Epigram
Run. You can't stop now, I told myself, pushing through the pain as I ran into the trees for cover. A deafening gunshot broke the silence.
"Help! Somebody, help me!"
You can't die, not yet. You're so young with so much to live for.
Another gun shot shook the still woods. The sounds of flapping and critters shuffling break the silence that follows. Twigs break, howling erupts and leaves crunch nearby as animals run off into the night to save themselves, just like I was.
"Please! Help me!"
As the blood pounded in my ears and my chest burned with exhaustion, the only thing keeping me on my feet and going forward was the adrenaline pumping through my veins and my will to live.
I was going to be married in a few days, to the love of my life.
"No one can hear you in the woods, sunshine."
The combined cackles of my persuers didn't sound far away at all. I kept expecting to be struck, causing my legs to buckle under me and me being thrown to the ground and killed- but nothing came.
I kept going.
The only reason I wasn't dead yet was because they were toying with me. I was slow, defenseless, hurt and weak and they were right behind me. They watched me fall and get up. They were toying with me. Bleeding badly, I try scurrying deeper into the woods. They could have caught me countless times but they didn't.
They let me move on my own and they followed, enjoying the hunt and trying to force me into the insanity.
Truthfully, I wasn't far.
