year old girl with no friends to share her many stories with. It's no wonder that she's anti social, apathetic and, sometimes, just downright weird when she spends her days tracking and following paranormal entities. When her father mysteriously goes missing, Ashton's mother carts her off to a small town in hopes of her daughter leaving her 'ghost hunting' behind her. Ashton, being the child she was, decided to humour her mother but her and her fathers favourite pass time didn't stray far from her mind... Especially not once she found that her new street, in her new town, was home to a haunted house. *** "I never wanted to be the hero but they wanted a fight and I was going to finish it."

Epigram

As she entered the sitting room, a sudden gush of wind ripped the papers from her hands. Ashton pouted as she knelt to pick up the sheets of papers that littered themselves around her.

She couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched. Gazing up from the mess, she noticed a boy standing nearby. The boy was hard to miss, even harder to forget.

"What are you doing here?"

Even though his voice sounded velvety, his words held a stern warning. His eyes searched to find hers as her hands moved over the papers in front of them.

She took a hard breath as she fell into his ocean eyes, a hint of recognition dragging her in deeper as she looked on dreamily.

"You're the boy who helped me the other day."

Ashton took the leaves of paper and pounded the bundle against the coffee table, settling them and chuckling a little. She had to admit that a part of her was more than a little excited to be seeing this boy again.

The boy remained quiet, tilting his head and raising his brows as though reminding her of the question she had left unanswered.

"Would you believe me if I said that I came looking for you?" she whispered with a shameless smirk.

At that, the boy looks taken aback. His brow buckles and his face softenes as he continues to look at Ashton.

After a moment, his composure is regained and set his jaw.

"You shouldn't be here," he announced firmly.

Ashton bit her lip as she looked down at the last sheet that she had picked up.

"Why not?" she asked, rolling the paper between her fingers.

"Because..." he didn't answer right away. In fact, he seemed to be at a loss for words.

Before she knew it, his gorgeous blue eyes cast her a menacing glance and he began stalking towards her.

Ashton didn't bat an eye. She had already learnt how to deal with boys after befriending Monica, who always had hormonal teenagers drooling after her, and having to brave being the new girl in her high school.

Still, she swallowed and smiled at him placidly, walking backwards in an attempt to escape his nearing person. Although Ashton had managed to reverse into another room, she felt a chill reach her spine when she felt her back hit a wall.

The memory of this boy killing the men who had chased her into this very house, just a week ago, made her breath hitch the slightest bit. She couldn't help fearing him, knowing his capabilities first hand . . .

. . . and being unsure of his state of mind . . .

Ashton set her jaw as the boy advanced, shutting her eyes as he stood in front of her.

Soon, he was sandwiching her against the wall with his hands on either side of her head, leaving her minimal opportunity to escape. With her eyes still closed, she swivelled her head to her left side.

The boy leaned in, his lips grazing her right cheek lightly as he moves a stray strand of Ashton's hair away from her face before whispering something in her ear . . .

Having a boy so close to her was new and she'd just met him so when he smirked at her, Ashton glared at him so hard it looked like she was going to bust a vein.

She couldn't remember being this annoyed in her entire life.
