Psychologically speaking …
"I have mixed feelings about this story. It was definitely written well enough that I pushed past my concerns of the violence to follow the story. 1) Personally, it is more helpful to read a trigger warning at the beginning of a chapter rather than the beginning of a book. 2) Because of my own experiences of various types of abuse there were things that bothered me like when Selene took ownership of making him angry. It has taken me many years to learn that I am not responsible for someone else’s feelings even if I did something that the other person didn’t like, and honestly Selene took on the responsibility of making him angry and having to take the punishment that he believed she deserved; that read more like the author may struggle with that concept themself more than what we actually know about the character Selene. From what we know about Selene and her upbringing she was loved, spoiled, cared for maybe not in the most healthy way as her dad saw her as weak because she was a female but there was no indication that she suffered abuse of any kind at the hands of her caregivers as a child that could have caused her to believe she was responsible for this man’s anger. 3) I guess because I personally experienced various types of abuse and trauma as a child I was then drawn towards abusive men as an adult. I eventually ended up with a man who had the most violent past out of all of my exes but because of his love for me and love for the God who changed his life and heart he changed little by little and our relationship became the healthiest relationship I have ever had. As a result I am drawn to stories that have similarities to our own love story. Maybe I thought this might be similar but the fact that he beat her up so badly means it can’t be anything like our own story. 4) if Selene is supposed to end up staying with him then I would suggest that her back story become more developed with more trauma and abuse that would even cause her to be drawn to a man like that at all let alone stay with a man like that rather than even finding a way to kill herself or trying to escape by throwing her out of her window or something. A woman who came from what her background appears to be like wouldn’t stand for ever giving him a second chance because of her own self respect and although she says she is an alpha female I don’t think she is really acting like one unless she is supposed to be one with trauma. An alpha female would be a fighter, not a runner and would be extremely unlikely to just letting herself be walked into a dungeon for torture. Idk. Asher seems like a classic alpha male with major trauma that coped by becoming the most sick and vile crazy hardass possible but Selene seems like she needs more flushing out to make her character match for what kind of love story this possibly could lead to… unless this isn’t supposed to be a love story then in that case it was an interesting read but idk where else this could go from here. Sorry if my review is too long or to psycho-analytical. This was my first time leaving a review of a book so idk if I got all of my points out very clearly. Good luck. Sara. "
