Searching
Ice draped itself with an eerie grace over every object in its vicinity. Long and slender, oh so deceptive fingers tipped with diamond talons that tore through the flesh of every horrid and nauseating mortal hung in the poisoned air.
A snarl came from deep within my throat as I scowled and shifted, teeth bared and eyes burning with a dark fire. Mortals. They were fools, each and every last one of them. Yes, there were those that were almost as manipulative and cunning as my kind, but they were nowhere near close.
I sniffed, muttering to myself as I laid out flat against the warm, sun-beaten rock beneath me. The warmth of the overbearing sun beat down on me, sending a pleasurable, only slightly uncomfortable pain through me. I stretched, moaning in content as my spine and bones realigned with a crack.
The fire was roaring around me, hellish tongues of flame that lapped at every morsel in their path with a voracious appetite. Judging by the rate it was moving at, the blaze had started a few hours ago, and with all of the dry wood and fuel in its path, it only grew larger. I knew eventually that it would burn itself out, but it had no intention of doing such a thing at the moment.
I cringed and gasped as a blaze of pain tore through my abdomen, and I hunched over, my breathing having gone ragged as I wrapped my arms around my middle.
Hungry.
I was oh so hungry.
There had been no one in my vicinity during the miles I had traveled, and my insatiable appetite only increased with each step that I took.
I moaned, shivering almost violently.
I needed food.
Meat.
Wet, steaming, lovely meat...
Forcing my breathing under control, I made my body cooperate. Perhaps if I traveled longer down this road—an endless road indeed—I would find something to curb this wretched hunger.
I guess that was what I deserved for having sold my soul all those years ago.
Being forced to consume others was not as bad as anyone normal would think, at least. It could be far worse. I could possess no control whatsoever over my appetite, and I could have become a mindless beast with no morals or emotions.
Sometimes, having emotions was what made it harder.
With a final deep breath, I clenched my hands into fists and continued on, determined on finding something to sate my cravings.
